We use adverbs of manner to describe how


we do things.

Usage

Most adverbs of manner add ‘-ly’ at the end of an adjective:


大部分情態副詞由形容詞加上「 -ly 」組成 :

The tortoise is slow. It walks slowly.


Jenny is a cheerful girl. She laughs cheerfully.

If the adjective ends with ‘-y’, replace the ‘-y’ with ‘-ily’ :
如形容詞以「 -y 」作結 , 需用「 -ily 」取代 :

My sister is happy. She is singing happily.


Mum is very angry. She shouts angrily at us.

Some adjectives and adverbs have the same spelling; some adverbs change
completely:
部分形容詞跟副詞一模一樣 ; 部分則完全不同 :

John is a fast runner. He runs fast.


Katy is a good pianist. She plays the piano well.
