ACTIVITY 1: Underline the grammatical markers used to compare ideas and encircle when it is
used to contrast.

Alligators and Crocodiles


Alligators and crocodiles have many similarities. Both have a long snout and rows of sharp
teeth. Also, they use their long tails to swim through the water as well as, run fast for short
distances. Likewise, they eat a variety of creatures. They eat fish, birds, turtles, and other
animals. Alligators live in warm places in or near the water, same as crocodiles but they are
more likely to be found in saltwater.
On the other hand, crocodiles are shyer than alligators whereas, they are more likely to
hide from people. Different from crocodiles, alligators have a broad snout that is shaped like a U
unlike a crocodile that has narrow snout that is shaped like a V. Alligators are bluish whereas
crocodiles are green or a greenish brown. Both alligators and crocodiles have a very large fourth
tooth. When its jaws are closed, the alligator’s fourth tooth fits inside and is not visible. However,
the crocodile’s fourth tooth protrudes and can be easily seen outside its jaws.
