These days, people’s workplaces are constantly changing and evolving to meet the
demands of modern society. Furthermore, the roles and responsibilities of jobs are also
undergoing changes to adapt to new ways of working and living. This essay will discuss
the possible reasons for these changes, and suggest some ways that people can better
prepare themselves for their future careers.
Firstly, due to the developments in hi-tech machines and artificial intelligence, millions
of people all around the world are losing their jobs and being replaced by automated
processes. For example, millions of factory workers have lost their jobs because
they have been replaced by machines that are able to do their job quicker and more
effectively.(1) Furthermore, as a result of the ever-increasing desire to cut expenses
and increase profits, many jobs are being outsourced to countries where the wages are
lower. For instance, when a person calls a tech support help line in an English speaking
country, they will most likely be connected to someone in another country, like India
or Philippines, where the wages are lower.(2)
However, there are a number of ways that people can prepare for changes in their
workplaces in the future. Firstly, students preparing to leave high school need to be
advised about the sustainability of the career path they are choosing. To illustrate,
autonomous vehicles are predicted to replace most delivery and taxi driver jobs in the
very near future, so this is not a job that someone should expect to have for a very long
time. Furthermore, while some jobs are being replaced by technology, many jobs are
simply incorporating technology into their process, and therefore people will need to
be able to keep up to date with these changes.(3) To help achieve this, specific courses
could be designed to help educate people on the use of modern technology in their
workplaces.
In conclusion, although there are many changes in the workplace these days, educating
people to carefully choose their career and to keep up to date with modern technology,
is the key to avoiding any major problems.

The diagram illustrates the process that is used to build an igloo from snow.
There are five main stages in this process, starting with finding an area covered by hard-
packed snow and culminating in covering the entrance hole with snow blocks.
As can be seen from the process, after a surface of hard-packed snow is found, a snow
saw is used to cut large blocks to the appropriate size to build the base. The edges of the
blocks are then smoothed with the saw and are placed in a circle, and a hole is dug under
the wall to make an entrance. Next, a slightly over-sized block is precisely shaped and
placed on the top of the igloo.
Out of the remaining steps, snow is shovelled onto the outside of the igloo and is packed
into all crevices while the internal surface of the igloo is smoothed by hand. Any excess
snow is also removed from the inside of the igloo. And finally, a hole is dug in the shape of
the entrance, and is then covered with snow blocks to complete the igloo.

Do you live in a house or an apartment?

I live in a flat on the 3rd floor of an old apartment building with my workmate. Though my
place is not well equipped with modern facilities, I still feel satisfied with my life here.
Actually, the apartment is located right in the central district, so it is quite convenient
for my daily commute.
What is your favorite room in your home? Why?

It would be my bedroom, for sure. It is a well-organized, relaxing and personal space of
my own where I can curl up with a good book and zone out.
Would you change anything about your home? Why/why not?

Well, I think I want to have some indoor plants in my bedroom. They will produce a
green light and a breath of fresh air in my room. Thanks to their air-purifying qualities,
I may get a good nights rest.
Would you like to move to a different home in the future?

Definitely. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m sharing a flat with my colleague. To be honest,
I’m a kind of person who finds happiness in silence, so I would love to live alone without
any disturbances.

How many hours do you sleep every day?

I have to admit that I am not sleeping much recently, just about 5 hours a day. I’m

schoolwork as well as the overwhelming workload at my workplace. And of course, this
does not allow me to have much time to sleep in a day.
Is it necessary to take a nap every day?

Absolutely. I think napping is a great way to recharge my batteries and refresh my mind.
For me, taking nap after long hours is like hitting the restart button in my brain.
Do old people sleep a lot? Why?

I don’t think so. Most of the elderly I know have to suffer from insomnia, which is a sleep
disorder that people may have when they reach an old age. Therefore, they can hardly
sleep at all.

Who gave you your name?

When it came to choosing my name, it was my dad who had the final word. Actually,

name as well.

