Lesson New Music
1 (Electronic Music)
Our world has been growing so fast. The rapid growth of technology and inventions
brought forth the development of new music styles. Electronic Music belongs to this
new music styles that evolve by 20th century. Technology has created compact disks
(such as VCD and DVDs), tape recorders, iPod, synthesizers and many more that
enables man to create, explore, process, manipulate and advertise their own music.

1
What is It

Due to so many developments that is happening in our fast-changing world, Music

evolves with it. New trends and styles were created and invented to suite the ears of
the audience. The different machines or I should say the instruments that you have
seen above are a few of the musical development in electronic music. Because of the
development in technology New Music Style arise and one style of which is the
Electronic Music.

➢ Electronic music is music that uses electronic musical instruments and electronic
music technology in its production. It is produced using electronic machines (which
is mostly computer-base) and which can be heard through a loudspeaker. Ipod,
mobile phones, tape recorders, compact disk (VCD, and DVD), amplifiers,
synthesizers and the like are examples of electronic machines that can be use in
creating, processing, producing and recording electronic music.

Musique Concrete (an Electronic Music art form) began in the 1950s. These composers
worked using magnetic tape, reel to reel, to record sounds from the surroundings and
combined with acoustic instruments. Now, electronic music is recorded and sent via
MIDI files (Musical Instrument Digital Interface).
➢ 1919 - Theremin - two metal antennas controlled by position of the player’s
hand and was invented during this year.
➢ 1929 – invention of Hammond Organ - an electric organ
➢ 1930 - Tape Recorder - the tape recorder was invented
➢ 1950 - Musique Concrete - the first piece in this genre was composed

Composer of Electronic Music:

❖ Born Edgard Victor Achille Charles Varèse on

December 22, 1883.
❖ He created the term “organized sound” which can
be heard in his compositions which means that
timbres and rhythms can be grouped and arrange
to create a new sound.
❖ Known as the “Father of Electronic Music”
❖ Debussy was the one that gave the young composer
much inspiration, encouraging Varèse to look at
non-western music for inspiration.

Musical Style:
➢ His music is dissonant, nonthematic (meaning it does not convey any theme
or meaning), and rhythmically asymmetric.
➢ He experimented in form and texture making his music very noisy
Works:
Ionisation (1931) - is best known among his composition and it is written for
percussion instruments plus a siren.
Déserts (1954) - one of his works that utilizes noises and electronically
produced sounds.
Poème électronique (1958) - in this work, there are "no chords, no harmonies,
no imitations of instruments, and no cliches of composition that have been
done a thousand times over." Instead of strings and brass, there are sirens,
human cries, explosions, and electronic squelches.
