SECTION 21 05 00 – FIRE SUPPRESSION SCOPE OF WORKS

PART 1 | SCOPE OF WORKS

1.1. INTRODUCTION

A. This Specification relates to the Fire Suppression Services associated with


the Villa (G+1+R+SB+GARAGE) project, Al Khwaneej, DXB

B. The following specification sections refer to Local UAE Civil Defence


Code of Practice and International Standards (NFPA and EN). The
contractor is to refer and comply with all such standards in the supply,
installation and commissioning of all systems and provide a fully
compliant bid accordingly.

1.2. GENERAL

A. WORK INCLUDED

1. The Fire Suppression Services Specification shall comprise the systems


described within the specification and as shown on the drawings. The
Contractor shall include for the supply, delivery to site, erection,
connection of all equipment and ancillaries to form a complete and
Fit for Purpose installation. This shall include all testing, commissioning,
operating and maintenance manuals, as fitted record information
and drawings, staff instructions and handover to the Employer.

2. The Contractor shall include for specialist equipment and systems to


be detailed designed and commissioned by relevant specialist
suppliers. In addition, this Contract will include for installation of cast in-
situ sleeves and builders work within the concrete structure of the
building.

3. This outline of the requirements shall be read in conjunction with all


accompanying drawings.

4. This section of the specification details the work applicable to this


particular project. The minimum standard of materials, systems and
acceptable installation is stated in the accompanying sections
referred to herein as the Mechanical Services Standard Specification.

5. The Contractor shall carry out the works as described herein and as

shown on the Contract drawings.

6. This specification covers the provision and installation of all the Fire
Suppression services for the project, including supervision of the
mechanical works.

7. The Contractor shall include for the whole of the work involved and
the supply of materials necessary for the satisfactory completion of the
Fire Suppression installation, as set down in this specification, schedules
of accompanying drawings and for the supply, delivery to site,
offloading, storing, protecting, taking out of store, putting into position,
installation, fixing, including any fixings brackets, plinths and builders
work for items of Fire Suppression equipment, inspecting, testing,
attendance on other trades, commissioning of the system and
removal from the site of waste material, described in detail herein, and
as specified on the accompanying drawings.

8. The positions of equipment, fittings, accessories etc., on the drawings


are approximate. Final positions shall be established during the
Engineers review of the Contractors working drawings.

1.3. STANDARD OF WORK

A. The Contractor shall employ suitably qualified tradesman to install the


mechanical services to the highest standard. The minimum standard for
each service is laid down within this document.

B. All workmanship shall be strictly in accordance with the standards


referred to in each particular Division 21 specification sections

C. The Contractor shall ensure that items forming part of the mechanical
services installation are installed to the manufacturer’s
recommendations, relevant local authority regulations, American and

NFPA recommendations.

D. All local Dubai utility and government departments including


Environmental, planning, aviation, public health, etc.

E. Dubai Civil Defence (DCD) requirements.

A. Refer to the main Contract documentation for restrictions on working


times, noisy operations and access for details of phasing. The Contractor
shall make due allowance in his Tender for these requirements.

B. Ensure that all notices are adhered to with respect to down time or
disruption to existing services and provide all necessary temporary
works to ensure that operational areas continue to function normally.

C. Read this part of the specification in conjunction with the rest of the
specification and all associated documents and drawings.

D. The Contractor shall design where requested, supply, install, test and
commission the mechanical services, as outlined within this Specification
unless otherwise stated.

1.5. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A. The Villa (Ground Floor, First Floor, Roof Floor, Service Block, Covered
Garage)

1.6. OPERATING CONDITIONS

A. The ambient conditions in Dubai are as follows: -

1. Cooling: 46oC DB, 29oC WB at mean coincident wet bulb

2. It is a requirement that all equipment apparatus, materials and


machines installed externally and in unconditioned spaces to be
suitably rated for continuous operation at not less than 52oC db.

B. Precautions should also be taken to ensure the saline content in both


the ambient air and ground does not have any adverse effect on the
general operation of the plant, equipment or materials used on the
project. No claims will be accepted where material enhancement is
required to satisfy this clause to the Engineers satisfaction.

1.8. COORDINATION

A. The Contractor is expected to provide coordinated construction


drawings for approval and as such these drawings shall be coordinated
with the latest architectural, interior design & structural drawings as will
be issued to the contractor.

PART 2 | BASIS OF DESIGN

2.1. FIRE SUPPRESSION SERVICES GENERAL

A. The Contractor shall complete all installation work in strict accordance


with all rules, regulations, by-laws and requirements of all authorities
having jurisdiction. The design shall follow recognized best practices
defined within UAE Fire and Life Safety Code of Practice and NFPA. The
most stringent requirements from referenced specifications and
standards will apply.

B. The scope of work shall comprise but not be limited to the following:

and anchors

4. Pipe work and support painting

5. Supervised valves and coordination of connection to FAS

C. All materials and equipment shall be new, clean and free from
corrosion.

2.2. DESIGN CODES

A. The latest version of following references, codes and standards will be


utilised in the development of the design for the Mechanical, Electrical,
Plumbing and Drainage Engineering Services.

2.3. DESIGN CRITERIA

The contractor is to ensure that the maximum load bearing weight (live
and static weights) of the structural slab, roadways, etc. is taken into
consideration when transporting, installing, etc. all MEP systems and
ancillary supporting equipment.

The following design criteria has been used for the design of the
Mechanical, Plumbing and Drainage Engineering Services.

2.4. FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEMS

A. The Contractor shall employ the services of an approved fire


engineering specialist to design, supply, install, test and commission the
complete firefighting installation. The design philosophy reflects the
requirements of applicable NFPA standards and hazard classifications.
(NFPA stipulated requirement)

2.5. DESIGN AND INSTALLATION STANDARDS

A. The fire suppression system shall be a fully hydraulically calculated


system and fully supervised by the building fire alarm system, which shall
comply with the requirements of the appropriate NFPA

standards and local Civil Defence requirements.