Yeah, it does. My name means being dutiful towards parents. I think this name is very
popular in my country because there were always at least two people with the same
name as me in every class that I went to.
Do you have any special traditions about naming children?

I think in Vietnam, meanings of names are very important and are believed to determine
a child’s destiny. Therefore, most Vietnamese people will give a nice sounding and
meaningful name, reflecting the hope of a bright future for their child.

Today, I’ll take this chance to talk about Hoang, one of the smartest friends that I have
ever had. Back in high school, we used to hang out a lot until he went abroad for further
education.
Hoang was my classmate at high school and we got on quite well with each other as we
shared a big interest - music. However, when it came to studying, everything turned out
to be absolutely different. While I was doing really badly at Physics, he was considered
as the most quick-witted student in this subject at my school. He always stood first in
all of the exams and no other students could come close to him. Every time the teacher
asked us to solve a Physics question, it never cost him more than 3 minutes to do the
task. As he was quick on the uptake and understood the subject so well, Hoang was
always in teachers’ good books.
Not only did he perform well in Physics but he also did brilliantly at other science subjects
because of his intellectual ability. Besides, he was also a great companion during my
high school time. Thanks to his helpful guidance, I finally managed to get better grades
in Physics as well.
That is all I want to share.

Well I’m not quite sure, but scientifically speaking, if children are breastfed during their
first years, it is very likely that they will grow up more intelligent than those drinking
powdered milk. We all know a mother’s milk is highly nutritious for infants, so I guess
this is a wise choice.
What kind of job do you think requires workers to be very intelligent?

Personally, I would say being a doctor requires people to be incredibly intelligent.
You know, I really admire those who can bear in mind tons of medical theories and

prodigious memory are greatly necessary for this occupation.
Do you think artificial intelligence will take over humans in the future?

No I don’t think so. As we can see in sci-fi movies, there will be a day when AI gain control
over our civilization. I mean, basically, we can predict such an undesirable prospect so
we can totally prevent it from happening. I guess scientists are smart enough not to be
controlled by what they devised.
Does technology make our life become better or worse?

Well, there’re two sides to every coin. I think cutting edge technology provides human
beings with better living standards like modern air conditioners or eco-friendly solar
vehicles. Yet, we are also suffering its negative effects, such as our kids’ addictions to
social media or our over-reliance on smartphones.

Is it easy to teach old people to learn how to use modern technology?

Not quite. Most of the elderly have to face memory loss due to aging they may become
absent-minded and remember hardly any of the teaching. Also, teaching them to use

While some people consider films simply a source of entertainment, others suggest
that films should be educational. Personally, I believe that films can be either, or both,
entertaining and educational; however, it is up to each individual to choose what films
they like to watch and for what reasons they watch them.
These days, films and TV are extremely popular forms of entertainment. Almost every
household owns one or more televisions, and almost everybody loves to watch a certain
television program or type of film. After a long day at work or school, many people
simply want to come home and sit in front of the TV to relax and be entertained. They
may not have the energy or enthusiasm to sit and learn about something. Furthermore,
films and television programs are a part of the entertainment industry. The purpose of
this industry is for entertainment, and it is a multibillion-dollar industry that creates
jobs and generates a lot of money in many countries.(1)
On the other hand, films and TV programs can have very strong effects on the minds of
audiences and therefore people should be careful about how the content of the films
that they watch affect them and their families.(2) For example, many people’s morals
and values are shaped by what they watch on TV and in films. In addition, children
can learn about right and wrong through the cartoons they watch, while adults can
also learn many important lessons through watching films. For instance, watching a
film about war may cause people to have a strong sense of patriotism for their country
which could be seen as a positive educational effect.(3)
In conclusion, while educational films, such as documentaries, can also be entertaining,

and some films for entertainment can also have many educational aspects, I believe it is
not necessary that all films need to be educational.

The charts below show the performance of a bus company in terms of punctuality,
both actual and target (what actually happened compared to what the company was
trying to achieve), and the number of complaints and passengers.

