STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I am an Engineer by profession, but an Artist by passion. I like to think differently, innovate

artistically, beautify processes and improve people lives. Business has always fascinated me
for this very reason. Since childhood, the idea of running of large businesses has always
fascinated me. A real interest in the field of business started to develop when I started to see
my father build his own Textile firm from scratch. With this idea, I have always known that
my ultimate goal is to become a world-class business leader and one day work with my father
to augment the business and lives associated with the business.
Early in my life, at the high school level, I learnt the value of hard work and perseverance.
This led me to secure 99% percentile in my higher secondary examination. Later, this served
as a foundation for my studies in Mechanical engineering at the College of Engineering,
Pune, which ranks at the Top Engineering College in Maharashtra and 7th in India by Times
19 Ranking. During my engineering I use to read business books and I remember the book
‘How to lie with statistics’ by Darrell Huff, where I got the first insight of how statistics are
used by businesses and after reading and learning the concepts, I grew my interest in business
analytics. I may not have pursued a business degree at undergraduate level, and I never would
regret that. Engineering is one of the toughest studies and Mechanical is one of the toughest
in Engineering, with this effort I have developed a sharp mind and a consummate attitude
towards study and work. I am an Engineer, but I have always managed to link my knowledge
with businesses. Also, during my undergraduate course, I opted for a CEO role as the part of
course work for one semester. I had to develop an idea with my team members and decide the
roles of each member. Also, I was engaging all the team mates for the business and capturing
business requirements. We were among the best teams to develop and plan our idea sincerely.
I also remember our B.Tech project, where I was handling the management and requirements
of the team. I was the one in the team who made the 6-months timeline, and our monthly-
weekly-daily objectives. Even, I managed the funds received for the project. Due to proper
and sincere efforts, best grades are reflected on the mark sheet.
I also took part in Punt formation in Regatta event, a river sport type event. Managing punts
on the river is a very difficult task. We were 16 punts and we had to create different shapes
on river using these 16 punts. I still remember my Punt number was 12 and I was given the
task of guiding other 15 punts on the river. I was the anchor for other 15 punts, guiding them
to take different shapes. In my final year, I was the leader of Mechanical team of Robotics. I
used to handle the objectives for the mechanical team. Our objectives were design,
ergonomics, material selection etc. I have also done various courses from Coursera platform
to develop my business knowledge. Currently, I am enrolled for a course on Business
analytics by Wharton, University of Pennsylvania and I have completed Customer Analytics
module of the course. I am learning how data is used for performance evaluation, how to
solve business problems with data driven decision making and understanding tools to predict
customer behaviour. I also choose operational research in my elective course, due to interest
in business analytics, which will help me during the course work at your university.
After graduating, I launched an online laundromat service in Pune city. Our company name is
‘The Washing Company,’ which is the most popular top rated laundry service on Google in
India. We were the first to announce the One-Day Laundry pickup and deliver at your place
at comparatively low price. Starting from one part of Pune city, now we cover all the major
parts of the Pune city. With this business I have gained a lot of business knowledge, but I still
feel that I have a lot to learn. With the course modules at your university, I believe I can learn
analytics. These are the most important outlines of any business that I did not learn during my
Mechanical Engineering course.
After learning Business Analytics, I want to explore and analyse demographic data for our
business, predict what is likely to happen and optimize the decision accordingly. And so, I
want to educate myself further, so that after the course I can create a most successful
company ever.
From my third year I always wanted to pursue Masters in Business Analytics from United
Kingdom. United Kingdom has the best education for Business and Management studies. I
still remember the experience in United Kingdom when I was an Intern at Cranfield
University for 2 months. At Cranfield University, my work was to understand the data from
Li-S battery. With the help of Matlab software, I was analysing data, interpreting it and using
the results for decision making. I was able to plot various important charts in Matlab
software, which were later used by the university to develop the battery. I am eager to meet
new people, and discover new ways of thinking, and I have thus decided to pursue my
master’s degree in the UK in order to enrich myself with professional expertise in a
multicultural environment.
Recently, while choosing a mobile phone to purchase from the various companies in the
market, I made a table writing different important features of mobile such as battery,
performance, camera, brand value and cost price. I ranked these features according to my
importance. I then scored various phones on every feature and finally purchased One Plus 7t.
This is how business analytics can be used in day-to-day life too. So, to learn it at advance
level, MSc in Business Analytics is the next big step.
To achieve my objective, it is imperative for me to gain a sophisticated and wide knowledge
of all aspects of analytics in business. I got some very interesting information about my field
of study by browsing City, University of London’s website, and it has driven me to apply for
the MSc Business Analytics course offered at your prestigious University. Also, it is a point
to note that Cass Business School is one of the Top University in UK, which is my study
destination.
The modules of MSc Business include various desirable subjects such as risk, performance
and decision analysis which is my favourite, Mathematical programming that I can relate to
my experience with help of Matlab software, and many more that will help me improve my
cognizance in the field of business and I believe that studying at City, University of London
will give me the means to achieve my goals and realize my dreams. I therefore make an
earnest request to consider my application for admission at your university.
I am completely conscious of the fact that pursuing this course needs a high level of intellect,
devotion and huge detriment. I am self-confident that I have the ability to contribute
