INTRODUCTION
Art is human expression. This expression of man’s thoughts and emotions may take many
forms. It may be through the use of pencil on paper, paint on canvas, wood, clay, computer, tall
building, a novel, a song, a dance or a theatrical performance. Whatever choice is used would
largely depend on the artists’ inborn talents and acquired abilities. For two-dimensional and three-
dimensional art, an essential component of his chosen expression is the material that he chooses
to use to achieve this purpose.

Lesson 1: SUPPORT AND OTHER MATERIALS

PAPER
This is the most popular surface used for 2d
Artwork. Paper is an organic medium made from
cellulose pulp derived mainly from wood,
certain grasses and linen rags.
It is processed into flexible sheets or rolls.
Different Kinds of Paper Support
 Laid Paper
 Textured Pastel, Charcoal, and Craft paper
 Wove Paper
 Medium paper
 Hot-pressed paper

Laid Paper - Paper processed with a pattern of

parallel lines created by the wires of the mold used
for production. Some have pronounced surface
texture suitable for sketching with pastel, charcoal
and soft pencil

Rough-Grained paper - has a noticeably bumpy surface. In making rough paper, the pulp is
pressed without additional heat, so there is a natural variation in the surface. When shading with
chalk or flat pencil, the pits in the paper create an irregular pattern of white spots throughout the
area

Rough Grained Paper

Medium paper has a fine grain, which can look subtle when shading with a sharpened pencil. It
may also be accentuated by shading with a blunt pencil or charcoal.

Smooth Hot-pressed paper allows you to draw very fine detail without noticeable bumps or
texture. The amount of manipulation and type of medium depend on the quality of the fiber and
manufacturing process used.

CANVAS
This is made of closely woven, heavy cloth of cotton, hemp or linen onto which painting is done
usually in oils. Most ready-made canvases are already primed with acrylic gesso. Gesso is a generic
term that is used for the initial coat applied to a support before it is painted on.
The gesso allows the paint to stick the support for it affects the absorbency of the support.

paint is applied.

Three basic component of paints:

Pigments - This is the colored part of the paint. It
may be sourced from organic (Plants), or inorganic
(Rocks and Metallic Oxides materials. Pigments
can also be natural (From vegetables, insects,
minerals, or clay) or synthetic Made from
chemicals like distilling coal tars and residues of
petroleum.

Binder - This is the material that holds together the grains of pigment
and allows it to stick to the painting surface. Some examples of
blinders are egg yolks mixed with water, linseed oil and wax

Solvent - This is the liquid that controls the thickness of thinner

of the paint (Viscosity). Solvents are also used to clean paint
brushes and other tools that the artist may gave used during the
painting project

Different Kinds of Paints
ACRYLIC paints are extremely versatile,
and ideal for fine brushwork, glazing,
staining, water media techniques and many
more. This smooth and light paint has
excellent pigment quality, color strength,
and durability. The acrylic paint can be
applied to almost any stable surface like
watercolor paper or canvas. It is quick-
drying and can be purchased in a variety of
forms, like a tube or small ink-bottle
varying in viscosity.

Acrylic Paint Texture

Types of Acrylics
 Professional Acrylic - This type of acrylic paint resists chemical reactions from exposure to
water. Ultraviolet light and oxygen. It has highest carbon content which allows for more
manipulation and minor changes in color
 Student Acrylics -This has lower pigment concentration and smaller angle of colors. The
color brightness is also not intense.
 Scholastic Acrylics - The pigment content is less expensive and includes dyes in the
formulation. The range of colors is also limited to primary and secondary colors/

OIL

Oil-based paint is very durable and provides a

glossy-looking finish. Brushstrokes fill
themselves into a smooth, rich varnish. Oil-
based paint has long-lasting coverage and
blends well with others. This paint dries slowly
which works in a painter’s advantage since the
artist can develop the painting gradually,
making changes to the work along the way.
Don’t forget about water mixable oil paints.
Oil Paint Texture
Water mixable oil paint is oil paint with an
added emulsifier. This type of paint is water mixable, not water-based. This paint possesses
elasticity and is diluted thinly when more water is added.

