SINGULAR AND PLURAL NOUNS

(Danh từ số ít và Danh từ số nhiều)
1. Phân biệt
• Singular nouns (Danh từ số ít): Là những danh từ đếm được (countable nouns) với số
đếm là MỘT.
eg: a baby, an apple, a ball,….
one baby, this apple, that ball,….
• Plural nouns (Danh từ số nhiều): Là những danh từ đếm được (countable nouns) với số
đếm TỪ HAI TRỞ LÊN. Danh từ số nhiều thường có “s” ở cuối từ.
eg: 2 babies, 3 apples, 4 balls,…
these babies, those apples, many balls,….

2. Quy tắc chuyển từ danh từ số ít sang số nhiều

a. Thêm “s” vào cuối danh từ số ít để chuyển thành danh từ số nhiều.
eg: pen – pens, car – cars, house – houses,….

b. Đối với những danh từ có tận cùng là s, x, z, ch, sh, ss → thêm “es” vào cuối để chuyển thành
danh từ số nhiều.
eg: wach – watches, box – boxes, class – classes,….

c. Đối với những danh từ có tận cùng là f, fe → bỏ f, ef và thêm “ves” vào cuối để chuyển thành
danh từ số nhiều.
eg: bookshelf – bookshelves, leaf – leaves, knife – knives,….
Lưu ý: Trường hợp đặc biệt: roof – roofs, chef – chefs,….

d. Đối với những danh từ có tận cùng là y:

• Nếu y đứng sau 1 nguyên âm → thêm “s” sau y để chuyển thành danh từ số nhiều.
eg: day – days, toy – toys, donkey – donkeys,….

• Nếu y đứng sau 1 phụ âm → bỏ y và thêm “-ies” vào cuối để chuyển thành danh từ số
nhiều.
eg: city – cities, lady – ladies, candy – candies,….

e. Đối với những danh từ có tận cùng là o:

• Nếu o đứng sau 1 nguyên âm → thêm “s” sau o để chuyển thành danh từ số nhiều.
eg: radio – radios, video – videos, stereo – stereos,…..

• Nếu o đứng sau 1 phụ âm → thêm “es” sau o để chuyển thành danh từ số nhiều.
eg: hero – heroes, potato – potatoes, domino – dominoes,….
Lưu ý: Trường hợp đặc biệt: photo – photos, piano – pianos.
