Class : V Subject : SCIENCE

1. PLANT KINGDOM

4. What is germination?

A. The process of development of a seed into a seedling is called germination.

5. What are the conditions necessary for germination?

A. Sunlight, water and oxygen are essential to carry out germination of a seed.

6. What is reproduction?

A. Reproduction is a process by which living things produce their own kind.

B. Essay Questions :

1. What is pollination?

A. The transfer of pollen grains from anther to the stigma of the flower is called pollination.

When insects come to suck nectar from the flower, pollen grains from the anther stick

to their body. When the same insect sits on another flower, it transfers the pollen

grains to the stigma of that flower, in this way pollination is carried out.

2. What is seed dispersal? Name two agents of dispersal.

A. The process of scattering of seeds is called seed dispersal. Wind and water are the

two agents of seed dispersal.

3. Describe the different parts of a flower.

A. A flower has four main parts :

Class : V Science Page : 2

i) Petals : These are brightly coloured soft parts of the flower which attract the insects.

ii) Sepals : The green leaf like structures present at the base of a flower are called

sepals. They protect the flower at the bud stage.

iii) Carpel : It is the female part which is found generally in the centre of the flower. It

consists of a long tube called style. The uppermost part of the style is called stigma.

the swollen base at the bottom of style is called ovary which contains ovules.

iv) Stamen : It is the male part of the flower which is made up of filament. The swollen

head at the top of filament is called anther which contains pollen grains.

C. The following vegetables have got mixed up. Separate them into summer and

winter crops :

carrot, brinjal, radish, lady’s finger, cabbage, pumpkin, bitter gourd.

Summer Crops Winter Crops

Brinjal Carrot

Lady’s Finger Radish

Pumpkin Cabbage

Bitter gourd

D. Read the following hints within the brackets and tell the difference between :

1. A dry seed and a soaked seed (size, seed coat)

A. The soaked seed has a larger size than a dry seed.

2. A pea seed and a maize grain (seed leaves)

A. A pea seed has two cotyledons whereas a maize seed has one cotyledon.

3. Rabi and Kharif crop (season)

Class : V Science Page : 3

A. Rabi crops are grown in winters i.e. from November to April whereas kharif crops are

grown in summers i.e. from June to October.

4. Rice and wheat (season)

A. Rice grows in summers whereas wheat grows in winters.

5. A Coconut seed and dandelion (dispersal)

A. A coconut is dispersed by water but a dandelion is dispersed by wind.

E. Multiple choice questions :

1. Which of the following is not required for germination? ( 4 )

A) water B) air 3) sunlight 4) pressure 5) both (1) and (2)

2. Which of these is not grown from seeds? ( 1 )

1) Rose 2) Pea 3) Cauliflower 4) Carrot 5) Brinjal

3. Which one of the following does not damage crops? ( 5 )

1) Pests 2) Bacteria 3) Animals 4) Fungi 5) manure

4. One of these fruits is dispersed by water. Which one is it? ( 3 )

1) Apple 2) Peanut 3) Lotus 4) Poppy 5) Balsam