2.6. FIRE DEPARTMENT CONNECTIONS

A. A Fire Department connection for the use of the local Civil Defence shall
be provided for the private fire services mains.

B. The connection shall be located at the front of the building where the
agreed fire appliance firefighting location has been identified by the
Fire Consultant. At the location shown the breaching connection shall
be used for tank filling with the remaining connection utilised for
charging the fire main.

C. 2 No. breeching inlets shall be provided as detailed on the tender


drawings.

2.7. STANDPIPE SYSTEM

A. The stand pipe system shall be a dry standpipe system.

B. The system shall be a Class I system providing 65mm hose valves with
hose connections.

C. All standpipes shall be located as shown on drawings. provide system


fault indications when the control valves are moved from their normally
open or closed positions.

2.8. FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

A. The Contractor shall provide all fire extinguishers. The installation shall
comply with the requirements of the standard specification.

B. Fire extinguishers shall be provided, but not limited to, the following
areas:

1. ELV rooms - Clean Agent

C. Fire extinguishers shall comply with NBC and NFPA 10 for listing and
labelling.

D. The distribution of fire extinguishers shall comply with the prescribed


requirements of NBD and NFPA 10, the specific requirements of the local
Civil Defence. Carbon dioxide extinguishers shall be 5kg.

E. Dry chemical/multipurpose shall be 5kg type ABC.

F. The Contractor shall submit materials samples for approval, including


finished cabinets of all types including completed lettering all plant and
equipment areas containing electrical services shall be provided with
carbon dioxide extinguishers. The Contractor is responsible for reviewing
the drawings and assessing the fire extinguisher requirements.

2.9. SEISMIC CONSIDERATIONS

A. All Fire Protection systems will be installed in accordance with the seismic
zone classification of Dubai which is UBC Zone 2B.

B. All life safety fire protection systems will be installed on seismically rated
supports with necessary support cross bracing to ensure these systems
will not be damaged in a seismic event.

C. All life safety fire protection systems will be designed and installed with
seismic considerations relevant to the acceleration rates and forces
imposed on the life safety fire protection systems during a zone 2b
seismic event to reduce the risk that the life safety fire protection systems
will be damaged by a seismic event.

D. Refer to specification section 230548 - Vibration and Seismic Controls for


HVAC, for details on the required contractors design scope, material /
products, submittals, etc.

2.10. COMMISSIONING

A. The Contractor shall appoint a specialist commissioning company.

B. The Contractor shall carry out testing, commissioning proving and


demonstration of all mechanical and associated electrical systems
including full cause and effect testing and demonstrations of firefighting
systems.

C. The Contractor shall undertake all commissioning works in strict


accordance with the requirements of the standard specification and
demonstrate their full compliance to the Engineer and the appointed

commissioning representatives.

2.11. TRAINING OF EMPLOYERS STAFF

A. The Contractor shall include for onsite and class training of the
employers Engineering and maintenance staff on the complete
mechanical and electrical Engineering systems including associated
cause and effect on all systems. The Contractor shall submit his
proposed training procedures with his Tender offer including all
necessary attendance of specialist commissioning Engineers and
specialist suppliers.

B. The Contractor shall provide the services of a skilled technician(s) for a


minimum of two consecutive of each system provided to the full
satisfaction of the Employer or his representative. In addition, The
Contractor shall provide:

1. Specialised instructions by the representative manufacturers as


described under the appropriate clauses of this specification.

2. Arrange with the Employer the most suitable time for instructions to
their operating and maintenance personnel.

3. Keep a record of dates and durations of each instruction period


together with the name(s) of person(s) to whom the instructions were
given.

4. Submit one signed copy of such record.

2.12. FABRICATION GENERALLY

A. Grades of metals, section dimensions and properties to be to the

appropriate EN Standard. When not specified, select grades and


sections appropriate for the purpose.

B. Unless specified otherwise, fastenings to be of the same metal as the


component, with matching coating or finish.

C. Do not permit contact between dissimilar metals in components which


are to be fixed where moisture may be present or occur.

D. Finished components to be rigid and free from distortion, cracks, burrs


and sharp arises. Moving parts must move freely and without binding.

2.13. WELDING/BRAZING GENERALLY

A. Thoroughly clean surfaces to be joined. Ensure accurate fit using clamps


and jigs where practical. Use tack welds only for temporary attachment.

B. Make joints with parent and filter metal fully bonded throughout with no
inclusions, holes porosity or cracks.

C. Prevent weld spatter falling on surfaces of materials which will be self-


finished and visible in completed work. Remove all traces of flux residue,
slag and weld spatter.

2.14. WELDING OF STEEL

A. Metal arc welding to EN 1011 or other methods subject to approval by


the Engineer.

2.15. FINISHING WELDED/BRAZED JOINTS

A. Butt joints which will be visible in completed work to be smooth, flush with
adjacent surfaces.

B. Fillet joints which will be visible in completed work to be executed neatly.


Grind smooth where specified.

2.16. APPLYING COATINGS

A. Apply after fabrication is complete and all fixing holes have been drilled
unless otherwise specified. Before applying coating remove all paint,
grease, flux, rust, burrs and sharp arises. Make good all defects which
would show after application of coating and finish surfaces smooth.

2.17. MATERIALS GENERALLY

A. Grades of metals, section dimensions and properties to be to the


appropriate EN Standard. When not specified, select grades and
sections appropriate for the purpose.

B. Prefinished metal may be used if methods of fabrication do not damage


or alter appearance of finish and finish is adequately protected.

C. Fastenings to be to the appropriate EN Standard and, unless specified


otherwise, to be of the same metal as the component, with matching
coating or finish.

2.18. WARRANTEES/GUARANTEES

A. The contractor will be liable for all systems and equipment for a period
of 1 year from TOC (i.e. the Defects and Liability Period, DLP).

