C. Lesson Proper
ACTIVITY: (“YOU GOT ME FEELING EMOTIONS: Listening Activity)
Let ‘s listen to the selected music. Listen to the link below that feature one of the main sections of the mass.
1. (Medieval Period)
Gregorian chant - Deum verum: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK5AohCMX0U.
2. Gloria‖ by Joasquin de Prez: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaiXCG0jHB8
3. Handel - Concerto Grosso in D Minor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a32nicpS3rk

ANALYSIS
Answer the following questions:
1. Which music were you familiar with? Where did you hear it before?
2. How were you able to come up with the words that describe the song just by listening to it?
3. What period is being demonstrated in the activity? (Medieval, Baroque and Renaissance)
(Medieval period: The melody of a Gregorian chant is very free-flowing. The chant moves up and down
by steps and small leaps within a narrow range. Melodies are often melismatic- syllables are held out
over multiple notes.)
(Renaissance period: Gloria, has homophonic texture. While the Josquin piece has some short sections
of homophony, the fact that the Gloria is consistently homophonic provides a clear difference between
the two that you can hear)
(Baroque period: Concerto grosso (or the plural concerti grossi) is Italian for “big concerto”. Unlike a
solo concerto where a single solo instrument plays the melody line and is accompanied by the
orchestra, in a concerto grosso, a small group of soloists passes the melody between themselves and
the orchestra or a small ensemble.)

APPLICATION: Answer briefly
1. How does secular music of the Medieval Period differ from the Gregorian Chant?
(They do not have a rhythm, yet they do have regular meter and definite beat. That's their difference
from Gregorian Chant which has no meter at all. During the Middle Ages wandering minstrels (or
jongleurs) performed music and acrobatic tricks in castles, taverns, and town squares.)
2. Renaissance instrumental music was less important that the vocal music. How was the instrumental
music used then?
(At the beginning of the 16th century, instruments were considered to be less important than voices.
They were used for dances and to accompany vocal music. Instrumental music remained subordinated
to vocal music, and much of its repertory was in varying ways derived from or dependent on vocal
models.)
3. How were the elements of music used during the Baroque Period.
(Baroque music is characterised by: long flowing melodic lines often using ornamentation (decorative
notes such as trills and turns) contrast between loud and soft, solo and ensemble. a contrapuntal
texture where two or more melodic lines are combined.)
