WHY IM HAIR IMPORTANT7

Hair is the most important part of our look. Our hairstyle says something about our
personality. May it be long, short or medium length, wavy, curly or fly away, we
should always take care of our hair. That is why we go to salons for hairstyling or
treatment. Do you ever have that ‘celebrity feeling’ when you go out of the salon?
Everybody is looking at you because there is something new with how you look, and
you feel good about it. It adds up your confidence. Aside from complementing your
features, it shows that you can take care of yourself because hair care is a hygienic
routine for men and women alike.

The main purpose of shampoo is to wash away the dirt, oil and other cosmetics
present from the surface of the hair fibers and the scalp. Hair should be shampooed
regularly especially when it is easily soiled.

WHAT SHAMPOO TO UME7

Part of the training in every salon is Hair tnnfqsis. Every staff, especially the
hairstylists, should be an expert in checking the hair condition of the client/ patron
and the type of shampoo to use for a particular condition.

HAIR CONDITION SHAMPOO TYPE

Bleached or tinted hair PH-balanced shampoo (Acid-balanced)

Dry and with dandruff hair Medicated shampoo (Anti-dandruf
Fine, limp or fly away hair Thickening or Volumizing Shampoo
Greasy or oily hair Non-moisturising shampoo (plain soap less)
Hydrating or smoothing shampoo (shampoo
Naturally dry hair
with coconut, almond or lanolin)
Normal hair Moisturising shampoo (everyday shampoo)
With cosmetics like hairspray Clarifying shampoo (shampoo with lacquer
and product build-up remover/ deep-cleansing shampoo)

6
HOW TO DO THE SHAMPOO PROCEDURE?

In every hair and scalp treatment, shampooing is the preliminary procedure. You
should not underestimate a good shampoo. It brings you closer to your client/ patron.
If they feel good about the way you do your shampoo, then it gives good first
impression not only for you but also for your salon services. There are 3 phases of
shampooing.

1. The Preparing Phase:

1. Discuss with your client on what services he/ she wants and his/ her expectations.
You may also ask him some questions like the following:

a. How often do you shampoo your hair at home? (It may give you a hint if his
hair is normal or oily, generally, oily hair needs more shampooing than normal
hair.)

b. What hair products are you using at home? (It may help with your after or
other service recommendations)

c. Do you have any scalp/ hair problems or allergies? (It may help you decide
on the right shampoo, conditioner (or not) and massage technique to use.)

2. Set the required material like cape / gown, towel, shampoo, brush or comb, neck
strips, etc.

3. Wash and sanitize your hands.

4. Let the client sit and put on the cape, towel and neck strips around the neck. Adjust
it if necessary, to make your client feel comfortable.

5. Ask the client to remove all hair accessories and jewelry.

6. Check the length of the hair. Analyze the scalp first, then consider the midlength.
Lastly, look at the ends. It will help you determine the type, texture, color,
condition and any other important factors. This will also help with your product
selection.

5. Gently detangle the hair or brush out stiff products.

7
6. Guide your client to the basin and make sure he is seated comfortably at the right
height. The neck should form a seal with the basin. This will prevent water from
running down their back. Place the hair in the basin. If the client is not seated at
the right height, you can miss some part of the nape hair.

7. Turn the water on and adjust the volume and temperature. Check it by your wrist
to make sure the water is not too cold or hot on the client’s scalp.

2. The Cleansing Phase:

1. Wet the hair down entirely. Avoid the water from getting into the client’s face.

2. Pour an ample amount of shampoo into the palm of your hand. Rub it to your
hands and apply it to the hair thoroughly.

3. Massage by starting from the forehead and work your way towards the back in
circular motion. Be gentle and consistent specially in applying pressure to the
scalp. Repeat your pattern twice.

4. Rinse the hair and lift it to remove the first shampoo.

5. Do the process with a second shampoo. (The first shampoo is done to remove all
the products and oils from the hair and scalp. The second shampoo is done to
cleanse and treat the hair and scalp. Rinse the entire hair and scalp even the hard-
to-reach nape area and behind the ears. Check if the entire product is already
rinsed out.