B. In addition to the DLP, the Contractor will provide at least a 2-year


warranty for each installed system and associated plant, or devices
(unless a further extended warrantee is requested in the table below or
a longer warranty requested in the individual specification section). The
warrantee will start on the 1st day of receiving a Client signed copy of
the TOC (Taking Over Certificate); the warrantee will allow full cover of
the system repairs or replacement in its entirety.

C. The Contractor will provide maintenance and parts replacement to all


of the following systems for the durations listed.

1.3. REFERENCE STANDARDS

A. All firefighting installations and equipment shall fully comply with UAE Fire
and life Safety Code of Practice - 2011 and the latest NFPA standards
relative to the system component or installation. The more stringent
requirement between UAE Fire and Life Safety Code and the relevant
NFPA codes will always apply.

B. The following are reference standards that form part of this specification
(latest edition). Associated regulations and guidelines should be
incorporated into the requirements for the installations

1.4. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. The Contractor is responsible to provide a comprehensive and


integrated fire protection installation to serve the project, occupants
and contents in accordance with all Section 21 specification
requirements and in accordance with NFPA and local requirements.

B. The scope of work shall include, but not be limited to the following:

1. Supply, install, test and commission all fire protection piping, etc. to
make a complete installation as indicated on the drawings.

2. It is the responsibility of the Contractor to make a detailed review of all


drawings during the tender period, in order to fully comprehend the
extent of the work to be completed. These drawings are schematic in
nature and show the intent for the minimum requirements of the fire
protection systems. Obstructions to pipe routing and obstructions not

shown on these drawings. It is the Contractor’s responsibility to locate


and detail these obstructions as part of the scope of work. In addition,
it is the Contractor’s responsibility to acquaint himself of all the
drawings from the other disciplines – structural and architectural,
during the tender phase, so that all of the interferences can be
appreciated at the time of tender. No extras will be given for
conditions that were known at the time of tender.

3. This Contractor shall allow a min. of 3 weeks for the return of reviewed
shop drawings.

4. Coordinate the installations with all other trades in order to maximize


the head room in all cases.

5. Coordinate all interface requirements with fire alarm supplier to ensure


all of the following are correctly connected to and monitored by the
fire alarm system in an alarm condition:

a. Supervised valves b. Flow switches

b. Clean Agent extinguishing systems

C. The switchboards and controls will be suitable for operation in a non-air-


conditioned humid environment.

D. The Fire Protection System shall be in accordance with the requirements,


regulations and By-laws of authorities having jurisdiction, NFPA and the
requirements of Associated Factory Mutual Fire Insurance Companies.

E. All installations shall be installed and tested in accordance with the best
International Standards and Codes of Practice specifically with the
current issue of NFPA standards and the requirements of the local Civil
defence.

F. Materials construction and installation methods of all piping, fittings and


valves shall conform to the current acceptable standards of the
authorities having jurisdiction. All components used shall be UL listed
and/or FM approved.

G. The Contractor shall be responsible to provide all calculations and


materials required for necessary for vibration and movement control

related to the systems. This shall include all necessary devices to


manage vibration, thermal and seismic movement and anchoring
requirements for the whole installation.

H. The whole installation shall be undertake by a specialist fire protection


company who are approved by the local civil defence. This company
shall be responsible for ensuring the final installation fully meets with the
requirements of local codes, NFPA requirements and project
specifications. The installations must also comply with the requirements
of the fire strategy design for the building and any stipulations made by
civil defence during the approvals process.

I. The Contractor is responsible for all final co-ordination. This shall include
the assessment of any thermal insulation required to protect the system
from damage or operational risk as a result of excessive heat or cold
within the area served. Thermal insulation shall be provided where
pipework or equipment is exposed to these risks. This may also include
trace heating in extreme conditions.

1.5. SUBMITTALS

A. The following shall be submitted for review within 21 days of award and
prior to delivery of materials:

1. Material and equipment information shall include manufacturer’s


catalogue cut sheet and technical data for each component or
device used in the system. This shall include, but not be limited to, the
following:

a. Control panel and controls

b. Agent storage cylinders

c. Breeching Inlets

d. Pipework, Valves and Fittings

e. Fire Extinguishing equipment

f. Piping isometrics

g. Flow calculations

B. Provide information outlining the warranty of each component or


device used in the systems.

C. Provide information outlining the operation and maintenance


procedures that will be required of the Client. This information shall
explain any special knowledge or tools the Client will be required to
employ and all spare parts that should be readily available.

1.6. QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Contractor’s Quality Control Responsibilities: The Contractor is solely


responsible for quality control of the Work.

B. Regulatory Requirements: Comply with applicable requirements of the


laws, codes, ordinances and regulations of the authorities having
jurisdiction. Obtain necessary approvals from all such authorities.

1.7. DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. General: Deliver and store materials in manufacturer’s original


packaging labeled to show name, brand, type, and grade. Store
materials in protected dry location off ground in accordance with
manufacturer’s instructions. Do not open packaging nor remove labels
until time for installation.

1.8. PROJECT / SITE CONDITIONS

A. Weather Conditions: Do not proceed with the Work during inclement


weather nor when weather forecasts are unfavourable, unless the Work
will proceed in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements and
instructions.

1.9. WARRANTY

A. This warranty shall further provide that in the event of the failure of any
system or its component equipment items or the improper functioning
thereof, during the period of the warranty, the Contractor shall have
available and "on call", within eight hours or less, competent service
personnel for the restoration of all systems and equipment for complete
operation. Should the nature of the failure be such as to present an
emergency in the opinion of the Client, such personnel shall be promptly

available. Regardless of the hour of the day of the week, should the
failure be such as to fall under this warranty, the cost of the services shall
be borne by the Contractor.

B. If service personnel are not promptly available "on call" within eight
hours or less, the Client may employ such personnel as are available to
him, at the expense of the Contractor.

PART 2 | PRODUCTS

2.1. GENERAL

A. Refer to other Division 21 sections for products descriptions and


requirements

B. Provide all labour, materials, products, equipment and services to supply


and install the complete fire suppression systems as indicated on the
drawings and specified in these specifications, to provide a complete
and operational installation.

