ACTIVITY TITLE: Essay #11: Substance Abuse Education
REALIZATION, INSIGHT AND LEARNINGS
What is your role or contribution in the fight against substance misuse and abuse?
Student’s Answer:

In a democracy, government policy is inevitably guided by commonly shared

simplifications. This is true because the political dialogue that authorizes and animates

government policy can rarely support ideas that are very complex or entirely novel. There

are too many people with diverse perceptions and interests and too little time and

inclination to create a shared perception of a complex structure. Consequently, influential

policy ideas are typically formulated at a quite general level and borrow heavily from

commonly shared understanding and conventional opinions

Use state prescription databases to identify these prescribers, and distinguish them from

doctors legitimately practicing with populations of pain and cancer patients. Employ TV,

radio, and social media to educate families about drug abuse prevention. This has been

repeatedly shown to reduce the non-medical use of narcotic pain pills. Make problem

drug and alcohol use screening a standard of care. Screening for this abuse should be a

universal practice, used with adult patients seen in primary care settings to identify and

intervene early before addiction sets in and overtakes an individual.

Increase the availability, affordability, and access to drug treatment programs. Educate

doctors, patients, and families about what good addiction treatment must include.

Substance abuse is when a person is heavily addicted or overly dependent on an

addicting substance such as drugs, alcohol, etc. It is a significant issue and should not be

glossed over as it affects the physical state, the mental, emotional, physiological state of

the person addicted, and the people surrounding him. Substance abuse is a preeminent

problem in the Philippines since many people in the country are overly indulgent in

harmful substances. As such, the government is having a hard time lessening people who

abuse substances.

I believe that solving this crisis or problem should be started at the roots, the young

children who are curious and don't honestly know about addicting substances and its'

effects on the human person. I would suggest the government have a program with a

specific purpose of educating the children starting at elementary. It would be good to

educate as early as possible so that the knowledge will be ingrained in the mind of the

children, making them very careful on trying out substances like drugs or alcohol so that

they wouldn't be addicted to it. I believe that knowledge is power. With the proper

knowledge, people would be compelling in their way; that's why giving the knowledge of

substance abuse to children would know that it is not good and will try to avoid it much as

possible.
