Experiment 3: UJT Relaxation Oscillator

Introduction:

Source: Experiments in Principles of Electronic Devices and Circuits (Lalond, David E)

In this experiment you will explore the operation of a UJT, then construct a
relaxation oscillator and observed and record circuit data.

Learning Objectives:

After successful completion of this experiment, students should be able to:

• Understand the basic operational characteristics of a UJT.

• Determine the output frequency of a UJT Relaxation oscillator.

Equipment and Materials:

***For this specific activity, the Multisim software will be utilized. Make sure that this
application is already installed in your PC or gadget. If not, find a way to have it installed.
• DC power supply
• Oscilloscope
• UJT, 2N2646 or equivalent
• Resistors
• Capacitors

Procedures:
1. Construct the circuit in the figure below. Component values will be based on your own
design of the circuit.

Source: Electronic Devices (Floyd)

2. Using the oscilloscope, measure the voltage at the emitter. Sketch the waveform and
determine the peak voltage.

3. Using again the oscilloscope, measure the voltage across R2. Sketch the waveform.

4. Repeat procedures 1,2, and 3, this time set the value of Resistor R1 and Capacitor C to a
higher value from the original value and connect the oscilloscope across the emitter.
Observe. Sketch the waveform.

5. From procedure 4, this time connect the oscilloscope across R2. Sketch the waveform.

Simulation Environment:

Questions to answer:

1. Calculate the period (T) of the output waveform using the formula T = R1 x C. Record
and complete the values in the table below.

2. What is the effect if the value of resistance R1 is increased to the output frequency
(fOSC)?
3. If the value of the capacitance (C1) is increased, what happens to the period (T)?