C. The Contractor shall be experienced in the design and installation of fire


protection systems to NFPA standards, and shall be an approved
company by the local Civil defence

D. Mentioned herein or indicated on the drawings, of articles, products


operations or methods, requires that the Contractor provide each item
mentioned or indicated, of quality or subject to qualifications stated,
each operation prescribed and provide therefore all labour, products,
equipment and services to complete the fire protection systems.

E. Shop Drawings shall give hydraulic reference points to be designated


by letter or number and to correspond to the comparable reference
points shown on the hydraulic calculation sheets.

F. Shop Drawings shall show type and location of hangers, pipe sizes and
location, details of alarm valve and trim, control valves, and all
additional information required for approval by the Authorities and
Factory Mutual.

G. Submit calculations of hydraulically designed systems on form sheets,


including summary sheet, detailed work sheet and graph sheet.

H. Submit six (6) copies of shop drawings and hydraulic calculations which
shall bear the stamp of a fire protection professional Engineer.

2.2. STAND PIPE SYSTEM DESIGN

A. The dry standpipe system shall be Class 1. Hydraulic calculations and


shall conform to NFPA-13 and NFPA-14, latest edition and to the
requirements specified herein and to the local Civil defence.

B. Friction losses in pipe shall be calculated in accordance with the Hazen


and Williams formula with 'C' value of 120 for above ground steel pipe
and 100 for underground pipe.

C. Hydraulic calculation requirements: The velocity in overhead piping and


fittings shall not exceed 3 meters per second. This includes riser nipples.
Velocity in cross mains shall not exceed 3.8 meters per second. The
velocity in the immediate area of the sprinkler system alarm check valve
shall not exceed 4 meters per second. Velocities shall be shown on
calculations.

D. Hydraulic calculation shall include and identify the pressure drop from
the water tank to the pump and through the loop main to the risers, in
addition to the overhead piping.

2.3. STRESS ANALYSIS

A. Pipework systems including main riser systems and main horizontal


distribution pipework will be subject to stress analysis in accordance with
the stress limitations prescribed in ASME B31.9 ‘Building Services Piping’
for pipework operating at less than 24 bar and ASME B31.3 ‘Process
Piping’ for any pipework operating at greater than or equal to 24 bar.

B. All stress analysis will take into account but not be limited to the
following:

1. Pipe wet weights

2. Pressure thrust

3. Surge pressures

4. Expansion and contraction (including creep + shrinkage)

5. Seismic acceleration factors relevant to building location seismic zone


classification

C. Stress Analysis will be carried out by 3rd party Stress Analysis specialist
employed by the Contractor. The appointment of the Stress Analysis
specialist will be subject to client approval based on the submission of
documentation indicating the proposed specialists experience in this
field.

D. The results of the Stress Analysis will be used to detail main risers and
horizontal distribution pipe work systems with regard to final pipe
routing, material selection and the location and sizing of supports,
guides and anchors all in relation to selected expansion/contraction
and pipework movement compensation devices.

E. A Structural Engineer will be appointed by the Contractor to detail main


supports, anchors and fixings to building structure based on the Stress
Analysis results.

F. All Stress Analysis reports and results, including structural calculations, for
pipework system materials, supports, guides and anchors shall be
submitted for approval.

PART 3 | EXECUTION

3.1. EXAMINATION

A. The Contractor shall ensure all products are inspected prior to


installation and shall also allow the engineer full access to the
equipment throughout duration of the works

3.2. PREPARATION

A. The Contractor shall ensure that all plant, materials and site conditions
are as required to ensure the works can be undertaken in accordance
with the design intent.

3.3. INSTALLATION

A. The Contractor shall be responsible to co-ordinate his work with all other
Trades and shall be completely familiar with and shall make allowance

for conditions which effect the sprinkler installation.

B. The installation of the fire protection systems shall be carried out with due
regard for the space limitations of the building and for the space
requirements of other Trades.

3.4. PROTECTION

A. The Contractor shall ensure all equipment is protected from damage


from delivery to handover, providing all necessary materials and
supervision.

3.5. TESTING

A. Refer to detailed testing and commissioning requirements for all Division


21 components.

B. The complete fire protection system should be fully tested and


commissioned in accordance with NFPA recommendations and
in particular NFPA 25 for water-based systems

C. The Contractor shall provide a detailed commissioning programme and


method statements particular to all fire protection systems.

D. Inspection shall be performed in the presence of the Client’s


representative.

3.6. DEMONSTRATION

A. The Contractor shall provide the Client demonstration of all the


components of the system

3.7. CLIENT TRAINING

A. Prior to final acceptance, the Contractor shall provide operational


training in all concepts of the system to the Client’s key personnel.

B. Full Documentation shall be provided with the training manual

1. As-built drawings shall be provided by the Contractor indicating the


installation details. All routing of piping, electrical conduit and
accessories shall be noted.

2. Equipment installation and maintenance manuals shall be provided in

1.3. REFERENCE STANDARDS

A. All firefighting installations and equipment shall fully comply with UAE Fire
and life Safety Code of Practice - 2011 and the latest NFPA standards
relative to the system component or installation. The more stringent
requirement between UAE Fire and Life Safety Code and the relevant
NFPA codes will always apply.

1.4. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. To provide hangers and/or supports such that all Fire equipment which
is independently supported directly from the structure of the building or

load bearing earth through the appropriate support systems and


acoustic/vibration proof systems such that each item of Fire equipment
has no effect on any other item of Fire equipment what so ever.

B. As a minimum all hangers and/or supports shall be to standard


recommended by the manufacture of the item of Fire equipment being
supported/hung. If a more different hanging and/or support system
requirement is specified / required by regulation or described by
another part of this specification then the most onerous requirements of
each regulation and/or specification shall be met.

