I. BACKGROUND OF THE ACTIVITY

Geotechnical engineering is one of the principles of engineering that studies the behavior of

soils that are influenced by forces (Holtz,1981). It is used to design foundations, walls, dams, etc that

mainly interact with the ground. It also helps in the prevention and management of soil in any

project. It also helps in the prevention and management of soil in any project.

Soils are mainly used as construction materials. It is where structures are founded. Thus, soil

sampling and testing are vital in order to check whether the soil is appropriate to use in construction.

This laboratory report shows the procedure on how to perform soil sampling and preparation of

soil for testing. The selected area for the soil sampling was located at the back of the building of the

Colege of Human Ecology last August 28, 2022.

II. PURPOSE OF THE ACTIVITY

The activity aims to acquaint students to perform soil sampling and preparation of soil samples for

testing.

III. DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY

Date and Location

The activity was conducted last August 28, 2022, located at the back of the building of the

College of Human Ecology in Central Mindanao University, Musuan, Maramag, Bukidnon.

Materials

Students are instructed to wear protective clothing during the conduct of the activity. Materials

and tools are checked prior to the activity and were careful in using them.

Collection of Disturbed samples

The area of the soil sampling was first cleared out in order to rid of unwanted materials. The

desired depth of the collection of samples was 1.5 meters. A shovel and digging bar were used in

digging the hole. Soil samples for the disturbed samples were collected in the excavated soil and
placed fully in a ziplock, ensuring that there is no air inside. Four (4) bags of disturbed were

collected. The collected samples were then placed inside the storage box.

Collection of Undisturbed samples

In the same area where disturbed samples were taken, core samplers were placed to get

samples of undisturbed samples. Four (4) core samplers were then gently hammered into the

ground. The core samplers were then gently extracted using a digging bar, ensuring that the

samples are not damaged. The four (4) samplers were then wrapped with cling wrap and placed

inside in a ziplock without any air inside. The undisturbed samples were then placed in the storage

box together with the disturbed samples.

Storing the samples

The storage box containing the two (2) types of samples was safely stored in the College of
Engineering in preparation for testing.

IV. Equipment and materials used

The following materials were used in the activity:
1. Cling wrap
2. Tape measure
3. Core samplers (4)
4. Ziplock
5. Storage box
6. Shovel
7. Digging bar
V. CONCLUSION

Soil sampling is indeed important in geotechnical engineering. It is vital in preparation for sample

testing. Soil testing checks whether the soil is appropriate material to be used in construction. In preparing soil

samples, it is important to be more careful in handling undisturbed soil because it can be easily damaged or

broken. Proper execution of the procedure must be observed in order to get desired results.
