Circuits Year
Class : III Semester B.Tech. (I.T) III / II
Faculty Name : M. Sweetline Sonia
Unit : I Lecture No. : 5 Date of lecture:
Topic of Lecture: Superposition theorem-Problem
Introduction :
The superposition theorem states that a circuit with multiple voltage and current sources
is equal to the sum of simplified circuits using just one of the sources
Prerequisite knowledge for Complete learning of Topic:
Requires knowledge in Kirchhoff’s laws, determinants, crammer’s rule.
Problem:
Fig. 5.1
Let us find current through 4 ohms using V source, while I is zero. Then equivalent circuit is
Fig. 5.2
1
Let i1 is the current through 4 ohms, i1 = V / (R1+R2)
Let us find current through 4 ohms using I source, while V is zero. Then equivalent circuit is
Fig. 5.3
Hence total current through 4 ohms is = I1+I2( as both currents are in same direction or
otherwise I1-I2)
Outcome / Application:
To determine the current in a particular branch of a network containing several
voltage source and current sources.