The first chart shows the actual and target percentage of buses, from a particular bus
company, that arrived at the destination on time, between 1999 and 2003. Meanwhile,
the second chart shows how many complaints were made during the same period.
It is clear that while the expected target of buses arriving on time decreased over the
years, there was no clear pattern in the percentage of buses that actually arrived on time.
Additionally, the number of complaints from their passengers increased throughout the
period.
In 1999, the company’s target of buses arriving on time stood at 86%, which was 1%
higher than what was actually achieved. Although the target remained unchanged
one year later, the percentage of on-time arrivals dropped by nearly 3%. By 2003, this
company had reduced its target of on-time arrivals to just over 84%, while the actual
figure had witnessed considerable growth to about 85%.
Starting at approximately 7% of total passengers in 1999, the number of complaints

made by passengers rose significantly before experiencing a slight decline to just over
8% in 2001. This figure then grew considerably two years later, with about 12% of
passengers complaining in the last year.

Hometown
Where is your hometown?

My hometown is HCM City which is the largest financial and commercial center of
Vietnam. I have been living here for more than 20 years now.
What’s the most interesting part of your hometown?

Well, hundreds of things come to mind because I’m in love with everything here. But if
I have to pick one, food I guess. Living in a melting pot like HCM City means you have
the opportunity to get exposed to different culinary cultures coming from around the
world.
Would you say it is a good place to live? Why?

It depends. If you enjoy a fast-paced lifestyle, HCM city is a perfect choice for you. But
if all the noises and pollutions can make you feel annoyed, living here will be a torture.
What changes would you like to make to your hometown?

As I mentioned, HCM city is notorious for its all-day long noises and heavily polluted
air. So if I had a chance, I would build more open green spaces in central areas so that
residents would have places to relax.

Crowded places
What places do you think are often crowded?

Well, anywhere, from a hospital to even a post office can be extremely busy at any time
during the day. This could be because HCM city attracts thousands of people from many
parts of the country, and that’s why it is the most densely-populated city in Vietnam.
When was the last time you were in a crowded place?

It was only yesterday. My mom needed a new kettle so she had me visit the local
department store to get it. I thought it would be busy, but what I saw in there was
unexpected. There were an awful lot of people just standing around.
How do you feel when you are in crowded places?

Being in such busy places always makes me anxious as I can’t stand all those noises. My
mind tends to race and the first thing that comes to my head is how to get out of there
as soon as possible.

I think it’s understandable, especially for teenagers living in a crowded place like HCM
city. I mean, it’s not as easy as it sounds to keep a cool head when you encounter a
complicated situation.
Are you less or more patient when you’re angry?

As I said before, I used to be a hot-blooded boy when I was younger. At that time,
patience was not something on my list. Impatience took lots of great opportunities from
me, which I find quite regrettable.

I’m going to share with you a story about one of my friend’s successes that happened
3 years ago. After graduating from a small college located in the suburb of Dong

Do rich people or poor people often feel happier?

In many countries the world over, small shops in city centers cannot compete with large
stores that are based on the outskirts; therefore, many of those small businesses are
threatened with closure. This leads to a number of consequences, including a rise in car
usage in these countries and access to large out-of-town stores becoming limited for
those without cars.(1) In my view, this change does more harm than good.
Increasing bankruptcies among small town-center shops are an unfortunate situation

that puts local people to great inconvenience, with those who are not in possession
of a car standing most affected, because they now have to travel to a distant place to
shop.(2) The time used for such journeys could be better spent on other activities that are
of greater importance, be it work or entertainment. The situation’s impacts are also far
beyond individual levels. It causes a significant loss for the economy of any city where
large numbers of such businesses are forced to shut down. This may inflict unexpected
damage on the national economy as a whole.
The rise in car usage caused by people’s demand for long distance travel is also
problematic. Traffic congestion will become worse due to the higher number of vehicles
on streets. Furthermore, the quantity of pollutants emitted from car engines will rise,
which heightens pollution levels in those places and adversely affects human health.
However, this change in people’s shopping preference may encourage them to

move to out-of-town areas to live. Given the fact that modern cities are faced with
overpopulation and consequently ever-growing pressure on housing supply systems,
this could be considered a start of relieving such pressure.(3)
In conclusion, the trend towards shopping in large stores located away from city centers
is having many negative impacts. Although it could encourage some people to move to
places where these stores are established and help solving some population problems in
modern cities, I doubt that the trend could promise any significant outcome.

