1. Which of the twelve elements of a positive culture were illustrated by the given
episodes vignettes? Which element was illustrated by describing opposite?
I think all the twelve elements are illustrated in the given episodes vignettes.
2. Is there any element left out? If there is can you as a group supply an episode of
vignette? A vignette is a short description of an episode in school like the 9 given
above.
A. School administrators and teachers don't share a common goal, they will work
toward their own agenda, which will eventually create conflict.
B. Principals who avoid difficult conversations with teachers and address issues by
reassigning the teacher or changing a teacher's schedule aren't truly serving
kids.
C. Programs that are planned are poorly implemented because the motivation and
commitment to change is weak or nonexistent.
D. Sometimes staff of the school are afraid to offer suggestions or new ideas for
fear of being attacked or criticized.
E. Some teachers blame the students for the lack of progress. Without really
thinking maybe their way of teaching is not effective.
F. A lack of funding typically leads to larger class sizes as well as less technology
and curriculum materials, and the more students a teacher has, the less
attention they can pay to individual students.
G. Some teachers are not open with the parents. They never let the parents know
what their children performance in school.
H. Teacher conflict involving co-teachers. It causes tension, increase stress and
decreases productivity.
I. Some teachers feel like their principal place too much emphasis on testing and
try to standardize teaching. Sometimes they doesn’t feel any support or never
heard any praise from the school head.
J. In terms of some school issues such as bullying some victims of it never get the
justice they deserve, because the school don’t have any action on this.
2. Are the following items good tips in building positive culture? Defend your
answer. If it is not so good tip, replace it with good one.
I think this is not a good tip especially if it’s just the first day of school. It’s much
better by having a discussion first with your students about how they learn best and
then state your rules accordingly.
b) If some students say they need a quite area to work in at times, they make a
sign like, “Quite Area, Brains at Work.”
This is a good tip in building a positive school culture because the students need to
have a focus especially when their studying.
c) “We talked about this yesterday. Did you forget?” You had this so well
yesterday. I know you can get it today.
It is not a good tip, if we said to the students like “we talked about this yesterday.
Did you forget?”is like laying blame on the student on why he fails on that task.
Instead a statement like, “You had this so well yesterday. I know you can get it
today” reminds the student of their past success. These are both subtle differences in
language that can make a big difference in your students perception of your faith in
their as learners.
d) Do you believe in your own ability to learn and grow?Do you believe it is your
obligation as a teacher to model learning and growing?
It is a good tip in building a positive school culture because it’s a very good reminder
to teachers of what really there purpose on why they become a teacher.
I think it’s not a good tip but it depends on the situation. If the student needs
improvement on his/her drawing it’s not wrong if the teacher will tell the truth.Be
honest in your feedback. Good feedback tells the learner what they did correctly,
where they may have missed the mark, and what specifically they need to do next.
f) Come up with a Question and Answer Wall. Here students post the academic
question they want answered within the month with their name on it.
Anybody can give an answer with his/her name written.
I think it’s a good tip in building a positive school culture, because it will made the
students feel important, that they will know that their opinion matters. And if they
have some concerns and queries regarding the school they will be able to get the
answers that they needed.
C. Set consistent discipline. When rules are not followed, discipline must be
administered. However, broadening the range of discipline methods can help
encourage a positive school culture.Instead of constantly putting out fires,
trying a more proactive approach to discipline. By giving him a task that helps
correct the wrong, teaches him what he should have done instead.
Let’s Reflect
I learned that School culture is the beliefs, perceptions, attitudes, and written and
unwritten rules that influence every aspect of a school
I realized that improved school culture contributes to greater school success. Broadly
speaking, when school culture is strong, teachers and students have a greater incentive
to strive for their maximum potential. This is because their satisfaction, morale, and
fulfillment all grow as school culture blossoms.
I was pleased that with the encouragement provided by a healthy school, teachers
are more likely to prioritize their professional development and aptitude by
improving their skills, expanding their base of knowledge, and connecting with their
students. Motivated teachers are more apt to tailor their approaches to students’
individualized learning needs, better prepared to guide their students toward
excellence, and more willing to praise their students for a job well-done.
I was not aware of the difference between the school culture and school climate.