C. All hangers & or supports shall be of appropriate Fire rating to match the
Fire rating of that items of Fire equipment.

(For example: If a duct has a one-hour 300C Fire rating the hanger
and/or support system for that duct shall have a rating which will
maintain that duct in position and allow it to operate for the same
period in the same Fire condition.)

D. Seismic supports will be provided as necessary in accordance with the


requirements of the seismic zone classification of Dubai which is UBC
Zone 2b. Seismic supports will be sized and selected by a specialist
supplier in this field: Mason Industries, Kinetics or approved equivalent.

1.5. SUBMITTALS

A. Calculations

B. Product Data: The following shall be submitted for all hangers and/or
supports in accordance with paragraph entitled, "General
Requirements," of this section.

1. Equipment and Performance Data include certified performance and


rated capacities; shipping, installed, and operating weights; furnished
specialties; final dimensions; and accessories for each type of product
indicated.

2. Equipment fixing Data

C. Typical shop drawing details shall be submitted in accordance with Part

3, "Execution," of this section for each support system used.

D. Design Data: Design Analysis and Calculations shall be submitted for all
hangers and/or supports in accordance with paragraph entitled,

E. Maintenance Data: For all hangers and/or supports to include in


maintenance manuals.

1.6. QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Comply with the following requirements:

1. Low-emitting materials, adhesives and sealants

B. UL Compliance: Fabricate and label all hangers and/or supports to


comply with appropriate UL listing.

C. Product Options: Drawings indicate size, profiles, connections, and


dimensional requirements of all hangers and/or supports and are based
on the specific types and models selected. Other manufacturers' all
hangers and/or supports with equal performance characteristics may
be considered.

D. Materials and equipment shall be standard products of a manufacturer


regularly engaged in the manufacturing of such products. The standard
products shall have been in satisfactory commercial or industrial use for
5 years prior to bid opening. The 5-year use shall include applications of
equipment and materials under similar circumstances and of similar size.
The 5 years’ experience shall be satisfactorily completed by a product
that has been sold or is offered for sale on the commercial market
through advertisements, manufacturer's catalogues, or brochures.

1. Products having less than a 5-year field service record shall be


acceptable if a certified record of satisfactory field operation, for not
less than 6000 hours exclusive of the manufacturer's factory tests, can
be shown.

2. Products shall be supported by a service organization.

3. System components shall be environmentally suitable for the indicated

1.7. DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Manufacturer's Preparation for Shipping:

1. To manufacturer’s recommendations.

B. Store in dry location.

C. Retain protective covers during storage.

D. Protect against damage from sand, grit, and other foreign matter.

E. Comply with manufacturer's written handling instructions.

1.8. WARRANTY

A. The warranty shall include, inspection, removal, materials, Labour,


installation, on site repairs, commissioning and (if required) replacement.

B. Should the Contractor not follow the manufactures recommendations


or in any other way invalidate any Manufactures warranty the
Contractor shall replace the affected items such that the warranty is
reinstated.

PART 2 | PRODUCTS

2.1. GENERAL:

A. Acceptable pipe hanger suppliers - see approved list of manufacturers.

B. Adjustable clevis type pipe hangers shall be galvanized steel.

2.2. HANGERS AND SUPPORTS

A. Pipe Hangers, Supports, and Components shall be MSS SP-58, factory-


fabricated components.

1. Galvanized, Metallic Coatings: For piping and equipment that will not
have field -applied finish.

2. Non-metallic Coatings: On attachments for electrolytic protection


where attachments are in direct contact with copper tubing.

B. Channel Support Systems: MFMA-2, factory-fabricated components for

1. Material for Cold Piping: Water-repellent-treated, ASTM C 533, Type I


calcium silicate with vapour barrier.

2. Material for Hot Piping: Water-repellent-treated, ASTM C 533, Type I


calcium silicate.

3. For Trapeze or Clamped System: Insert and shield cover entire


circumference of pipe.

4. For Clevis or Band Hanger: Insert and shield cover lower 180 degrees
of pipe.

5. Insert Length: Extend 50 mm beyond sheet metal shield for piping


operating below ambient air temperature.

PART 3 | EXECUTION

3.1. EXAMINATION

A. Examine equipment anchors, builders work and support locations for


compliance with requirements for installation.

B. Examine access for maintenance and operation for adequate working


space.

C. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been


corrected.

3.2. PREPARATION

A. Not applicable

3.3. INSTALLATION

A. Provide a hanger within 600mm on each side of a valve, elbow or tee


on all piped system. Where the building structure will not accept the

weight of pipe, insulation and contents, at maximum span shown, the


Contractor shall reduce the hanger spacing as required by the
Engineer.

B. For Fire pipes use a galvanized steel insulation protection shield between
the insulation and the hanger. The shield width shall be minimum 1/4 of
the pipe circumference. The length and gauge shall be as follows:

1. 300mm long and 18 US ga for pipes up to 75mm Ø

2. 600mm long and 16 US ga for pipes 100mm to 150mm Ø

3. 600mm long and 14 US ga for pipes 200mm to 300mm Ø

4. 600mm long and 12 US ga for pipes larger than 300mm Ø

C. Refer to Insulation Specification for insulation between pipe and pipe


hanger.

D. Unless otherwise specified or shown, all pipes installed on roof or


supported from below shall be mounted on pipe rolls. Outdoor rolls shall
be galvanized.

E. Provide plastic coated clevis hangers for copper piping. All horizontal
piping 50mm dia and larger shall be supported by adjustable
galvanized wrought iron clevis type hangers.

F. Unless otherwise specified or shown, vertical pipes shall be supported at


least every 3 m. Install expansion joint between every two supports.

G. Install resilient hangers as specified under ASHRAE Article entitled


'Vibration and Noise Control.

H. For pipe sizes of 200 dia and larger, pipe supports shall be designed and
installed of structural steel in accordance with section 5100 and
reviewed by the Engineer. All structural steel in contact with the pipes
shall then be insulated as the pipe. Submit details for review.

