The meaning of any language symbol depends to some extent on the context in which it occurs. Here are two 'narratives' that are rather vague because a lot of details are missing, but in each group the mere
(a) ... pain ... clinic ... doctor ... examine ... surgery ... hospital ... nurses ... surgeon ... successful operation ... quick recovery
(b) ... rocket ... preparation ... countdown ... blastoff ... orbit ...
The term successful operation occurs in both stories. Does it seem to have the same meaning in both of them?

Yes, it is. (answering the question) -질문에 대한 긍정의 대답으로 ‘Yes, it is’이기 때문에 음을 falling 으로 말해야 한다.
Yes, it is. (contradicting)- 반박, 모순적인 상황에서 쓰였기 때문에 falling 에서 rising 으로 바뀐다.

(a) The index finger of one hand points at someone and the hand is moved up and down three or four times with deliberate motion ('shaking a finger at someone').

shrugging shoulders’, 즉 어깨를 으쓱이는 제스쳐는 상황에 따라 많은 뜻을 가지고 있는데 대표적인 예시로 잘 모르겠다는 대답을 할 때, ‘난 정말 신경 안 써.’ 라는 대답을 할 때 주로
사용되는 제스쳐이다.
(d) Hands are clasped across each other, palm against palm, and forearms move back and forth; this gesture can be executed in front of oneself or over one's head ('shaking hands with oneself').
shaking hands with oneself 는 자기 자신과 악수를 하는 제스쳐를 의미하는데 이러한 제스쳐는 주로 승리의 신호로 자기 자신에 대한 자부심 혹은 명예스러운 성과를 얻었을 때 많은 사람들
(e) Hand is held on the stomach, palm inward, and the hand makes a
circular movement.
(f)The tongue moves back and forth over the lips ('licking one's lips').
혀로 입술을 핥는 제스쳐는 주로 상대방을 놀릴 때 사용된다. 때에 따라서 입맛을 다시는 의미로 해석이 될 수도 있다.
(g) The palm of one hand is brought up and slaps smartly against the forehead.
자신의 손바닥으로 이마를 때리는 행위는 무엇을 깜빡했을 때나 뒤늦게 어떤 사실을 깨달았을 때 주로
사용되는 제스쳐이다.
(h) The hand, slightly cupped, is pulled across the forehead as if wiping something away.
(i) The index finger is pulled across the throat; the gesture may be accompanied by a noise that is made
with movement of air (and saliva) on one side of the mouth while the lips are slightly open on that side.
손가락으로 목을 가로지르는 듯한 제스쳐는 목이 잘리는 것과도 비슷한 느낌을 준다. 따라서 누군가에게
죽고 싶냐와 같은 무거운 뜻이 담긴 경고를 할 때 주로 사용된다.
( j) The fingers of the two hands are interlocked and the thumbs move in circles around each other
('twiddling one's thumbs").
모든 손가락을 맞물리고 엄지 손가락만 원을 그리며 빙빙 돌리는 제스쳐는 지루하거나 딴청을 피울 때 또는
고민을 하거나 심각한 상황에서 생각이 필요할 때 하는 행동이다.
In a class composed of students from different countries it will be interesting to compare the signals
made in the following situation:
(a) Two people who are acquainted see each other at some distance and greet each other with a gesture.
(b) Two people who have been together move apart and give each other a farewell signal.
(c) One person signals to another one to come forward.
(d) One hand is used to indicate the height of a child or of some object.
(e) The gesture-maker wants to indicate himself/herself.
(f) A movement to signal agreement or an affirmative answer.
(g) A movement to signal a negative answer.
(h) A way of indicating one's opinion that some other person is 'crazy:
politician, statesman – 두 단어의 공통적인 의미는 정치인이지만 politician 은 부정적인 의미로 정치꾼을 나타내고, statesman 이 조금 더 평판이 좋고 긍정적인 이미지를 가지고 있다.
lawyer, shyster – 두 단어의 공통적인 의미는 변호사이지만 shyster 은 사기꾼, 평판이 좋지 않은 부정적인 변호사의 의미를 가지고 있다. 특히 서양에서는 변호사의 직업이 좋은 직업은
아니라고도 한다.
bargain, haggle - 두 단어의 공통적인 의미는 합의, 흥정을 뜻하고 있지만 bargain 이 좋게 합의를 본다는 뜻을 가지고 있는 반면, haggle 는 실랑이를 벌여가며 흥정을 하는 부정의 의미를
가지고 있다.
cautious, timid - 두 단어의 공통적인 의미는 조심스러운, 신중한 뜻을 가지고 있는 단어지만 timid 는 소심하고 자신감이 없다는 부정적인 이미지를 가지고 있다.
inquisitive, nosey- 두 단어의 공통적인 의미는 꼬치꼬치 캐묻는다는 뜻을 가지고 있지만 nosey 는 너무 개인적인 일에 참견한다는 부정적인 이미지를 가지고 있다.
sensitive, touchy- 두 단어의 공통적인 의미는 예민하다는 뜻을 가지고 있지만 touchy 는 너무나도 과민하고 예민하다는 이미지가 강하고, sensitive 는 positive 가 포함되어 세심한, 감성적인
뜻을 지닌다