7. Dry up the hair using the towel. Do not rub the towel in your client’s hair and scalp.

8. Assist your client as they sit and check if there is no water dripping doc their
face or neck.

Note: If there are treatinen.ts or other services don.e to the clien.I, the clean.sin.g phase
may Ice done mice or as required lop the treatinen.t/ salon. se mice procedu re.

8
8. The Completing Phase:

1. Comb the hair gently. Start with the hair ends at the nape.

2. Dry hair, then set it to the client’s desired style.

3. Remove the cape/ gown, towel, neck strip.

4. Advise your client on the recommended home hair care products.

5. Clean your workstation. Throw away used materials and put back the unused
top to their proper cabinets.

6. Gather your used towels and cape and put them in their proper places.

Y. Clean and sanitize your brushes/ combs.

8. Clean the shampoo area. Sanitize the seat and the basin.

9. Wash your hands and sanitize often.

Rememl er: Alumgs follow the steps of the three phases (Preparin.g, Cleansing an.d CornpleU rt g Phase) euery after client.

MOWTOENSURECLIENT'SSAFETYANDCOMFORT?

In every activity we do even in work or in life, preparation is vital. Before you talk to
your client and touch his/ her hair, as he/ she enters your workplace, he/ she must
be received courteously and politely into the salon. At this point, reception is
important because it means that he/ she begins his / her business relationship with
you. Every hairdressing business should make their clients as their patron. The
salon’s main business objective is client/ patron satisfaction. Realizing this is the key
of the business’ success.

9
WHAT TO CONMIDER7 wav/now

Clean and good smelling The client will feel more comfortable to see that
body and clothes/uniform his/her hairdresser looks fresh and well-
groomed. Daily washing of the uniform and
deodorant (especially for people who are
sweaty/ perspire a lot.

Effective Communication This will help you to better understand your

client. For verbal communication, spontaneity in
conversation between you and your client is very
important. It builds good business relationship,
and you also build trust if you can connect with
your client. Another thing is, you should also be
able to understand non-verbal communication
like body language. You will often observe that
some clients are not articulate or expressing what
they feel in words, but you can see it in their
actions. Practice to be observant. Maintaining a
regular oral hygiene will give you more
confidence in communicating with your client.
Halitosis (bad breath) is a big no-no in a business
where conversation is important. Brush your
teeth after eating your meals, or if you are in a
hurry, use
breath freshener like mouthwash that will combat
odors of smelly food and smoking.

Goog Posture This will minimize ergonomic hazard. It avoids

injury and fatigue. As you stand for long hours,
make sure that you stand straight, weight evenly
distributed and keep your tools and equipment
near you to refrain from overstretching your
hands.

Health {Sickness} Infections (viral and aerial) can easily spread in

your workplace. Be sure to take vitamins (to boost
your immune system) and if you are sick (consult
a doctor and take medicines as prescribed).

Wearing of proper attire Aside from your prescribed uniform, always

including protective gears wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in
doing any salon procedure/ treatment. It will
protect you from any health safety risks in the
salon. Hairdressers like you use products with
hazardous substance every day. Aside from your
salon apron, you should also wear face masks
and gloves in some procedure or treatments that
you need to use like hair dye, henna products.

Clean and tidy working area This will help you prevent accident and lower the
risk of cross infection. This will also add up to the

1
beauty of your salon’s ambience to promote good
professional image. Be sure to leave your work
area clean.

Clean and sanitized tools, Clients tend to observe what are you going to use
materials and equipment for your services, and it is a must that the things
you are going to use for the services needed are
well prepared. Tools and materials should be
sterilised, and equipment should be checked to
see if there are defects.

In a salon, the impression of your client will make or break you as a hairdresser or
salon stylist, your service and your salon’s name. Aside from the different forms of
advertisement, as you know, word of mouth is great form of endorsement. Your
client/ patron is the life of a salon business. You don’t have to pay the person
spreading good words about your service. At the same time, people will be
encouraged to go to your salon to experience it themselves specially nowadays,
wherein social media plays a big part on information dissemination and broadening
of network linkages. It is very easy for someone to give feedback or comment on
something, and the spread of news is very fast. So, always remember to be we11-
prepared, well-equipped in giving service to your client.