3.4. INSPECTION

A. Inspection shall be performed in the presence of the Owner’s


representative, architect’s or Engineer’s representative, ensuring

Piping and Equipment

provisions of the Contract apply to this Section.

1.3. REFERENCE STANDARDS

A. All firefighting installations and equipment shall fully comply with UAE Fire
and life Safety Code of Practice - 2011 and the latest NFPA standards
relative to the system component or installation. The more stringent
requirement between UAE Fire and Life Safety Code and the relevant
NFPA codes will always apply.

1.4. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. The Contractor shall appoint a specialist commissioning management


company to oversee the commissioning of all systems.

B. In liaison with the Contractor, the commissioning management


company shall develop a detailed commissioning programme in
accordance with the guidelines included within NFPA 3, NFPA 25 and
manufacturers requirements.

C. The testing and commissioning process shall be detailed and


comprehensive in accordance with the requirements of all the
applicable NFPA codes, NFPA 25 and shall include but not be limited to
the following stages.

1. Factory testing of all plant

2. Visual inspection of all installations

1.5. QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Contractor’s Quality Control Responsibilities: The Contractor is solely


responsible for quality control of the Work.

B. Regulatory Requirements: Comply with applicable requirements of the


laws, codes, ordinances and regulations of the local civil defence.
Obtain necessary approvals from all such authorities.

1.6. DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. General: Deliver and store materials in manufacturer’s original


packaging labeled to show name, brand, type, and grade. Store
materials in protected dry location off ground in accordance with
manufacturer’s instructions. Do not open packaging nor remove labels
until time for installation.

1.7. PROJECT / SITE CONDITIONS

A. Weather Conditions: Do not proceed with the Work during inclement


weather nor when weather forecasts are unfavourable, unless the Work
will proceed in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements and
instructions.

1.8. WARRANTY

A. Special Warranty: Submit for Employer’s documentation. Provide written

warranty in form stipulated by Client, signed by the Contractor,


agreeing to repair or replace equipment which has failed as a result of
defects in materials or workmanship. Upon notification of such defects,
within the warranty period, make necessary repairs or replacement at
the convenience of the Client.

PART 2 | PRODUCTS

2.1. GENERAL

A. Refer to other Division 21 sections for products descriptions and


requirements

B. Provide all labour, materials, products, equipment and services to test


and commission the complete fire suppression systems as indicated on
the drawings and specified in these specifications, to provide a
complete and operational installation.

C. The Contractor shall be experienced in the design and installation of fire


protection systems to NFPA standards, and shall be an approved
company by the local Civil defence

2.2. COMMISSIONING PROGRAMME

A. The commissioning programme shall be developed to work in parallel


with the main contract programme, with phased activities included
where required.

B. The commissioning programme will make due allowance for testing of


all fire suppression system interfaces to fire alarm system, Cause and
Effect testing and Civil Defence inspections.

2.3. METHOD STATEMENT

A. An approved method statement shall be produced for all works related


to testing and commissioning of the systems

2.4. DOCUMENTATION

A. Refer to general testing and commissioning division for documentation


requirements

B. The Contractor shall also provide any further documentation required

for the demonstration and approval of the systems by the local civil
defence

PART 3 | EXECUTION

3.1. TESTING

A. The complete fire protection system should be fully inspected, tested


and commissioned in accordance with the detailed testing and
commissioning requirements for all Division 21 components as indicated
in applicable NFPA codes and in particular NFPA 25 for water based.

B. The Contractor shall provide a detailed commissioning programme and


method statements particular to all fire protection systems.

C. Inspection shall be performed in the presence of the Client’s


representative.

D. The contractor shall provide the Client demonstration of all the


components of the system

3.2. CLIENT TRAINING

A. Prior to final acceptance, the Contractor shall provide operational


training in all concepts of the system to the Client’s key personnel.

B. Full Documentation shall be provided with the training manual

1. As-built drawings shall be provided by the Contractor indicating the


installation details. All routing of piping, electrical conduit and
accessories shall be noted.

2. Equipment installation and maintenance manuals shall be provided in


addition to the as-built drawings.

3. Detailed operating guides shall be provided for all systems as part of


the training package.

1.4. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. All pipework and fittings shall be suitable for the conveyance of water
through the fire protection system, maintaining a live water supply
without degradation to the materials or leakage.

B. All materials shall be UL listed and FM approval and shall be approved


by the local Civil defence and shall comply with the requirements of
NFPA 13

C. The Contractor shall be responsible to provide all calculations and


materials required for necessary for vibration and movement control
related to the systems. This shall include all necessary devices to
manage vibration, thermal and seismic movement and anchoring
requirements for the whole installation.

1.5. QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Contractor’s Quality Control Responsibilities: The Contractor is solely

PART 2 | PRODUCTS

2.1. PIPES AND FITTINGS:

A. For working pressures below 2000 kPa

1. Where working pressure in the piping is below 2000 kPa, pipes shall be
ERW factory galvanized steel to ASTM A 53 grade B, schedule 40.

2. Fittings for piping 50mm and smaller shall be UL listed and FM approved
threaded factory galvanized cast iron fitting, class 250 to ANSI B16.4.

3. Fittings for piping larger than 50mm shall be joined using factory

galvanized mechanical roll grooved fittings and mechanical joints.


Fittings, gaskets and mechanical couplings shall be UL listed and FM
approved.

4. Galvanizing shall be on the inside and outside of pipe and fittings.

B. For Working pressures of 2000 kPa and above

1. Where working pressures in the piping is 2000 kPa and above pipes
shall be ERW factory galvanized steel to ASTM A 53 grade B, schedule
80.

2. Fittings for 50mm and smaller shall be UL listed and FM approved


threaded factory galvanized malleable iron fittings, class 300 to ANSI B
16.3.

3. Fittings for piping larger than 50mm shall be extra heavy UL listed and
FM approved flanged and weld galvanized wrought steel fittings class
300 to ANSI B 16.9.

