Explain how nurses can benefit from collaborative professional learning

When people have an opportunity to collaborate, they share their learning practices

and experiences. Collaborative professional learning requires individuals to support one

another in trying new strategies and implementing their learning experiences in their daily

lives(Hardavella, G 2017). Collaborative professional learning is evident in many

organizations, and many people embrace it, aware of its benefits. This paper will look at how

healthcare system nurses collaborate with their patients, the staff workers, families, and other

healthcare to ensure quality care is provided to the patients.

The first benefit of collaborative professional learning within nurses is that it reduces

medical errors. In the healthcare system, communication gaps can lead to many

consequences- from misdiagnoses to wrong medications. Through clinical communication,

multiple doctors collaborate and prescribe medicines to patients, and then the nurses will

deliver those medications, thus resulting in a reduction in medical errors. Collaborative

professional learning improves staff relationships and job satisfaction(Habel, M 2014).

Collaborative learning makes everyone comfortable and encourages every individual to work

with enthusiasm and maintain good relationships with their colleagues. Lastly, collaborative

learning reduces inefficiencies within nurses, especially in their daily duties. It helps the

nurses to arrange their responsibilities and schedules effectively without interference or

colliding with their colleagues.

Discuss barriers that prevent effective communication and collegial collaboration

However, collaborative learning may encounter several barriers that prevent effective

communication. The first barrier is the lack of trust among the employees. Some employees

lack confidence with their colleagues and may not feel comfortable sharing their opinions and

ideas. Lack of trust may lead to miscommunication and misunderstandings, which

undermines an organization's progress (Boyd, J 2016). Secondly, conflicts within the

organization may be a barrier to collegial collaboration. Though conflicts mark a common

aspect of working together, they can also lead to adverse effects on team performance.

Conflicts delay tasks and progress of the team and create inefficiencies in carrying out certain

activities and, as a result, causing poor communication collegiality within an organization.
