CURRENT ISSUE: 2022 ELEACTIONS

It's no exaggeration to claim that the Filipino youth will have a role in who wins the national elections in
2022. According to data released by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in September, more than
half of the 63 million Filipinos who had registered to vote in next year's elections were between the ages
of 18 and 30. The figure has risen to 67.5 million as of December 14, although it's safe to infer that a large
portion of that is made up of young individuals.
In many ways, 2022 is the year in which young Filipinos can have a significant and long-lasting impact
on the country. In the year 2022, young Filipinos will have the opportunity to decide who would rule the
country for the next six years.
Many people regard Philippine politics as caustic, difficult, and even dull. But, if you haven't already,
2022 is the year to get involved in politics. Politics dictates who governs, and governance has an impact
on every part of life, from your current power bill to traffic congestion that keep you late for class to who
survives and dies in a COVID-19 hospital.
Marielle Marcaida, an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of the
Philippines, outlined how a complete political novice might become more knowledgeable and informed
about the 2022 contenders and the governance issues on which they should be judged
The department is in charge of the UP Sa Halalan 2022 campaign, which aims to inform voters about the
upcoming election.
“I agree that more young people are getting involved in the upcoming elections because a lot of them
have lost opportunities for proper education, employment, and livelihood, and even the loss of loved ones
due to the pandemic,” said Marcaida.
“This coming elections is a crucial one because the next president will be deciding our future for the next
six years, which are the most formative years of young adulthood of the members of this sector,” she
added.
If you are really concerned about a particular issue, you might compare the candidates to how you want
the issue to be handled. Certain topics, Marcaida believes, would connect especially with young Filipinos.
After you've spent enough time immersed in the problem you care about, you'll be able to better evaluate
politicians' pledges on that issue.