4. Galvanizing shall be on the inside and outside of pipe and fittings.

C. Welding:

1. Shop welding and galvanizing of piping will be permitted in lieu of


screwed or flanged connections. Joining of sections of welded piping
in the field shall be by screwed, flanged or mechanical joint as
specified. Field welding will not be permitted.

2. Welding fittings shall be in compliance with ANSI standard for factory


made wrought steel butt-weld fittings ANSI No. B16.9, ANSI standard
butt-welding ends for pipe, valves, flanges and fittings ANSI No. B16.25
and ASTM Standard Specifications for piping fittings of wrought carbon
steel and alloy steel for moderate and elevated temperatures ASTM
No. A-234.

3. Tee connections in welded piping shall be made with a factory


fabricated butt-welding tee or with weld-o-let of butt, socket or
threaded type. When weld-o-lets are used, the branch connections
shall be one half the diameter of the main or less. Scarf welding or
direct butt welding of side connections shall not be permitted. Tees

fabricated from pipe shall not be permitted.

4. Long radius welding elbows shall, wherever possible, be used in


changing pipe directions of welded pipe lines. Mitered joints shall not
be accepted.

5. Welders shall be certified as being qualified for welding in compliance


with the requirements of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,
Section IX, Qualification Standard for Welding and Brazing Procedures,
Welders, Brazers, and Welding and Brazing Operators, latest Edition.

D. Underground pipework:

1. Shall be selected from the materials stated in NFPA 13 – Section 10 to


suit the particular ground conditions for the site. Unless otherwise
stated HDPE PE100 SDR11 fusion welded pressure pipe shall be utilized.
This shall be to AWWA C906-15 standard.

2. All associated components shall be installed in accordance with the


same standards as the pipework in accordance with NFPA 13 Section
10

3. Pipes shall be designed to withstand a system working pressure of not


less than 10.3 bar

4. Trenches should be formed to provide adequate depth of cover to


protect the pipe in accordance with NFPA 13 Section 10.4

5. Pipework shall be laid in accordance with the requirements of NFPA


13 Section 10.7 and 10.8 inclusive of the installation of joint restraints
and thrust blocks.

2.2. PAINTING

A. Internal fire protection piping shall not be painted it will be bare


galvanized finish.

B. All pipework shall also be provided with identification markings in


accordance with NFPA and local requirements.

C. Galvanised pipework welds will be painted with zinc rich cold


galvanising paint post welding.

2.3. HANGERS AND SUPPORTS

A. Piping hangers, supports and sway braces shall be fabricated in


accordance with NFPA-13. The hangers, rods support and supporting
devices and accessories shall be capable of supporting at least twice
the live loads of the product being supported. All hangers, supports and
accessories shall be UL listed and FM approved. Spacing intervals shall
be within manufacturers recommended guidelines.

B. Clevis hangers shall be adjustable, of yoke and lower U strap design with
cross bolt, and manufactured from galvanized steel. Cross bolt shall
have a double locking nut. Vertical adjustable supporting rod shall have
a load nut below the yoke and a locking a nut above the yoke. Vertical
inserts installed using power activated gun will not be accepted. 'C' type
beam clamps will not be accepted.

C. Concrete inserts shall be factory made galvanized malleable iron,


poured in place type, screwed or toggle style.

D. Concrete anchors shall be factory made cadmium plated malleable


iron or ally steel expansion shield type.

E. Welded steel brackets for supporting loads up to maximum of 390 kg


shall be galvanized steel and designed to accept standard hanger rods
and pipe supporting devices.

F. Riser clamps shall be galvanized steel bands shaped to tightly fit O.D. of
pipe, secured with bolts.

G. Primary support systems and anchors must be approved by the


structural engineer based on live weight calculations provided by the
contractor.

H. Seismic supports will be providing as necessary in accordance with


UBC97 and seismic zone classification which is Zone 2b.

2.4. FIRE DEPARTMENT INLET BREECHING CONNECTION (SIAMESE


CONNECTION)

A. Siamese connections (inlet breechings) shall be complete with two


65mm threaded connections to suit type of threads on hose used by

local fire department and a common 100mm outlet pipe c/w check
valve. Connections shall be complete with threaded caps, chained to
body. All parts including valve body, chain and caps shall be polished
and chrome plated bronze.

B. Wall Siamese shall be flush type with wording in and English as specified
below, cast into face plate.

C. Siamese connected to the combined automatic sprinkler/standpipe


system shall bear the wording:

1. Combined Sprinklers/Standpipe Fire Department Inlet

D. Install fire department inlet breeching connections in accordance with


Civil defence requirements,

E. NFPA and as shown on drawings. Provide one check valve for each
connection.

F. Locations of all fire department connections shall suit the agreed access
locations in accordance with the fire strategy for the project

PART 3 | EXECUTION & EXAMINATION

3.1. EXAMINATION

A. The Contractor shall ensure all products are inspected prior to


installation and shall also allow the engineer full access to the
equipment throughout duration of the works

3.2. PREPARATION

A. The Contractor shall ensure that all plant, materials and site conditions
are as required to ensure the works can be undertaken in accordance
with the design intent.

3.3. INSTALLATION

A. The installation shall be carried out and certified by a contractor


approved by the local civil defence in accordance with the
requirements of this specification

3.4. PROTECTION

A. All pipework shall be stored and protected to ensure it is clean and


undamaged prior to installation.

B. All open-ended pipes should be capped ensuring storage and


installation to avoid contamination and ingress of debris, vermin and
other items which may affect commissioning and operation.

C. The Contractor shall ensure all equipment is protected from damage


from delivery to handover, providing all necessary materials and
supervision.

3.5. TESTING

A. Make pressure tests on all fire protection piping included in the contract.
Tests shall be made after all sprinkler heads and water flow switches are
installed, but before piping is painted, covered or concealed. Furnish all
labour and equipment required for testing.

