Activity 5: PLASTIC BOTTLE CRAFT

Directions: Follow the steps on making the Plastic Bottle Craft below. Use the rubric
as your guide in making the artwork.
Materials:
 Plastic bottle
 Art materials (e.g. pair of scissors)
 Different colors of old and unused shirts

Steps on How to Make the Yarn

1. Lay your t-shirt out on a work surface. Cut a

horizontal line directly under the sleeves. Cut off
the hem (edge) on the bottom of the shirt. You
only need the middle section for this project.

9
2. Fold one side of the t-shirt towards to the other,
leaving a one inch space at the top.

3. Cut into strips (one inch thick) – do not cut the

space at the top.

4. Unfold the t-shirt so you can see the separate

strips. Following the photo, begin cutting the strips
diagonally across. Starting at the first strip, cut
diagonally across to the second strip. Repeat the
steps until the end of the shirt.

5. After getting a single strip of t-shirt yarn, pull it

through your hands to create the tube shape. This
enables the edges to curl. Keep pulling until it is
all tube-shaped. Do this with the other shirts.

Steps in Making the Plastic Bottle Craft

1. Cut the bottle into half or desired height as shown in picture 1A. Cut the sides of
the bottle to make strips as shown in picture 1B.

A B

1
2. Get your t-shirt yarn. Tie the end of the yarn to the first strip so that the yarn will
not move when weaving. Start weaving the yarn to the body of the bottle using over-
under technique as shown in picture 2A. Finish up to the top of the bottle as shown
in picture 2B.

A B

You can use different colors of t-shirt yarn to make your plastic bottle craft
more beautiful. Be creative and enjoy the activity.

This is the rubric for your Plastic Bottle Craft.
