CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Of Study

When we meet someone and want to talk, we don't get to the point. We
will greet them first to show courtesy and friendliness. The greeting is usually
followed by small talk to lighten the mood. People who know each other and
see each other every day do not shake hands. However, for those who know
each other, but haven't seen each other for a long time, greetings become
enthusiastic and sometimes accompanied by gestures, such as shaking hands
between men and men, hugging between men and women, or kissing the
cheeks between women and men, woman.

In greeting, when meeting someone we have not known before, we need to

introduce ourselves to show politeness and friendliness. Moreover, it may feel
awkward when we chat and talk about something without introducing
ourselves to the person we are talking to. The person will feel uncomfortable.
That is why, after greeting, we need to introduce ourselves by name before
continuing the conversation.

In introducing ourselves, we must remember that English culture is not the

same as Indonesian culture. In Indonesia, it's common when we hear someone
talk about their family, son, or even a story when we meet someone on the bus
or train. We share personal information freely. However, in English culture,
we only need to introduce our name stating our age, religion, political opinion,
marital status, size of our opinion, or family because the information is
considered private, unless the information is absolutely necessary.

Thank you, Santi, have a good day”
Santi: “See you later”.

Example dialog greetings 2: 1 p.m o’clock

Isyana: “Good afternoon Mrs. Lori”

Mrs. Anggun: “Good afternoon Isyana, can I help you?”
Isyana: “Have you seen Raisa today?”
Mrs. Anggun: “No I haven’t. Her mom told me that Raisa got a fever and needs to
rest” 2
Isyana: “Really? I didn’t know that. I think I’m going to visit her after the school”
Mrs. Anggun: “That’s good. Send her my regards. I’m sorry I could not
visit her” Isyana: “I’ll send her your regards, Mrs. Anggun. Thank you
for telling me. See you later” Mrs. Anggun: “Take care, Isyana”
Isyana: “Thank you, Mrs. Anggun”.

Example dialog greetings 3: 8 p.m o’clock

2
Ibid, 1
Dian: “Good evening, Raisa”
Raisa: “Hi Dian, I never thought you would come to see me”
Dian: “Mrs. Lori told me that you got a fever. Are you okay?”
Raisa: “I’m getting better anyway”
Dian: “Actually, I made some chicken soup for you”
Raisa: “Wow, thank you very much. You are really my best friend”
Dian: “You’re welcome. By the way, Mrs. Lori sends her regards for you”
Raisa: “I hope I can go to school as soon as possible”
Dian: “Well, I think I have to go home now. It is getting late”
Raisa: “Okay then, thank you Dian. You just made
my day” Dian: “My pleasure. See you at school
Raisa, good night” Raisa: “Good night, Dian”. 3

2.3 Type Expressing of Greetings

Generally, expressions for greetings are divided into 3 types, namely timed-
based greetings, formal greetings, and informal greetings.

1. Time-based Greetings
This type of expression of greeting is used based on the time when 2 people
meet and have conversational interactions.

Example 1:

Sandi: “Good
morning, Agnes”.
Agnes: “Good
morning”.

Example 2:

Budi: “Good
afternoon, Sandi”.

3
Ibid, 1.
Sandi: “Good
afternoon”.

Another Example:

Sandi: “So, have you finished with your task?”

Ratna: “Yes. Thank you for your help.”
Sandi: “You’re welcome. So, I’ll see you again tomorrow. Good
night, Ratna.” Ratna: “Good night.”

From this example, Sandi and Ratna will not meet again until the next day. So
use the expression "good night" instead of "good bye".

2. Formal Greetings
When we meet someone for the first time, we usually say "How do you do".

Example:

Slamet: “Hey Rudi, I want you to meet my friend, Salam.”

Rudi: “How do you do, Salam.” 4
Salam: “How do you do too.”
From this example, we can see that Rudi uses the expression “how do you do”
when greeting Salam which he has never met before. In addition to "how do
you do" again, we can also use "nice to meet you" or "please to meet you" for
people we are meeting for the first time. The most commonly used formal
greeting expression is "how are you". This expression is used when people
meet at any time, whether they meet every day or who rarely see each other.
Here's an example.

Example:

Anto: “Good morning, Radit.”

Radit: “Good morning, Anto.”
4
Sultan, Arni Arsyad. “Salam Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Indonesia sebagai Adjacency Pairs: A
Pragmatic Study.” Jurnal Bahasa Inggris dan Sastra 7.1 (2020): 36-48.
Anto: “How are you today?”
Radit: “Well, not really well. I couldn’t sleep last night. I
have a toothache now.”

Anto: “Oh, I am really sorry to hear that.”

Example:

Susi: “Hey … April? Is that you?”

April: “Hi … mmh … Susi? Wow it’s been a long time.”
Susi: “Yes, it’s me. How are
you, friend?” April: “I’m fine,
thank you. How about you?”
Susi:“Very well, thanks”.

From example 1, we can see that Anto and Radit are friends who meet every
day. 5

Anto asked how Radit was doing by using the expression "how are you today".
While in the second example, Susi and April are 2 friends who have only
recently met again.

The response to the greeting expression "How are you" is adjusted to the
conditions or circumstances of the other person. The following are commonly
used to respond.

• I am fine, thank you

• Very well, thank you/ thanks
• Not bad
• I am not really well
• I’m good
• You can also use the expression “how are you” “how are you”.

5
Ibid, 36-48.
3. Informal Greetings

Informal greetings are greeting expressions that are commonly used for
people who are close to us such as family and close friends. This
expression is usually used by young people with each other.

The following are examples of informal greeting expressions:

• Hi
• Hello
• What’s up?
• How’s life?
• How is it going?
• How is it going?
• The answers to this type of informal expression are quite varied. 6
• Phrases like “hi” or “hello”, the response is usually the same.
While other expressions can use the response as in the greetings
expression form. For example, “I am fine”, “Fine, thank you”. 7

response you give should have the same level of formality as the introduction,
whether it is formal or informal.
