COMPETENCY: VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT


I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
A. Identify figures of speech that show comparison (simile, metaphor, personification)
B. Identify the figure of speech used in a given poem.
C. Use figure of speech in their own writing.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:


Topic: Figures of Speech: Simile, Metaphor and Personification

Essential English Worktext in Literature and Language p. 79-83
Materials: Pictures, laptop, PowerPoint Presentation, visual aids and figures of speech
wall

III. PROCEDURE:

Preliminary Activities
-Prayer, greetings, checking of attendance

Review:
Ask the meaning of Literal and Figurative Language

Motivation:
Show the students two pictures, ask them the following questions:

 What can you see in the picture? Describe it.


 Which of the two photos are more attractive? Why?

A. ACTIVITY
Activity 1: UNLOCKING OF DIFFICULTIES
Match the phrases in Column A with its appropriate meaning in column B. Take
note of the underlined words

Discussion:
Figure of Speech-adds meaning and color to every minds of the reader to be
interested on a literary text they are reading, also awakens their imagination.
Simile- is a comparison of two unrelated objects with the use of as or like.
Metaphor-is a comparison of two unrelated objects without the use of as or like.
Personification- giving human traits to object or ideas.

B. ANALYSIS
Let the students read the poem below and ask the following questions.
 Did the poem use figures of speech?
 What figures of speech that can you find in the poem?

The Philippines is like a nest


On which beautiful flowers rest;
She is as full of love for me
As the wide wave-covered sea;
She is like a cherished madness for whom my thoughts are endless;
She is as self-possessed as a matron
Like an heiress of a great throne she rules a kingdom of volcanoes.
She wears a crown of stars wherever she goes.

C. ABSTRACTION
Fill in the missing word to complete the definition of the following figures of speech.

D. APPLICATION
Use the following words to make a sentence, the figures of speech will be given in
making a sentence and students who will answer will be given a card and they will write
their sentence on it and post it on the figures of speech wall. The sentences will be
check by the following

IV. EVALUATION
Identify figures of speech used in the following sentences. Choose your answer from the
words in the parenthesis. (SIMILE, METAPHOR, PERSONIFICATION). Write in a ¼
sheet of paper.

1. My heart is like an open highway


2. The angry clouds marched across the sky.
3. She is fast as a cheetah.
4. My cat is a bolt of lightning.
5. Life is a dream

V. ASSIGNMENT/AGREEMENT
Identify the type of figure of speech used in the phrases given below and use it in your
own sentences. Write it in your notebook.
