DISCUSSION
Parts of speech are the basic categories of words according to their function in a
sentence. It is acategory to which a word is assigned in accordance with
itssyntactic functions. English has eightmain parts of speech, namely, Nouns,
Pronouns, Adjectives, Verbs, Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions & Interjections.
In grammar, the parts of speech, also called lexical categories, grammatical
categories or word classes is a linguistic category of words. Eight parts of speech
among others :
1. Nouns
2. Pronouns
Pronouns as part of speech are the words which are used in place of nouns
like people, places, or things. They are used to avoid sounding unnatural by
reusing the same noun in a sentence multiple times. In the sentence, Maya saw
Sanjay, and she waved at him, the pronouns she and him take the place of Maya
and Sanjay, respectively. The other examples of pronouns are I, you, she, her, it,
5
everyone, somebody, hers, theirs, etc. Pronouns are classified into eight broad
categories as follows:
a. Personal Pronouns
b. Reflexive and Emphatic Pronouns
c. Demonstrative Pronouns
d. Indefinite Pronouns
e. Distributive Pronouns
f. Reciprocal Pronouns
g. Relative Pronouns
h. Interrogative Pronouns

An adverb is a word that is used to change or qualify the meaning of an
adjective, a verb, a clause, another adverb, or any other type of word or phrase
with the exception of determiners and adjectives that directly modify nouns. The
adverbs are broadly classified into nine types as follows:
Adverb of
a. Time
b. Place

d. Degree or Quantity
e. Frequency or Number
f. Reason
g. Focus and Viewpoint
h. Affirmation

phrases and sentences. By using conjunctions, we can make complex sentences
that show a connection between actions and ideas. Examples: and, but, so,
although, or, etc. There are three types of Conjunctions as follows:
8
a. Coordinating Conjunction
b. Correlative Conjunctions
c. Subordinating Conjunction
8. Interjections

"function" of the word in the sentence. There are several types of Parts of
speech, namely Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adverb, Adjective, Preposition,
