RATIONALE:
Every child has a right to learn to read – and every child requires literacy skills to open up life
choices and opportunities. Research has shown that children have a greater chance of success in
school and later life if they develop foundational skills such as literacy. Thus, the development of
reading skills is fundamental to academic development and success among learners. As such, the
significance of reading had stood the best of time. Some of the importance of reading include:
Reading influences children’s vocabulary and language development.
Reading is the foundation for future learning.
It improves one’s communication skills.
It develops critical thinking.
Amidst the pandemic, teachers reinforce their teaching reading skills to encourage learners to
read books or other reading materials available online. Online learning is now a common and
accessible way to learn for many students. Teachers can send links to recommended reading
materials. Whether online or offline, the benefits of reading are indispensable.
