MET 4 TYPES OF COMMUNICATIVE STRATEGIES

Lesson # Communicative Competence Strategies in Various Speech Situations

Prerequisite Content-knowledge:

a. Discusses the functions of communication.


b. Identifies the speaker’s purpose(s)
c. Ascertains the verbal and nonverbal cues that each speaker uses to achieve his/her purpose.
Prerequisite Skill:

a. values the functions/ purposes of oral communication.


b. exhibits strategies used by each speaker to convey his/her ideas effectively

Prerequisites Assessment: Quiz

Reflection Questions:

1. What is the purpose of a speaker in communicating with others?


2. Have you tried to convey your ideas to others? What did you do to convey them?
3. How did you make your ideas better to be understood by the listeners?

Pre-lesson Remediation Activity:

1. For Students with Insufficient Level on Prerequisite Content-knowledge and/or Skill(s):


Content review and one drill. (Provide a communicative situation applying the strategies in conveying ideas for communication.

2. For Students with Fairly Sufficient Level on Prerequisite Content-knowledge and/or Skill(s):
Content review and one drill. (Ask them to explain the importance of conveying ideas as speakers.

This part must articulate the following:

1. The learner is expected to finish in learning the lesson in a week – 5 hours. The learner contacts the teacher through email, Facebook messenger, and mobile number when concerns arise.

2. The learner is expected to gain the following thinking skills from learning the lesson:

a. Remembering – the student recalls learned information related to the lesson

b. Understanding – the student demonstrates effective use of communicative strategy in a variety of speech situations

c. Applying – the student engages in a communicative situation using acceptable, polite, and meaningful communicative strategies

3. The student can apply his learning about the types of communicative strategies in the successful completion of the performance check at the end of the lesson and the performance task at the end of
the semester an in various communication activities across various speech situations and to improve communication skills.

4. Overview of the Lesson

The use of Communicative Strategies is the hallmark of communicative competence. Being able to use such strategies make certain not only the achievement of the Speech Purpose
but also the enrichment of the communication experience for both Speaker and Listener. More than making interaction possible, Communicative Strategies when used by the
Speaker (and sometimes the Listener) allow for the adjustment of the Message and its Delivery. Of course, such strategies are employed within specific Speech Contexts using a
combination of Speech Styles and Speech Acts. Communicative Strategies are plans/ways/means of sharing information which are adopted to achieve a particular social,
political, psychological, or linguistic purpose.

Student’s Experiential Learning: (Note: Use the Flexible Learning Activity Identified for the topic/lesson relative to the General Enabling Teaching Strategy)

This section is intended for the presentation guide of the lesson proper. It must highlight the chunking of the topic into essential concepts through the use of formative questions.

Day 3: Type of Communicative Strategy: NOMINATION

Formative question: How do you introduce a topic at the beginning of conversation?

Flexible Learning Strategy: Explain the definition of nomination and collect the learners’ ideas and examples. – scripts for online and offline

Day 4: Type of Communicative Strategy: RESTRICTION

Formative question: How do you control the reponse the listeners by getting the exact answer you wanted?

Flexible Learning Strategy: Explain the definition of restriction and collect the learners’ ideas and examples. – scripts for online and offline

Day 5: Type of Communicative Strategy: TURN-TALKING

Formative question: What are the things you should do when someone is talking?

Flexible Learning Strategy: Explain the definition of turn-talking and collect the learners’ ideas and examples. – scripts for online and offline

Day 6: Type of Communicative Strategy: TOPIC CONTROL

Formative question: What makes a discussion stay in a straight pace without jumping to another topic?

Day 7: Type of Communicative Strategy: TOPIC SHIFTING

Formative question: What are the ways in introducing a topic?

Day 8: Type of Communicative Strategy: REPAIR

Formative question: How do you correct a conversation if there is miscommunication?

Day 9: Type of Communicative Strategy: TERMINATION

Formative question: What are the ways you make when ending a conversation?

Day 10: Annotating Conversation Script for Online (Video Call) and Offline (Distanced Conversation Using Microphone for modulated voice)

Formative question: How do we avoid difficulties in communication with each other by applying the different types of communicative strategy?

Sythesis: The students are able to communicate effectively applying the different types of communicative strategy in various situations. – scripts for online and offline

RUA of a Student’s Learning:

The learner recalls learned information about the effectiveness of the different types of communicative strategies. The learner also demonstrates effective use of communicative strategy in a variety of
speech situations. Particularly, the learner engages in a communicative situation using acceptable, polite, and meaningful communicative strategies

Post-lesson Remediation Activity:

Using the knowledge and skills acquired about the types of communicative strategies in different familiar and real-life situations.