WATER COLOR

Watercolor is a translucent paint containing pigment and a binder, typically gum-Arabic. The gum-
Arabic holds the paint together and ensures the paint will not flake. The paint has color pigment
suspended in water until the water dries and stains the surface. The paint brushes with fluidity and
transparency and dries fairly quickly.

Water Color Texture

GOUACHE

Gouache is a water-soluble and opaque paint so the white of the paper surface does not show
through. It is a tad chalkier than traditional watercolor and absorbs light rather than reflects it. The
paint is diluted with water, but possesses a strong colored pigment. This unique paint dries darker
and a little of it goes a long way and takes time to dry which means it can be workable for hours
or even days after application.

Gouache Texture

ENCAUSTIC

Encaustic is a wax-based paint with a

strong color pigment. A versatile paint
choice, encaustic has no solvents added
and is impervious to moisture. It is highly
durable and best used on a firm, absorbent
surface. Artists can use a heat source and
metal tools to begin working with this hot
liquid wax known as encaustic.

THREE BASIC KINDS OF PASTELS

Soft Pastels - These are traditionally

round and wrapped in a paper sleeve
whose function is to hold the pastel
together and also to prevent it from
breaking unnecessarily

Hard Pastels - These are sometimes referred

to as chalks. They have no paper sleeve and are
usually square. More binder is added to make
the stick stronger. Hard pastels can be
carefully sharpened making them ideal for
rendering details. Pastel pencils resembled
colored pencils but the pigment core is similar
to hard pastels. These are more and are useful
for adding detail images created by hard or soft
pastel. In this medium all different type and
brands can be intermixed

Oil Pastels - The pigment is bound in oil. It can
be brushed around on the support when moistened
with turpentine or white spirit. Oil pastels are also
wrapped in paper to hold it together and prevent
from breaking. This medium produces
compositions that are bold and colorful. Oil
pastels can be dissolved by spirits and can be used
like a wash. The range of hues are limited but
colors can be overlaid on the support.

Stippling - This application of pastel in broken pattern of small marks to produce an attractive
play of colors

Impasto - in this technique, pastel is pressed hard on to the support so as to leave a thick opaque
deposit of pigment

Sgrafitto - This technique is effective for oil pastel. This involves scraping of color to reveal the
tone of the support using a blunt pen knife.

Scumbling -A technique that involves building up the pastel painting in layers. The side or the
blunt tip of soft pastel is lightly drawing across the surface of the paper to create the effect of
delicate veil of color through which the underlying color is visible

Feathering - Laying delicate parallel strokes of color with the point of the pastel, usually over an
existing layer of pastel color.

Dry Wash - This is the method of laying a broad area of color in a uniform, unbroken tone. In
preparing this, a stick of pastel is scrape or crushed into fine powder. The powdered pastel is then
placed on the support. The pastel is then blended on the support using the fingers or any bleeding
tool.
Lesson 4: Collage

A technique of composing a work of art by

pasting on a single surface various materials not
normally associated with one another. Examples of
materials include newspaper clippings, parts of an
envelope, buttons, ribbons, cloth, shells, lace and
other found objects. Collage is derived from the
French word “Coller” which means to “To Stick”.
Collage became an art form during the synthetic
cubist period of Picasso and Braque

Basic steps for making collage:

 Collect the materials needed ro make the

collage. Collecting may take more than one day.
Put this collected objects in a box or small
pouch.
 Fold, cut or tear paper into different shapes
 Develop a theme or concept. It will be more
meaningful if the collage is built around a central idea or concept.
 Consider adding embellishments like ribbons, beads, strings, feather, or fabric.
 Figure out what support will be used for he collage. It should be strong enough to handle the
weight of the objects and it should be easy to display
 Assemble the pieces and map out what objects should be glued where. Move away from the
arrangement for a better perspective of the collage. Make changes before objects are finally
glued to the support
 Let the collage dry. Display the finish work

Lesson 5: Print Making

Print making is a process that

involves the repeated transferring of an
original image from a prepared surface
called a matrix (Printing Plate) onto
another surface usually paper.

