Together with the community, we can

do more!
(A Narrative Report on the Advocacy Campaign on School Disaster Preparedness
and Dengue Awareness)

Talugtug National High School has always been a good example for awareness
when it comes to disaster preparedness. The school, together with the students, faculty
and staff, has undergone trainings and simultaneous drills when it comes to disaster risk
reduction management. But we are also aware that with the help of other people,
especially the families and relatives of the students, the local government and the
stakeholders, we can do more.

This is the main reason why TNHS launched a campaign that is very timely and
relevant not just to the TNHS family but to the community that we are in. Last July 30,
2019, the Advocacy Campaign on School Disaster Preparedness took place at the
TNHS Gymnasium at exactly 9:00 o’clock in the morning led by the School Principal,
Berlyn L.Vendivil and the SDRRMC Coordinator, Mr. Jomar B. Doctolero.

The advocacy campaign intends to promote disaster preparedness among the

parents and stakeholders of the school. The students of TNHS has always been aware
of the things that we should do when “The Big One” comes as they always participate in
the drills on disaster preparedness that happens at least four times every school year.
And so, it is just right that together with their parents there will be an assurance that
they will survive in every calamity that might come through the advocacy campaign of
their beloved school.

The campaign began with a solemn prayer led by Ms Reggine D. Avellanoza, a

AP teacher of TNHS, followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem by Ms.
Rea Del Rosario. Afterwards, the School Principal, Berlyn L. Vendivil gave her opening
remarks that focuses on her gratitude about the positive response and active
participation of the parents in the said activity. She also restated the importance of
being prepared in any calamity that will come. According to her, a person who is well-
prepared will have more chance to survive.

There are also six speakers for the event who tackled areas that the advocacy
program is concerned of. The speakers and their topics are as follows: Jomar B.
Doctolero - Overview of the DRRMP; FO3 Aldrin S. Fronda – Fire Safety and Mitigation;
Emerson S. Jose – Disaster Preparedness in case of Earthquake and Typhoon and
Patria N. Balaba – Dengue Awareness. The program also gave time for the Open
Forum so the participants can ask their queries about disaster preparedness and other
related matters.

Fortunately, the advocacy program ended successfully. The participants became

more knowledgeable about disaster preparedness and were able to know that if there is
a calamity that will strike Talugtug National High School, we are all prepared. Once
again, we were able to prove that in TNHS we can do it, but with the community, WE
CAN DO MORE!
