Boots

Insulating boots are moulded parts

which are shrunk over the connection
between the cable lug and bushing
to insulate them. They are used in
switchgear and transformers with
compound filled boxes where the
clearances are insufficient for
operation in air or to protect against
flash over due to rodents or extreme
humidity.
A full range of insulating boots are
available up to 17.5 kV. These can be
ordered separately by quoting the
part number or with the termination
by adding a mod code to the end.

Example:
EPKT-17C3MOH3-B07

2. Insulating boot kits are also available for up to 36 kV applications.
For such requirements please refer to your local sales representative.

Support Insulators and Bracket

We also manufacture a range of

hybrid insulators. The sheds of red,
non tracking, flexible polymeric mate-
rial are mounted on a porcelain core.
Sets of three, along with a galvanised
steel T-bracket, can be ordered for
applications up to 36 kV either as
separate kits by quoting the part
number or with the termination by
adding the mod code to the end.

TE Connectivity Raychem Heat-shrinkable Joint Sleeve Rayfit for Medium Voltage Joints

Raychem Rayfit joint sleeve

The outer conductive layer and

insulating middle layer provide the
heat-shrinkable hold-out for the inner
elastomeric layer of the joint sleeve.
During the heat-shrink installation
process, the stored recovery force
of the elastomer is released and
combines with the recovery force of
the heat- shrinkable layers.
As a result, the electrical interfaces
are reduced to the minimum and the
joint sleeve provides a tight electrical
interface.
The elastomeric characteristic of the
materials, combined with the rigid
outer heat-shrinkable (screen) layers
enable the joint to follow the thermally
induced dimensional changes of the
cable insulation.

General Instructions
Use a propane (preferred) or butane gas torch.

Ensure the torch is always used in a well-ventilated environment.

Adjust the torch to obtain a soft blue flame with a yellow tip.

Pencil-like blue flames should be avoided.

Keep the torch aimed in the shrink direction to preheat the material.

Keep the flame moving continuously to avoid scorching the material.

Clean and degrease all parts that will come into contact with adhesive.

If a solvent is used follow the manufacturer’s handling instructions.

Tubing should be cut smoothly with a sharp knife leaving no jagged edges.

Start shrinking the tubing at the position recommended in the instruction.

Ensure that the tubing is shrunk smoothly all around before continuing along the cable.

Tubing should be smooth and wrinkle free with inner components clearly defined.

Cable Preparation
Reference line
Overlap the cables to be jointed by about 200 mm.
Mark the reference line (the middle of the overlap).
Slide one sealing sleeve over one cable end.
Fold and tape it down temporarily.
Position the remaining sealing sleeve over the first one.
Slide the screw clips over the cable ends.

Remove the oversheath and armour according to the dimensions given in table 1.
Clean and degrease the sheath and armour.
Slightly lift the armour wires and set the flexible support ring to the smallest diameter possible over the inner sheath under the
armour wires.
Secure the ends of the armour wires with a wire binder.
Remove the inner sheath according to drawing A.
Cut of the Fillers.
Bend the earth core over the cable.
Shape and position the cores as in drawing A.
Cut the cores at the reference line.

Core Preparation
1 Tape shield Reference line
Place a temporary wire binder around the metal tape shield
Temp. wire binder
at distance d.
Unwind the metal tape shield up to this point and tear it off Core screen Insulation
against the edge of the wire binder. Thoroughly remove the
core screen according to dimension c given in Table 2, so
that the insulation surface is free from all traces of
conductive material.
Clean and degrease the insulation.
Note: Do not nick the insulation! c

2 Screened insulating sleeve (black and red) 2 1

Remove the insulation on all cores according to dimension

l = half the connector length + 5 mm. 4
Joint the conductors by crimping. Remove any sharp edges.
Clean and degrease the connector and the insulation.

Remove one paper from the longer of the void filling strip
(yellow) and roll it up. 5
Wrap it around the conductor with a 50 % overlap stretching
it to about half of its original width.
Fill up the connector area continuing onto the insulation for 5 5
not more than 5 mm.
Note: Do not use too much void filler. The final diameter
should be only slightly greater than the core or connector
diameter, whichever is larger.

Remove the release papers from the short yellow void

filling strip with the pointed end. 6
Wrap it around the end of the core screen starting 20 mm 10 20
from the end of the screen and continuing onto the insulation
for 10 mm. Stretch the strip to half of its original width to
achieve a fine thin edge.
Slide the stress control tubing (black) over the
completed connector area before taping the other cores.

Position all three stress control sleeves (black) centrally over

the connectors. Start shrinking in the centre working towards 7
the ends. The sleeves should be fully shrunk and wrinkle
free.
Note: Continue with the next step while the stress control
sleeves are still hot.

Wrap two layers of copper mesh with a 50 % overlap round

each joint area, continuing for 50 mm onto the metal tape 9
shield. Attach the copper mesh to the metal tape shield on
both sides of the connection area by roll springs supplied in
the kit to maintain shield continuity.
Relay the cores as far as possible.

Straighten the earth cores over the joint area.
10
Slide the insulating tubing over the longer core.
Crimp connector
Cut the cores at the centre. Remove insulation to the
required length and join the earth core by crimping suitable
connector.
File off sharp edges, if any.

Wrap one layer of cloth tape on the joint area under the
crimp connector for securing the copper mesh. 11
Position the insulating tubing centrally over the connector
and shrink it in place.
Allow the core to cool down for some time.

Cloth tape

Wrap the joint case round the joint and secure with cloth tape
as shown in the picture. 12

In the sections over the support rings, clamp the ends of

the joint case onto the steel wire armour by using the screw 13
clips.
Note: For steel wire armoured applications use 2 screw clips
each side.

Cover the sharp edges of the screw clips and the wires of the
joint case with the remaining cloth tape. 14

At each side of the joint, cover the screw clips and all sharp
edges of the joint armour case with one layer of black mastic. 15

Abrade and clean the ends of the oversheath for a length of

about 150 mm. 16
Position the short sealing sleeve over the short cable side so
that it overlaps the end of the oversheath by about 150 mm.
Start shrinking at the oversheath end, working towards the
joint area.

150

Position the second sealing sleeve so that it overlaps the

other end of the oversheath by 150 mm. 17
Start shrinking at the oversheath end, working towards the
connector area.

18
Allow the joint to cool before applying any mechanical strain.

Please dispose of all waste according to

environmental regulations.