 The impression created by the matrix

on the surface is called print.

The process of printmaking involves

three stages

1. Creating the matrix or the printing

plate - The plate may be made of metal,
woodblocks, stone slabs or silkscreens. The image created by the artist on the plate should be the
mirror image of the final print. Numbers and letters, for instance must be positioned backwards on
the matrix In preparing a matrix of wood or stone, the following steps may be undertaken:

Prepare the surface by light standing. Staining with a wash of acrylic paint may also be done.

Transfer the image to the surface of the plate. This may be accomplished by directly drawing on
the plate; drawing transfer through the use of charcoal or graphite pencil; carbon transfer through
the use of carbon paper or photocopy transfer through the use of heat solvent.

2. Inking the Plate - This stage involves applying ink to the matrix. A brayer, which is a roller
with a handle, is used for this task. For prints with different colors, one printing plate is made for
each other.

3. Transferring the Image - The surface onto which the print is to be transferred is pressed to the
plate. This action transfer the link to the new surface. This can be done by hand but for multiple
prints, a printing press is used. An edition refers to all prints made from a plate or set of plate

Materials used in Printmaking

Solvents - This may include water, vegetable oil and biodegradable degreasers or cleaners.
Although other solvents may use like acetone and denatured alcohol, their toxicity levels marks
them as low level references and if given another choice should be avoided

Inks and additives - the quality of the ink affects the prints produced. Oil based inks are
particularly used for relief, intaglio and lithography. This kind of ink can be used directly onto the
rag paper without the need for priming the surface, Water based inks does not require the use of
solvents for clean-up. These type is usually an acrylic product. Water-washable inks, on the other
hand, are oil-based and is designed to be cleaned by liquid hand soap and water.

Paper - The type of paper use for the print making process needs to be strong, will lasts longer,
have low acidity and should contain some linen or cotton fibers. This is known as the rag content
of the paper. The best paper types have neutral pH and 100% rag. The weight of the paper and its
surface texture should as considered.

Printing Techniques

1. Relief Printing - The matrix is carved with

knived or gouges. This action defines areas not to be
printed, be cut, carved away. The areas that are to
be printed are then left raised. Ink is applied to this
raised surfaces and the matrix is pressed to the
surface to transfer the image. The technique
includes woodcut and wood engraving.

2. Intaglio - These are created using metal

plates into which lines have been incised. The
plates are then converted with ink and the
surfaces are wiped off. The cut/incised
depressiins retain the ink whereas the flat
surfaces are clear. Paper is laid on top of the
plate and both are passed through a printing
press forcing the paper

3. Lithography - Lithography refers to a

lithograph print that is made from an image
which has been applied to a flat surface. It is a
method of printing based on the principle that
oil and water do not mix. Printing is done from
a stone (lithographic limestone) or a metal
plate with a grained surface; using oil-based
inks. The artist works on a separate stone or
plate for each color.

 Traditionally this flat surface was a

specially prepared limestone, but today
grained aluminum printing plates and the
original stones are used. An image is
drawn, painted or photographically applied
the stone or plate using a greasy medium. The
image will repel water and accept ink. The
inks are oil based and should be lightfast.

4. Etching -a method of making prints from a

metal plate, usually copper, into which the design has been incised by acid. The copperplate is first
coated with an acid-resistant substance, called the etching ground, through which the design is
drawn with a sharp tool. The ground is usually a compound of beeswax, bitumen, and resin. The
plate is then exposed to nitric acid or dutch mordant, which eats away those areas of the plate
unprotected by the ground, forming a pattern of recessed lines. These lines hold the ink, and, when
the plate is applied to moist paper, the design transfers to the paper, making a finished print.

