Completing the square is another method used to
solve quadratic equations. A factoring technique on
creating a perfect square trinomial.

Quadratic Equations by Completing
the Square
In completing the square, the constant term in the trinomial is equal to
the square of one- half of the coefficient of the x-term. This
relationship allows us to form a perfect square trinomial 𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄 in
variable x by adding a proper constant term.
𝑎𝑥 𝟐 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0

To solve for the roots of a quadratic equation using completing
the square, follow the following steps:

1. Rewrite the equation where the constant term is on the other side.
2. Take half of b and square the result.
3. Add the square to each side of the equation.
4. Write the left side as a perfect square and simplify the right side.
5. Use the square root property to solve for x.
6. Simplify.
Note: If a > 1, divide all the terms of the equation by the numerical
coefficient of 𝑥 2 .
