DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION

The textbooks in English of the REX, VIBAL, PHOENIX, and SIBS publishing

houses are supplementary to the Grade 7 K-12 Curriculum guide. Based on the guideline

questions given, VIBAL’s Language in Literature (Philippine Literature) 7 stand out in

terms of the presentation of the book itself and the context among the four books

evaluated because it includes the competencies that should be done, and upon browsing

the book we found out that the activities suggested by the book contains the integration

of the five macro skills; listening, reading, writing, speaking, and viewing. While the SIBS’

Grammar Essentials 7 is focused in teaching grammar, the REX, Phoenix, and Vibal were

focused on literature. However, only the Rex’s Essential English 7 (Worktext in Literature

and Language) has the index, but the Phoenix’s Skill Builders for Efficient Reading

includes vocabulary list See figure… after a story. The inclusion of the visual materials

such as photos, diagraphs, and charts were present and integrated to the texts,

particularly VIBAL’s textbook it also play as a cosmetic value since it is colorful, it caught

the attention of the reader and it somehow motivates the learner to read. None of the

textbooks were culturally biased or represent minority groups and women in negative

manner. Only Rex and Vibal have included audio and video material, but the Phoenix

have a QR code in every unit of the book as they call it “ICT enhanced” which the teacher

can scan and use in teaching. The inclusion of these extra material is essential to help

the learners to understand the lesson and have a broader knowledge, thoughts, and ideas

about it. The presence of the tests will help the teachers to assess the progress of their

learners and to use the most suitable teaching methods and strategies to these particular

learners.

RECOMMENDATION

One of the most common resources in the classroom is the textbook. It serves as

a guide for both teachers and learners. Upon evaluating the four major publishers of the

Grade 7 textbook in the Philippines, we concluded that the textbook should be aligned to

the Grade 7 K-12 Curriculum Guide in English. Different publishing houses have different

lenses in viewing what should be taught for these particular learners as well as the focus

of the topic in whole context of the books. The presence of the visual materials as well as

the extra materials as mentioned earlier are essential because it’s another reference for

both teaching and learning. We suggest that having visual materials that is integrated in

the text encourage the learners to read the textbook. The good thing is that all of these

textbooks were locally available.
