Example 1:
Problem Statement : A simply supported reinforced
concrete beam of size 300 x 500 mm effective is reinforced
with 4 bars of 16 mm Ф HYSD steel of grade Fe415.
Determine the anchorage length of the bars at the simply
supported end if it is subjected to a factored shear force of
350 kN at the center of 300 mm wide masonry support.
The concrete mix of grade M20 is to be used.
Solution:
The cross-sectional dimensions and material properties
are:,
b = 300 mm
d = 500mm
Area of tension steel Ast(4 x 16 mmФ) = 804 mm2
fck = 20 Mpa and fy = 415 Mpa
Development length
0.87 𝑓𝑦 Ф
Ld =
4 Ʈ𝑏𝑑
Where Ʈbd = Design anchorage bond stress
= 1.92 Mpa (for M20 and Fe415)
Thus, Ld = (0.87 x 415 x 16)/(4 x 1.92) = 752.2 mm

For anchorage bond stress not to exceed its design value,

the following condition at the simply supported end of the
beam should be satisfied:
1.3 𝑀1
Ld ≤ ( ) + Lo
𝑉𝑢
Where, M1 = Ultimate moment of resistance of the section
at the support
Vu = Factored shear force at the center of the support
Lo = Anchorage length
To compute the value of M1, consider the section to be
under-reinforced. The depth of the neutral axis of such a
section is determined from
0.87 𝑓𝑦 𝐴𝑠𝑡
Xu =
0.36 𝑓𝑐𝑘 𝑏
= (0.87x415x804)/(0.36x20x300) = 134.39 mm

The limiting depth of the neutral axis for a balanced section

is given by
0.0035𝑑
Xu,max = 0.0055+ 0.87𝑓𝑦 /𝐸𝑠
= (0.0035 x 500) / [0.0055 + (0.87 x 415)/(2 x 10 5)]
= 239.6 mm
Since xu < xu,max it is an under-reinforced section,
Lever arm z = d - 0.416xu = (500 – 0.416 x 134.39)
= 444.09 mm
Limiting moment of resistance is given by
M1 = 0.87 fy Ast z
= 0.87 x 415 x 804 x 444.09 x 10-6
= 128.91 kNm
Thus,
128.91 ∗106
752.2 ≤ 1.3 x + Lo ≤ 478.80 + Lo
350 ∗103
Therefore,
Lo ≥ 273.4 mm
The minimum length of the bar to be extended beyond the
center of support is:
𝐿𝑑 𝑤𝑖𝑑𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡
= −
3 2
= (752.2/3) – (300/2) = 100.73 mm < Lo ( = 273.4)
Hence, Provide Lo = 273.4 mm ( = 275 mm)
Thank you
