I. Introduction

As time passes, the rapid progress of computers has become more

prominent. With further technical developments in the future, our society will

continue to grow at a faster rate than ever before. This trend is to be expected to

continue in the following years. On the other hand, the maintenance, installation,

and repair of its hardware and software components become more difficult to fix.

Nowadays, some of us might have already experienced slowness, crashing,

freezing, overheating, black/white screens on our computers. Also, few individuals

have encountered disruption to their software programs caused by viruses and

malware attacks. Those are just some of the issues that damage our computers'

hardware and software components. With that being said, the only solution that we

always come up with is to let the computer repair technician fix or repair it.

The career of a computer repair technician is one of the significant

professions in our industry. One of its roles was to serve as the primary point of

contact for computer issues within a company or with its client. Although many

individuals use computers daily, their understanding of computer technology may

be limited. Repairing their own computer without further knowledge, skills, and

experience in information technology might be impossible. So, computer repair

technicians are the ones who provide information, instruction, and advice to their

clients about the technical issues that are happening to their computers. Someone

passionate about fixing errors, has great troubleshooting ability, competitive skills,

and good vision in computers would be a great fit for this role. Some of us might

think that becoming one of them is as cool as it seems. However, there are still

several factors that need to be considered in starting a career as a computer repair

technician.

II. Background of the Study

As computer users continuously increase there is also an increasing

demand for skilled computer repair technicians. In developed countries from 2005

– to 2019, the percentage of homes owning a personal computer was closer to

80%, (Alsop, 2021). In the United States, the computer repair technician job market

is expected to grow by 11.3% between 2016 and 2026, whereas there are currently

an estimated 636,600 computer repair technicians (Flynn, 2019). Obviously,

computers, like anything else, always change, update and wear out over time.

While some individuals might be impossible to repair their own as they lack

knowledge about computers. On the other hand, it somehow can be turned into an

opportunity for computer repair technicians who knows how to repair computers.

Computer repair technicians are professionals who handle the installation, repair,

and maintenance of computer systems (hardware and software components) to

optimize and maximize the functionality of their clients’ computers.

According to the Bureau of Local Employment of the Philippines, Information

Technology remains in demand nowadays because most companies are now

using computers and digital technologies. Computer repair technicians are also in

high demand both locally and abroad. The majority of them in local work as

freelancers and only a few of them work in a company. As stated by Aniceto Bertiz,

the deputy director-general at Technical Education and Skills Development

Authority (TESDA), to fill the growing demand for computer repair technicians and

services, the high school graduates who failed to enroll in college and even the

returning OFWs could undergo training as computer systems servicing. He also

stated that in 2021, the national government invested P9 billion in the DepEd

computerization program. As they know that the DepEd will soon need hundreds

of technicians to handle their digital technologies.

The researcher conducts this study to determine the skills, competencies,

and knowledge of a computer repair technician to prepare oneself first before

starting a career choice in his field of study. Thus, this study would like to know the

factors that need to be considered in starting a career as a computer repair

technician. Knowing these factors will help the researcher gain an in-depth

knowledge of how an actual computer technician works. Also, gaining a pearl of

wisdom from an experienced professional increase the possibilities of success

while decreasing the failure rate.

III. Research Problem

Identify the factors that need to be considered before starting a profession

as a computer repair technician. Obviously, an individual’s lack of knowledge and

preparation about the career that they want to pursue will reduce their success

rate. Pursuing a career of a computer repair technician is not just all about because

an individual wanted to, but also considering if their skills perfectly matched the

career and may possibly be a problem for them, if not.

Determine the greatest and least significant factors that must be properly

considered in starting a career as a computer repair technician. Individuals must

know how to prioritize the things that they must learn in order to achieve greater

success in their careers. They must focus on the greatest significant factors of a

computer repair technician as it will help the individual the most in their career

while focusing less on the least significant factors.

The computer repair technician industry does have low security of entry and

qualifications in starting a computer repair service. Everyone can start their own

service of computer repair, unlike the other professions that for them to enable to

provide service they must provide proof of certification. Scammers pretend to be

computer repair technicians, instead of fixing the computer better, they make it

worse than before.

IV. Scope and Limitation

The study will focus on determining the factors that need to be considered

in starting a career as a computer repair technician. This study will discuss why it

is necessary to research computer repair technician professions before becoming

one. The respondents of the study are 18 – 50 years old computer repair

technicians or in computer repair services who have the knowledge and

experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of a computer. A sample of

30 computer repair technicians who are either classified as freelancers, self-

employed, or company-based workers. And the study will be conducted in

Calamba City, Laguna, and limits its coverage at year 2022.
