Region
is a rectangular region.
𝑅 = 𝑎, 𝑏 × 𝑐, 𝑑 = {(𝑥, 𝑦)|𝑎 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 𝑏, 𝑐 ≤ 𝑦 ≤ 𝑑}
𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦)is continuous on 𝑅 and 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) ≥ 0 for all (𝑥, 𝑦) ∈ 𝑅
Volume
Partition 𝑎, 𝑏 into 𝑚 equal
subinterval of length of ∆𝑥 and 𝑐, 𝑑
into 𝑛 equal subintervals of length

The area of the 𝑅𝑖 is ∆𝐴𝑖 = ∆𝑥 ∙ ∆𝑦

subrectangle 𝑅𝑖 .

Construct a prism with 𝑅𝑖 as the

base and 𝑓(𝑥𝑖∗ , 𝑦𝑖∗ ) as the height.

The volume of the prism is ∆𝐴𝑖 ∙

Volume
The volume of a prism is ∆𝐴𝑖 ∙

෍ ∆𝐴𝑖 ∙ 𝑓(𝑥𝑖∗ , 𝑦𝑖∗ )

𝑖=1
Volume

Let 𝑁 = 𝑚𝑛, as we increase the number of

subrectangles, we get closer to the exact
volume,

𝑉 = lim ෍ ∆𝐴𝑖 ∙ 𝑓(𝑥𝑖∗ , 𝑦𝑖∗ )

𝑁→∞
𝑖=1
Example

Approximate ‫ ׭‬8 − 2𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 𝑑𝐴 over the region 𝑅 = 0,1 × [0,2]

Double Integral over Rectangular

𝑅 𝑁→∞
𝑖=1

If it exist.

Remark: It gives the net signed volume of the solid bounded by the surface.

‫𝑥 𝑓 𝑅׭‬, 𝑦 𝑑𝐴:= (volume of the portion above the 𝑥𝑦 plane) - (volume of the