MIXED ART MEDIA

This refers to works of visual arts that combines
various traditionally distinct art media. An
example will be a combination of paint, ink and
collage. Two or more artistic media are combined
by the artist into a single composition.
Common combinations include oil paints,
graphite, textiles or sculpture. Mixed Media can
include almost anything. The different
combinations of media of varying compositions,
colors, and texture can lead to interesting effects.

Lesson 6: Sculpture

Sculpture - an artistic form in which hard or plastic materials are worked into three-
dimensional art objects. The designs may be embodied in freestanding objects, in reliefs on
surfaces, or in environments ranging from tableaux to contexts that envelop the spectator. An
enormous variety of media may be used, including clay, wax, stone, metal, fabric, glass, wood,
plaster, rubber, and random “found” objects. Materials may be carved, modeled, molded, cast,
wrought, welded, sewn, assembled, or otherwise shaped and combined.
Techniques in Sculpture
Subtraction - This method in which sculptors cut away or remove pieces or parts of the
material such as stone or wood. Special tools are used by the artiest to achieve this purpose.
This includes chisels, hammers, torches, saws, grinders, and polishers
Manipulation - This process is also known as modeling. Manipulation usually involves the
use of pliable medium such as clay, wax, or plaster. This technique is classified as direct
method of treating the form of the image.
Addition - This technique involves putting together materials through the use of welding
torches, soldering guns, stapler bolts, screws, nails, rivets, glue and rope or string.
 When a sculpture is too heavy, internal supports like wires are used. The material is then
attached to this wire.
Substitution - This is known as casting. This involves the reproduction of an original 3D
Image in a new material by using a mold.
 The goal of substitution is to duplicate the form or image in a more permanent material

TYPES OF SCULPTURE

Additive Sculpture
The most typical medium used for additive sculpture
is wax or clay. As opposed to subtractive sculpting,
which involves removing substances from a sculpture,
additive sculpting is flexible.
It allows an artist the freedom, expression, and
opportunity to rework the sculpture if desired. With
certain mediums, molds created from the additive
sculpture are cast in a more permanent material, such
as bronze.

Casting Sculpture
Casting is a manufacturing process
in which a liquid material is usually
poured into a mold, which contains
a hollow cavity of the desired
shape, and then allowed to solidify.
The solidified part is also known as
a casting, which is ejected or
broken out of the mold to complete
the process. Casting materials are
usually metals or various time
setting materials that cure after
mixing two or more components;
examples are epoxy, concrete,
plaster, and clay.
Mold in used in Casting Sculpture

Subtractive Sculpture
The subtractive sculpture is the oldest form of
sculpture and involves removing material, as
in wood carving or stone sculpture, to create a
finished work. The subtractive sculpture is by
far the most technically difficult and due to the
nature of the medium is the most restrictive in
expression.
Subtractive sculpture is made by subtracting
material from stone or wood, or some other
material.

Kinetic Sculpture
Kinetic Sculpture is made from any medium that contains movement perceivable by the viewer or
depends on motion for its effect. There is also a portion of kinetic art that includes virtual
movement, or rather movement perceived from only certain angles or sections of the work. More
pertinently speaking, kinetic art is a term that today most often refers to three-dimensional
sculptures and figures such as mobiles that move naturally or are machine operated

Installation/Site Specific

These are among the modern and developed forms

of sculpture. Installation art utilizes multiple
objects, often from various mediums, and takes up
entire spaces. It can be generic or site-specific.
Because of their relative complexity, installations
can address aesthetic and narrative ideas on a
larger scale than traditional sculpture. Installations
focus more on the arrangement used, use of space
and surrounding environment within the artwork,
the artwork is seen as a whole together with the site
the work is set in.

Assemblage Sculpture
This is also called scrape art an assemblage is a form of sculpture comprised of “found” objects
arranged in such a way that they create a piece. These objects can be anything organic or man-
made.
Assemblage sculpture is the bonding of shapes or objects by gluing, soldering, pasting, nailing,
etc. These objects tend to be mainly found objects. An assemblage is a three- dimensional collage.
