What is Eclectic method? Why do teachers prefer Eclectic method as a way of teaching?
Definition of Eclectic Approach
In actuality, Harold Palmer and Henry Sweet developed the eclectic teaching approach for the first
time in 1920. The term "eclectic method" refers to the blending of many instructional approaches.
The aims of the course, the students' existing knowledge, and their ability levels all influence how
well an eclectic approach to language training blends a variety of strategies and methodologies.
Due to the nature of its combination, it is sometimes referred to as a mixed-method.

Eclectic Approach as Instructors’ Favorite Approach:

Most instructors choose the eclectic approach because of its versatility. In actuality, the eclectic
way of teaching incorporates all teaching philosophies, which is why teachers favor it over all
other teaching approaches. The main reason why foreign language instructors choose the eclectic
method is because it allows them to incorporate the most effective elements of all the well-known
language-teaching techniques into their lesson plans and use them for the purposes for which they
are most suitable. Additionally, an eclectic approach employs a variety of language-learning
activities, each of which may have unique characteristics and be motivated by opposing
assumptions.

Advantages and disadvantages:

Eclectic techniques are frequently employed since there are advantages and disadvantages to
employing a single theoretical perspective. The majority of teachers choose an eclectic method for
this reason as well, as it makes the material more applicable to the students' lives and gives them
the opportunity to connect with texts and speakers while also encouraging them to learn more
English. Additionally, the teachers' choice for the eclectic method is mostly due to the fact that
successful concepts, ideas, and principles from numerous schools of thought have been selected,
taken, and combined to create a comprehensive philosophy. Therefore, eclecticism is a way of life.
Simply put, eclecticism is the integration of knowledge from several sources.

Teachers prefer to use Eclectic Method:

Eclectic Method simplifies the presentation of language activities and helps teachers save a lot of
time and effort. Teachers and students will find it simpler to overcome any challenges posed by
the textbook materials. Eclectic approach is useful in a range of contexts, including fostering
greater respect among instructors and students for cross-cultural and multilingual classrooms,
allowing for fresh ideas and dynamic learning environments.
