Workshop – Week 1 Conversation

INTRODUCTION

Aims: To do a warm-up.
To introduce the topic.
To practise the language of advertising.

Materials: Flashcards – Introduction

Procedure:

1. T greets SS and asks them how they are.


2. T puts the flashcards face down on the table and explains the task.
3. SS take it in turns to draw a flashcard and advertise the type of product from the photo. SS
cannot show their flashcards to one another. The other SS are to guess the advertised product.
4. T elicits the topic of the lesson.
5. T asks a few introductory questions, e.g. Is advertising helpful in your life? If yes, how?
What products are most often advertised? Which products are not allowed to be
advertised? What kind of people do they use in the adverts of the products in the
photos? Which products often use families in their adverts? Do you remember
adverts for a long time?

EXERCISE 1

Aims: To practise making an advert for a certain product.

Materials: Student’s Worksheet A – Exercise 1


Student’s Worksheet B – Exercise 1
Student’s Worksheet C – Exercise 1

Procedure:

1. T divides SS into three groups and explains the task.


2. Each group is given a different worksheet.
3. SS make an advert for the product in the photo. They need to use their imagination to make up
a catchy advertising slogan and a description of the product.
4. T walks around the classroom and monitors SS’ work. If necessary T may help with the
language.
5. For feedback, T has each group advertise their product in front of the whole class.

20 min.

EXERCISE 2

Aims: To practise speaking.

Materials: Student’s Worksheet – Exercise 2

Procedure:

1. T explains the task and distributes the worksheets.


2. All SS discuss the questions. If the group is more advanced, T may have SS discuss the
questions first in pairs, then ask them to report on what they have found out to the other SS. T
monitors SS’ work and records their major mistakes.
3. T discusses SS’ mistakes.

Discuss the following questions.

1. Where can advertisements be found?


2. Which advertising is more effective: on TV, on the radio or on the
billboards?
3. Should they be limited to certain places?
4. In what ways are people influenced by advertisements?
5. How has advertising changed over the years?
6. Have the purpose, language, techniques and images changed?
7. What is your opinion on advertising alcohol and cigarettes? Is it legal in
your country?
8. Is it acceptable to use children or nudity in advertisements?
9. What is an advertisement that you really like right now? Why do you like
it? Is it effective?
10. What is an advertisement that you really dislike right now? Why?
11. What do advertising agencies do to make an advert more interesting
and effective?
12. Is advertising manipulative by nature?
13. Should advertising aimed at children be allowed? Why?
14. How much advertising is too much, e.g. hanging advertisements from
buildings preventing people from seeing out their windows; flyers on
every corner, etc. ?
15. Do you think the use of colour in advertising has an effect on you? Why?
