Resonance

I. Introduction
An electric circuit has very low impedance at a specific frequency. Resonant circuits are
often built using an inductor, such as a coil, connected in parallel to a capacitor. The circuit's
response to signals of different frequencies is a function of the inductance and capacitance of the
circuit and peaks at one frequency value, at which the current flow resonates most strongly with
the input signal. Resonant circuits are used in radio and television tuners to pick out broadcast
signals of specific frequencies.

IV. Answer to Question and Solution to Problems

1. From the graph of Figure 7.8, what can you say about the current at the
resonant frequency?

-The current increases when the frequency increases but when it goes
to 1100 Hz to 1500 Hz the current decreases.

2. From the graph of Figure 7.9, what can you say about the current at the
resonant frequency?
-From the graph of figure 7.9 the current increases when the
frequency increases.
3. A coil of 30 ohm resistance and 106 mH inductance is connected in series
with a variable capacitor to a 200 V, 60 cycle source. Find the capacitance
of the capacitor that would place the circuit at resonance. Also find the total
current and power under this condition.
Solution:
XL = Xc
XL = 2𝜋fL
XL = 2𝜋(60) (106 mH)
XL = XC = 39.96 Ω

IT = V/ R
IT = 200/30 = 6.67 A
P= IV = (6.67A) (200V) = 1334 W

4. In the two-branch parallel circuit below, find the two values of inductance
L that will place the circuit under resonance conditions. Also find the
resulting line currents. The supply voltage is 230 volts, 60 Hz.

IV. Questions and Problems
V. Data analysis and Interpretation
In this experiment, the student is asked to run the Resonance Circuits. The student first conducts this
experiment in simulation using Multisim Software. The circuits have two runs which the first run is for a
series resonance circuit, and the second run for a parallel circuit. The voltage is given by the last two
numbers of the student. After setting up the circuit, the student-run the simulation then the student
begins the first trial. The first run will be composed of 10 attempts, and each test will start from 600 Hz
up to 1500 Hz. After conducting the first trial, the student observed the total current increase in the first
to fifth trials, and once it goes to the sixth trial, the total current decreases. The next run is the parallel
circuit. The second run will also have ten tests from 1000hz to 2000 Hz. After conducting the second run,
the student observed that the total current also increases while the frequency is increasing.

VI. Findings and Conclusion

The student concluded that the resonance frequency is the same irrespective of the connection
and value of resistance connected across the circuit. The student also concluded from the graphs
that the total current also decreases when the frequency is increasing. Therefore in the 2nd trial,
it is said that the frequency is directly proportional to the total current in a parallel circuit.
