ACTIVITY 2A:
Given: The aircraft in Figure 6 was
weighed in the empty weight condition
and was found to have the following
readings at the three scales:

Nose wheel weight – 20,500 lbs

Right wheel weight – 70,000 lbs

Left wheel weight – 70, 500 lbs

Find the CG location and its expression in %MAC.

WEIGHT ARM MOMENT CG

20,500 120 2,460,000
70,000 600 42,000,000
70, 500 600 42,300,000
161,000 86,760,000 538.88

Solution:

1. MAC = 500 - 690 = 190in

2. Distance of CG from the Leading Edge MAC (LEMAC) = 500 – 538.88 = 38.88 in
3. CG in % MAC

ACTIVITY 2C:
In your own understanding, list 3 reasons why we use ballast in an aircraft.

Based on what I know, aircraft use ballast in aircraft because they use it to balance the
aircraft that is not fully loaded to become stable during flight. Another reason is because when
replacing older equipment with newer lighter equipment one needs to counter the lost weight to
ensure the aircraft would remain usable within its usable limits. Lastly, the reason they use ballasts
on aircrafts, is to attain the desired CG balance.
