Course Handout (Part II)

In addition to Part I (General Handout for all courses appended to the time table) this portion
gives further specific details regarding the course.

Course No.: PHY F312

Course Title: STATISTICAL MECHANICS
Instructor-in-charge: TOBY JOSEPH

Scope and objective of the course:

This is an introductory course to equilibrium statistical mechanics. The course will have 4 broad
topics that will be covered: Review of thermodynamics, classical statistical mechanics, quantum
statistical mechanics and elements of kinetic theory. The course intends to: (a) Develop the
methods of statistical mechanics, (b) connect the laws of thermodynamics to statistical laws
operating at the microscopic level and, (c) apply statistical mechanics to understanding the
properties of matter.

Text Book:
(T1) Statistical Mechanics (2nd edition), Kerson Huang, Wiley
(T2) Fundamentals of Statistical and Thermal Physics, F. Reif, Levant