get a driving license, which are, an eyesight test, a written theoretical examination, and

centre, and fill out the appropriate forms. After that, an eyesight test is required. If the
applicant passes this test, he will carry on to the 2nd stage.

I was majoring in International Business Management when I was in university. After

Luckily, I got hired by KMTC, one of the leading firms in this industry.
Do you have a lot of friends where you are working?

Yes I do. I kinda get along well with everyone in my workplace. I was impressed by
their enthusiasm and profession in the first place. After that, I’ve realized that they all
understand me and willingly give me a hand when I am in need.
Is there anything you would like change in your workplace?

Well let me see. I think I love my company so much that I am satisfied with nearly
everything about it. Maybe it would be perfect if there are more plants inside the office
for more green space as well as decoration, like indoor tree pots put near the window
or on our desks, you know.

I’d like to tell you about my crush, who is probably the most handsome guy on earth that
I know. We used to study in the same high school, but now he is pursuing his medical

Back in my high school days, he was a total catch when every girl showed their affection
for him, and of course, I was not the exception. The thing which made me into him so
much was definitely his bright smile. Whenever my crush smiled, he always looked cuter,
more charming and more lovable. And it is no exaggeration to say that his genuine smile
could really lighten up my day. What’s more, the way he spoke in gentle tones with me
truly melt my heart. He seemed to have a good sense of style and was able to express
his individuality through everything he put on, from his shoes to his jacket. His clothes
were not expensive, I guess, but they looked perfectly appropriate for his body type.
Because of the long distance, I don’t get to see him face-to-face regularly. Actually,
we only meet once a year during the annual alumni reunion festival at my high school.
However, we still keep in touch with each other via Facebook Messenger. And I think
this is blessedly enough.

Developments in medical technology and health care systems, among many other factors,
are leading to people having longer life expectancy than before. As this trend continues,
in the future, we can expect the number of old people will be much greater than that of
young people. In several ways, society may benefit from a growing proportion of senior
citizens. However, I believe the rest of the world population would have to shoulder
much more responsibilities and the global economy would face a serious labor crisis.
On the positive side, an increase in the number of old people means a greater pool
of volunteers for community and government projects. These people are usually
more financially comfortable and therefore more willing to contribute free labor to
ameliorating their communities. For example, we often see old people in developed
countries engage in charity work to provide shelter and food for the homeless in their
neighborhoods. Such an act also instils a great sense of responsibility and altruism into
the young generation. This is, in fact, globally recognized to be advantageous in a world
where selfishness hinders one from taking action for the sake of others.
Nevertheless, aging populations will place the whole world under many pressures. Both
governments and businesses will have to pay for increased retirement pensions and
health care costs, which means tax-payers will have to bear a greater financial burden
and the young workforce will have to work harder and care for the elderly at the same
time.(1) Furthermore, lack of young labor workforce would cause stagnation for the
growth of individual businesses and the global economy as a whole because little
innovation may take place in this circumstance.(2) As a matter of fact, many first world
countries whose proportion of senior citizens is higher than that of young people, such
as Japan, are already experiencing these undesirable impacts.(3)
In conclusion, an aging population is beneficial in certain ways. However, the benefits

society may reap from an aging population cannot match the damage it inflicts. It is
important that the world governments should not underestimate the complexity of this
problem and take immediate action to reduce its future influences.

Where are you studying now?
I am currently studying in University of Finance and Marketing and majoring in
International Business administration. Well, I am a sophomore.
Why did you choose that school?

