III.Program Description:
Sarangani Big Brother (SBB): Reading is fun is a program initiated by CLAFI to support Deped to help
eliminate non-readers in the Division of Sarangani. It is conducted during summer time for a range of 15
days.
IV. Rationale
Reading is a written communication that strongly correlates with reading and success. A good
reader is likelier to do better in school and pass the examinations than a weak reader pupil. Readers who
can understand the individual sentence, as well as the organizational structure in single writing or piece of
written composition, are described as good readers.
The quality of education acquired by the pupil depends largely upon the pupils’ knowing how to
read and interpret printed materials adequately, and without such abilities, they are barred practically from
learning effectively and meaningfully to the other subjects in the curriculum.
Summer Big Brother: Reading is fun is an education-centered program initiated by the Conrado
& Ladislawa Alcantara Foundation (CLAFI) to support the Department of Education – Sarangani Division.
This concept envisions to help eliminate the total number of identified frustration readers and equip them
with new strategies and styles in showing love for reading by making it an essential skill in their battle of
study.
The program inculcates the value of volunteerism by calling out big brothers and big sisters that
would help our teacher facilitator in teaching our young learners. Through these volunteers, pupils may
feel a different ambiance because they are taught directly by teachers. CLAFI conducts prior training for our
teachers and volunteers regarding different teaching strategies and skills so as to make learning fun.
V. ACCOMPLISHMENTS/ IMPACT
 Developed the spirit of volunteerism among the youth within the community.
 Increased and maintained the attendance of identified frustration learners.
 Help prepare frustration and non-readers for the next school opening
 Developed the love of reading among young learners
 Increased community/stakeholders participation in school activities

VI. SUSTAINABILITY:
This kind of program SARANGANI BIG BROTHER (SBB) should be given high regard as this is part of the Mission and Vision of
the Department of Education that is to give every Filipino learner equal access on quality education. Despite of the global crisis in which
all sectors in the community are affected even the mode of delivery of the lesson is being affected education must continue to serve
every Filipino learner. Hence, with this program initiative by CLAFI , San Felipe Central Elementary School’s overall reading level was
boosted.
This program aims to make learning is fun thus it should be strengthened by tapping support from the LGU by having a
campaign drive to donate materials to be used in making instructional materials specifically the SK should also be tap to yield support to
this endeavor. Lastly, in order to sustain the program it should undergo thorough review of the objectives and other parts of its
implementation to give assessment and enhancement of the program.
