After going through how heat and electricity pass through tangible things around us,
let us learn how electricity flows so that our light bulbs light up.
1. What is the function of the battery? What is the function of the switch?
2. What kind of material should be used to wrap the wire? Why?
3. How should the parts of the circuit be installed to ensure that the bulb will light up?
In order for electricity to be useful in our homes, there needs to be a steady flow of electrons
called current. There also needs to be a complete circuit through which electrical current will pass.
A circuit is a pathway through which electrical current flows. The word “circuit” comes from
the Latin word circuitous which means “go around.” It is made up of a series of electrical
components and conductors. A circuit always needs a power source, such as battery with wires
connected to both the positive (+) and negative (-) ends.
1. Battery – the source of energy or electricity. It changes the electrical energy to light energy.
2. Light bulb – an object that uses electric power or energy. It is referred to as load or output device.
3. Conducting wire – a cable or link that connects the source of energy to the bulb. It is usually made
of copper and insulated with a plastic or rubberized material.
4. Switch – a controlling device which is used to open or close a circuit

In a complete circuit, energy starts at a power source (battery), moves through a conductor
(metal wire), passes through a load or output device (light bulb) and returns back to the power
source (battery)
An open circuit is a circuit in which the continuity is broken so that the current does not flow
while a closed circuit is without interruption, providing a continuous path through which current
can flow. Compare the two circuits below.

Remember: For the bulb to light up, you must do the following:
We are living in the modern world and almost all households are using electricity. The
appliances we have in our homes such as TV, refrigerator, cell phones and vehicles require electric
circuit
A Short Cicuit is a bad electrical connection that causes the current to flow in the wrong
direction, often having the effect of stopping the power supply
Short circuits can be caused by:
Pests chewing through wires
Water or other fluids coming into contact with electrical wiring
F. Developing Mastery
Ask: As a grade 5 pupil, how can you reduce your electrical bills?

I. Evaluating Learning
Using QUIZIZZ, let the pupils do the assessment.
Direction: Read carefully each sentence and choose the correct answer. Click the letter that
corresponds to your choice.
1. This provides a continuous path through which current can flow without interruption.
A. closed circuit
B. open circuit
C. parallel circuit
D. series circuit
2. What is the energy source of a circuit?
A. battery
B. light bulb
C. switch
D. Wire
3. What happens when the switch is on?
A. Electricity flows in an open circuit.
B. Electricity flows in a closed circuit.
C. Electricity stops flowing.
D. Electricity does not flow in a completecircuit.
4. Look at the diagram on the right. In which circuit does the bulb light up?
A. both
B. Circuit B
C. Circuit A
D. Neither
6. Which is the correct reason why the bulb will not light?
A. The battery is not connected to the bulb.
B. The parts of the circuit are not connected.
C. It is an open circuit since the switch is off.
D. Need to add one more bulb.
8. What could be the explanation why the bulb will light or will not light?
A. It will light because there are two batteries.
B. It will not light because there are two batteries.
C. It will light because the circuit is closed or complete.
D. It will not light because there is only one bulb.