I didn’t actually choose it. You know, this school was actually one of the highly
recommended universities that my parents believe it would suit me most. That’s why
they told me to apply for it and I did.
What is your favorite subject at school?

I love attending soft skill classes which are compulsory subjects in the curriculum. These
skills, like public speaking or time management, are very fun and useful subjects and I
really love their practicability.
Is there anything you want to improve in your school?

Despite its modern facilities and beautifully designed buildings, my school really needs
to provide more green space for students on campus as well as in classrooms. You know,
more trees will provide more shade and cool air for us to study more efficiently.

How often do you buy shoes?

No I haven’t ever done that simply because I have a very negative view of online
shopping. I hate receiving a product that isn’t as good as advertised on those websites.
I prefer going to the store and check the quality before making a purchase.
Do you prefer comfortable shoes or good-looking shoes?

I prefer shoes that are more comfy and convenient. Because I have to go out very
frequently to see customers or friends, I need comfortable shoes that are soft and light
in order not to feel hurt after a long day.

Sky
Do you like to look at the sky at night?
Well just occasionally. I mean the sky is beautiful as long as it isn’t rainy or too sunny. Yet,
we are told not to gaze directly at the sun as it may cause great harm to our eyesight.
Do you prefer the sky in the morning or the sky at night?

At night, definitely; while the daytime sky is rather boring, the starry night sky, especially
that in the countryside, is so amazing that I was entranced by the first time I saw it many
years ago. That wasn’t like anything you can find in cities nowadays.
Can you see the moon and stars at night where you live?
Due to light pollution, the stars are too faint to be seen in Ho Chi Minh City, but we can
easily catch sight of the moon out there. Once a month, from here we can see the full
moon which is incredibly beautiful.

Part 2
Describe a kind of food people eat in a special occasion

• When you eat that meal
• How you prepare it
• What ingredients are used to prepare it
and explain why you enjoy it.
Because my mom is a super great cook, so since I was a child, I have had a privilege to
try lots of awesome dishes. So when it comes to Vietnamese food, there are hundreds
of choices coming to my mind. But the one I would talk about is Banh Chung, a
traditional food that most Vietnamese people eat during Tet holiday. According to the
Vietnamese culture, making Banh Chung is a way to express gratitude to our ancestors
and homeland.
Compared with cooking ordinary food, the process of making Banh Chung is much more
complicated and time-consuming as it requires lots of ingredients and skills. To make
Banh Chung, we need glutinous rice, pork meat, and green beans. First we have to
choose and soak sticky rice in water one night in advance. Rice is wrapped in square
shape, and the wrapping power must be neither tight nor loose. Then Banh Chung will
be boiled for about 12 hours. This is the most memorable part, as we tend to gather
around the fire, chatting and having snacks the whole night. No matter how modern the
world may become, having Banh Chung with beloved ones still plays an irreplaceable
role in the Vietnamese spiritual life during Tet holidays.

Well, it depends on which age group we are talking about. With millennials, eating rice every
day sounds like an evil torture as they love trying new things such as pizza or hamburgers
instead of sticking to just one type of food. Yet, with older people, especially ones preferring
traditional values, rice is an essential part of their daily diet so having it in every meal should
be fine.
Do people in your country like to eat food from plants or animals?

In the past Vietnamese people used to consume a massive amount of meat. However,

plants has become a more popular choice for the majority of Vietnamese people.
In your opinion, should people become vegetarians?

No, not at all. Although it’s always a good idea to eat vegetable every day, only eating
vegetable is a totally different story. I think having a rich spiritual life with various kinds of
food is as important as eating in a proper way.
Should we eat more for breakfast or lunch?

That’s not something I often think about, but maybe having a carefully prepared breakfast
is a wiser option. By doing so, we will have all the energy and nutrition required for a whole
day. Meanwhile, having a simple lunch sounds more reasonable for most of us due to our
hectic working schedule.

Is there any difference in the food that the rich and the poor eat?

example, while the rich have a proper breakfast, the underprivileged would just have some
bread and butter.
