lifestyle in the community)

III. RATIONALE

Childhood is a pivotal time for growth and development, with food habits being
defined during this period.  Nutrition for infants, children, and adolescents should
maintain current weight and support normal growth and development. Growth during
infancy is rapid, critical for neurocognitive development, and has the highest energy and
nutrient requirements relative to body size than any other period of growth. Adequate
nutrition during infancy is essential for lifelong health and well-being. Infants should be
exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life up to two years or more to achieve
optimal growth, development and health.

Nutrition and growth during the first three (3) years of life predict adult stature
and some health outcomes. The major risk period for growth stunting (impaired linear
growth) is between four (4) and twenty-four (24) months of age.

Dietary intake should provide energy requirements as well as the essential

macronutrient and micronutrient needs for sustaining the function of multiple vital
processes. Nutrient deficiencies can limit growth, impair immune function, affect
neurodevelopment, and increase morbidity and mortality.

The Municipality of Ajuy ranked number 27 out of 42 Municipalities in the

Province of Iloilo, based on the Operation Timbang Plus result as of 2021. Upon
thorough assessment and validation. The Malnutrition Prevalence rate in the
Municipality of Ajuy was 1.5% in Underweight, 2.9% for stunting, and 0.2% in wasting.

The Municipal Nutrition Committee have devised appropriate interventions on

the attempt to decrease the prevalence rate of the different forms of malnutrition in
our Municipality, such as intensive nutrition education and counselling, and
micronutrient supplementations. Moreover, there is a gradual decrease of
Malnutrition Prevalence Rate for 2022 despite (remove “of”) the Covid-19 Pandemic
based on the recent result of Operation Timbang Plus; this is due to intensive
campaign on exclusive and continuous breastfeeding, the capacity building of
Barangay Nutrition Scholars, and the monthly follow-up of the nutritional status of
malnourished children ages 0-59 months. The strict counselling and implementation of
family planning has also helped in decreasing the birth rate of multiparous mothers
and especially to families at risk for malnutrition and those with large number of
households.

The Municipal Nutrition Committee planned to organized a one (1) day

symposium activity which will help to spread the awareness towards nutrition program
with frontline health workers, parents and lactating mothers of the nutritionally at risk
children. This year’s theme “NEW NORMAL NA NUTRITSYON SAMA-SAMANG GAWAN
NG SOLUSYON”, calls for strengthened nutrition interventions and solidarity towards
nutrition improvement as the country shifts towards living with the COVID-19 virus.
The theme also signifies the key role of nutrition in building resilience from pandemic
to endemic paradigm.

The term “new normal” was adopted to signify a transition to a better normal
while bringing the positive impacts of the pandemic to become more resilient and to
help prevent future pandemics. The Nutrition Month campaign aims to highlight the
importance of nutrition in recovery; stimulate discussions on how to re-establish
better design and delivery of nutrition interventions; and encourage the participation
of various sectors to promote nutrition.

The pandemic has made a huge impact on nutrition, such as disruptions in the
delivery of nutrition and related services, increased hunger incidence, and many more.
But there are also positive impacts such as innovation in service delivery, home food
production, increased awareness of one’s health and consuming healthy diets, and the
solidarity amongst the people to help each other.

Alternative thought:

The pandemic has numerous detrimental impact on nutrition, most notable are
disruptions in the delivery of nutrition and related services, and increased hunger
incidence. However, the positive impacts are of greater importance, such as
innovation in service delivery, home-food production, increased awareness of one’s health,
adherence to healthy diets, and the solidarity among the people to help each other.
(amongst is an old english word and is no longer used in formal language)
