1. There are many reports that state different dates regarding the discovery of electricity.
However, according to Universe Today, electricity dates back as far as 600 BC with the
Ancient Greeks. The Greeks concluded that by rubbing fur against amber made from
fossilized tree resin, they could create their own form of static electricity. (Integration in
History)
2. Ever wondered how fast does electricity travel? The answer is the speed of light!
It has been proven that electricity travels at the same speed as light, which totals an
astonishing 670,616,629 miles per hour. To break this down further, 670,616,629 miles
per hour equals 300 million meters per second! (Integration in Math)

D. Discussing new concept and practicing new skills #1

Ask:Do you know how to make a simple DC circuit?

After going through how heat and electricity pass through tangible things around us,
let us learn how electricity flows so that our light bulbs light up.

Study the diagram of a simple circuit below.

1. What is the function of the battery? What is the function of the switch?
2. What kind of material should be used to wrap the wire? Why?
3. How should the parts of the circuit be installed to ensure that the bulb will light up?

In order for electricity to be useful in our homes, there needs to be a steady flow of electrons
called current. There also needs to be a complete circuit through which electrical current will pass.

A circuit is a pathway through which electrical current flows. The word “circuit” comes from
the Latin word circuitous which means “go around.” It is made up of a series of electrical
components and conductors. A circuit always needs a power source, such as battery with wires
connected to both the positive (+) and negative (-) ends.

Parts of an electric circuit:

1. Battery – the source of energy or electricity. It changes the electrical energy to light energy.
2. Light bulb – an object that uses electric power or energy. It is referred to as load or output device.
3. Conducting wire – a cable or link that connects the source of energy to the bulb. It is usually made
of copper and insulated with a plastic or rubberized material.
4. Switch – a controlling device which is used to open or close a circuit

A circuit may or may not have a switch. The switch in a circuit opens or closes the flow of
electricity. The electrical circuit is broken when the bulb is switched off.

In a complete circuit, energy starts at a power source (battery), moves through a conductor
(metal wire), passes through a load or output device (light bulb) and returns back to the power
source (battery)

An open circuit is a circuit in which the continuity is broken so that the current does not flow
while a closed circuit is without interruption, providing a continuous path through which current
can flow. Compare the two circuits below.

Remember: For the bulb to light up, you must do the following:

1. Cut an insulated wire into three and strip the ends.

2. Connect the end of the first wire to the negative end of the battery and the other
end with the bulb.
3. Connect the ends of the second wire to the positive end of the battery and the
switch.
4. Connect the switch and the bulb with the third wire.
E. Discussing new concept and practicing new skills #2

We are living in the modern world and almost all households are using electricity. The
appliances we have in our homes such as TV, refrigerator, cell phones and vehicles require electric
circuit
A Short Cicuit is a bad electrical connection that causes the current to flow in the wrong
direction, often having the effect of stopping the power supply
Short circuits can be caused by:
 Pests chewing through wires
 Water or other fluids coming into contact with electrical wiring

 Loose connections in an electrical box
 Old or damaged outlets, switches, lights, appliances, or other electrical devices
 Nails or screws piercing through walls and coming into contact with wires
 Deterioration of electrical cable sheathing

The result of a short circuit can be:

 Appliance damage
 Electrical shock
 Fire

F. Developing Mastery

Activity 2. Let’s Play With My Phet (ICT Integration)

 Before introducing the Phet Simulation on Circuit Construction, discuss that in order
to construct a simple circuit, the main parts should be installed properly.
 Using the simulation, let the learners see how to connect the parts of the circuit to
ensure the flow of electricity.
 Let them identify which is an open and a close circuit..

Activity 3. Can you make a simple circuit now?

Group the class into 4. Set the standards in group activity.
Materials:
 a battery or battery pack with holder
 a bulb with a bulb holder/DC motor
 a single-pole switch
 insulated copper wire (2 ft)

Follow the steps to make a simple circuit:

Step 1. Cut the insulated wire in 3 equal size pieces
Step 2. Strip ½ of insulation off the end of each wire.
Step 3. Attach both ends of the loose wire to the battery holder. Connect one side to the
positive(+) side and the other side to the negative(-) side. Do not insert the battery
yet.
Step 4. Connect the other side of the positive wire to one end of the switch.
Step 5. Connect one side of the third wire that was prepared in step 1 to the other side of the
switch.
Step 6. Connect the other side of the wire just connected in step 5 to one side of the light
bulb base.
Step 7. Using the loose side of the wire connected to the negative side of the battery,
connect the other side of the bulb base.
Group Presentation
Give each group time to present their outputs.

G. Finding practical application of concept and skills in daily living

Ask: As a grade 5 pupil, how can you reduce your electrical bills?

Ways to reduce your electrical bills:

1. Unplug electronic appliances when not using them using them.
2. Swtch to energy saving LED light bulbs.

3. Shut doors and curtains when using the aircon.
4. Repair or replace any appliances that have damaged wiring or power cables.
5. Replace outlets with burn marks, sparks, burning smells, and buzzing sounds.
6. Avoid running power cables underneath carpets and rugs.

H. Making generalization and abstraction about the lesson

For an electrical circuit to be complete, there has to be a b a t t e r y o r e n e r g y

s o u r c e , b u l b o r o u t p u t d e v i c e , and a wire or connector. A switch may or may be
present in a simple circuit. For the bulb to light up, the circuit should be a closed
circuit where the flow of electricity is uninterrupted.
