Delivery Mode: Workshop-lecture-discussion (Face-to-Face)

The method of instruction will be participant-centered learning.

participatory techniques will be used by the facilitators. The

experiential approach ensures that lessons can be applied in practice

and the workplace.

Target Personnel: (3) School Paper Advisers and

(12) members of Harbinger Editorial Staff

Budget Requirements: MOOE

Rationale: One of the main concerns of school newspaper advisers and campus

journalists is a lack of training and exposure to the fundamentals of

campus journalism. Though not fully representative of the condition

of campus journalism in the country, such concern indicates that there

is growing concern about the quality and efficiency of campus writers

produced. The government attempted to address such concerns in the

late 1990s with the passage of the Campus Journalism Act of 1991

and its implementing guidelines; however, the law itself, including

the traditional district, division, regional, and national competitions, is

insufficient to address all of the needed skills of campus journalists.

For these reasons, more lectures and workshops on topics that could

benefit our school newspaper advisers and campus journalists are

needed. To improve the skills and knowledge of both school paper

advisers and campus journalists in writing articles for school

publications, new insights must be injected into existing ones.

As a result, this concurrent training aims to improve the journalistic

skills of school paper advisers/campus journalists while also

providing them with much-needed skills in the field of journalism.

R.A. 7079 or the Campus Journalism Act of 1991, seeks to “uphold

Legal Basis:
and protect the freedom of the press even at the campus level” as

stated in the law’s Section 2 (Declaration of Policy). The law also

aims to “promote the development and growth of campus journalism

as a means of strengthening ethical values, encouraging critical and

creative thinking, and developing moral character and personal

discipline of the Filipino youth (Sec. 2).”

Objectives: This training aims to:

1. Train campus journalists on specific journalism events;

2. Coach campus journalists into enhancing their competitive

journalism skills;

3. Enhance teamwork of the whole school editorial staff;

4. Prepare the campus journalists in their participation to the Division

Schools Press Conference;

5. Develop the specific journalism skills of the young journalists and

come up with competitive ones who will succeed in the regional and

national level of competitions.
