The Situation
Nationalism
Indigenous Displacement
During Rizal’s Time
Nationalism before is a risky
and life-threatening act. It
takes a brave soul and
intense love for the country to
show nationalism. Rizal's
nationalistic stance was
prompted by the Spanish
religious and governmental
authorities' injustices,
mistreatment, and
exploitation of the natives.
Through his literary works,
such as novels and poems,
Rizal promoted nationalism
by instilling a sense of
patriotism among his
fellowmen.
All of the islands in the
archipelago of the Philippines
were considered Spanish
territory. Those who did not
have land titles, notably
Filipinos, had no lawful claim
and rights to their homeland.
Injustices have existed
between the Spaniards and
our forefathers, and Rizal
was no exception. He
recounted periods when
locals were prohibited from
pursuing farmland. They are
only allowed to rent, and
friars took a large percentage
of wealth, despite the
tenants, who are our
ancestors, are doing all of the
hard labor.
During our Time
Nationalism could be easily
presented in the present time
compared to the past. Today,
by respecting our flag,
patronizing and supporting
local products, preserving
and valuing our culture and
traditions, we can express
our idea of nationalism. We
can easily take our stand and
pride to fight for our rights
and dignity as Filipino.
Without shedding blood and
risking our lives, we can
proudly raise our flag.
Indigenous displacement is
still practiced in some places
today. Today's Lumads in
Mindanao face a similar
issue. They are persecuted
and attacked for defending
what is legitimately theirs
from foreign investors and
mining companies' vested
interests. They are constantly
battling for their rights to live
peacefully in their own
country.
