Solves Problems Involving Quadratic Inequalities

Here are the suggested steps that you can follow in solving word problems.

A. Read the problems several times until you understand it.

B. Determine what is being asked in the problem.
C. Represent the unknown in the problem by a variable/s and formulate an
inequality based on the conditions given in the problem.
D. Solve the inequality.
E. Check your answer. The answer must satisfy the conditions given in the

problem.
Example #1
The product of a positive number and 3 more than the number is at least 180.
What range of values of the number will satisfy this requirement?
SLIDESMANIA.COM

Since our first number is a positive number,

we will disregard -15. Therefore 𝒙 ≥ 𝟏𝟐.
Example #2
The width of a rectangle is 6𝑐𝑚 shorter than its length. Find the possible lengths
if the area of the rectangle is at least 667 𝑐𝑚2 .
SLIDESMANIA.COM

Since we are looking for the dimension, we will

disregard -23. Therefore 𝒙 ≥ 𝟐𝟗.
Example #3
The width of a rectangle is 5𝑐𝑚 shorter than its length. If the area of the rectangle
is at most 36 𝑐𝑚2 , what are the possible integral values of the length?
SLIDESMANIA.COM

Since we are looking for the dimension,

we will disregard -4. Therefore 𝒙 ≤ 𝟗.
A Quadratic Inequality can be written into form.
The general forms of the quadratic inequalities are the following:

𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄 < 𝟎
𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄 ≤ 𝟎
𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄 > 𝟎
𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄 ≥ 𝟎

where a, b, and c are real numbers, and a is not zero.

QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS

A quadratic function is a second-degree polynomial of the 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐, or

𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐, where a, b, and c are real numbers and a≠ 0.

The highest exponent of the variable 𝑥 is 2. The graph of a quadratic function is

smooth curved called parabola. Parabola may open upward or downward and vary
in “width” or “steepness” but they all have the same basic ∪ shape. A parabola has
a line of symmetry which means that part of it on one side of the line reflects the
part on the other side. The point where the line of symmetry crosses the parabola,
or it is the turning point is called the vertex.

Example #1
Is the given expression a quadratic function or not?
𝑦 = (𝑥 – 2) (𝑥 – 5)

Represents Quadratic Function Using
Table of Values, Graphs, and Equations

A quadratic function can be presented using table of values, graphs, and equations.

In a table of values of a quadratic function, equal differences in x produce equal second

differences in y. The graph is a smooth curve which is called a parabola. The quadratic function
has a form of 𝒚 = 𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄, or 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄, where 𝑎, 𝑏, and 𝑐 are real numbers
and 𝒂 ≠ 𝟎. It can also be written in another form which is the vertex form 𝒚 = 𝒂 𝒙 – 𝒉 𝟐 + 𝒌
𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 (𝒉, 𝒌) is the vertex of the graph of a quadratic function.

Example #3
Complete the table of values and then graph the given quadratic function y = x 2

x -2 -1 0 1 2
y 4 1

A quadratic function can be represented
through table of values, graph, and
equation.

In a table of values, a quadratic function

has equal differences in x produces equal
second differences in y.

The graph of a quadratic function is a

smooth curve called parabola.