B. The Client shall be notified one week in advance of any testing so that
the tests can be witnessed.

C. Defects that develop during the tests shall be promptly remedied and
testing shall be reapplied to the satisfaction of the Client.

D. Testing shall be in accordance with the requirements of NFPA and in


particular NFPA 25.

E. Underground pipework shall be tested in accordance with the


requirements of NFPA 13 Section 10.10

3.6. COMMISSIONING

A. Refer to specification section 210800 Commissioning of Fire Suppression


Systems

B. Refer to section 3.5 above

3.7. CLEANING

A. Contractor shall flush the fire protection system with clean water as
necessary to remove builder’s debris, dirt and corrosion before
commissioning system. Fire Protection system pipework will be
demonstrated to Consultant and Client as being clean internally before

system is commissioned.

3.8. CLIENT TRAINING

1.4. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. As part of the overall fire protection system, the Contractor is responsible


to provide a comprehensive and integrated standpipe installation to
serve the project, occupants and contents in accordance with all
Section 21 specification requirements and in accordance with NFPA
and local requirements.

B. The scope of work shall include, but not be limited to the following:

1. Supply and install all piping, landing valves, etc. to make a complete
installation

2. This section covers the minimum requirements for the installation of


standpipes, and valves including methods and procedures of water
flow testing for the evaluation of water supplies

3. The purpose of the system is to provide a reasonable degree of


protection for life and property from fire through installation
requirements for standpipes and hydrants.

1.5. QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Contractor’s Quality Control Responsibilities: The Contractor is solely


responsible for quality control of the Work.

B. Regulatory Requirements: Comply with applicable requirements of the


laws, codes, ordinances and regulations of the local civil defence.
Obtain necessary approvals from all such authorities.

1.6. DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. General: Deliver and store materials in manufacturer’s original


packaging labeled to show name, brand, type, and grade. Store
materials in protected dry location off ground in accordance with

manufacturer’s instructions. Do not open packaging nor remove labels


until time for installation.

1.7. PROJECT / SITE CONDITIONS

A. Weather Conditions: Do not proceed with the Work during inclement


weather nor when weather forecasts are unfavourable, unless the Work
will proceed in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements and
instructions.

1.8. WARRANTY

A. Special Warranty: Submit for Client’s documentation. Provide written


warranty in form stipulated by Client, signed by the Contractor,
agreeing to repair or replace equipment which has failed as a result

B. of defects in materials or workmanship. Upon notification of such


defects, within the warranty period, make necessary repairs or
replacement at the convenience of the Client.

PART 2 | PRODUCTS

2.1. SYSTEM REQUIRMENTS

A. All devices and materials used in standpipe systems shall be of an


approved type. System components shall be rated for working pressures
not less than the maximum pressure to be developed at their
corresponding locations within the system under any condition,

including the pressure that occurs when a permanently installed fire


pump is operating at shutoff

B. The class of the system shall be as detailed in the scope of works and
shall be in accordance with the fire strategy for the project.

C. The type of standpipe system (Dry, etc.) shall be as detailed on the


schematic drawings here required by the local civil defence, listed
water flow alarms shall be provided.

D. Connections to each water supply (other than fire department


connections) shall be provided with an approved indicating-type valve
and check valve located close to the supply, such as at tanks, pumps,
and connections from waterworks systems.

2.2. PIPEWORK AND FITTINGS

A. Pipe used in standpipe systems shall meet or exceed one of the


standards in NFPA 14 – Table 2-2.1 or shall be in accordance with 2-2.2
through 2-2.6. ERW factory galvanized steel to ASTM A 53 grade B,
schedule 40.

B. Pipework shall also be in accordance with requirements of specification


section21100 galvanised internally and externally.

C. All valves controlling connections to water supplies and standpipes shall


be listed indicating valves.

D. These valves shall not close in less than 5 seconds when operated at
maximum possible speed from the fully open position unless stipulated
otherwise.

2.3. PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

A. Fire extinguishers shall comply with NFPA-10 for listing and labeling.

B. Fire extinguishers shall be as follows:

1. Carbon dioxide: 5 kg

2. Dry Chemical / Multipurpose: 5 kg type ABC

C. Each fire extinguisher cabinet shall be equipped with a 5 kg ABC fire


extinguisher and 5 kg CO2 fire extinguisher.

D. to RAL 3001, the door shall incorporate a wired glass inspection window.

2.4. FIRE DEPARTMENT INLET BREECHING CONNECTION (SIAMESE


CONNECTION)

A. Siamese connections (inlet breechings) shall be by an acceptable


manufacturer. The unit shall be complete with two 65mm threaded
connections to suit type of threads on hose used by local fire
department and a common 100mm outlet pipe c/w check valve.
Connections shall be complete with threaded caps, chained to body.
All parts including valve body, chain and caps shall be polished and
chrome plated bronze.

B. Wall Siamese shall be flush type with wording in Arabic and English as
specified below, cast into face plate.

C. Siamese connected to the combined automatic sprinkler/standpipe


system shall bear the wording:

D. Install fire department inlet breeching connections in accordance with


Civil Defence requirements, NFPA and as shown on drawings. Provide
one check valve for each connection.

2.5. STANDPIPES / LANDING VALVES

A. All landing valves shall be by an acceptable manufacturer, being


approved by local civil defence, having FM and UL listing

B. Locations and shall be as indicated on the drawings. Setting out and


arrangements shall be in accordance with NFPA requirements and
should not obstruct stairways or passages.

2.6. IDENTIFICATIONS SIGNS

A. Properly lettered polished brass or bronze metal signs conforming to


NFPA shall be attached to each alarm check valve.

B. Fire Hose cabinets shall be provided with indication signage. Local Civil

defence requirements shall be adhered to.

C. Fire extinguisher cabinets directly exposed to weather shall be


constructed with stainless steel body and doors with the same provisions
as above.

D. Identification and operation instructions shall be clearly marked on the


cabinet in accordance with approved wording, fonts and text sizes
required by the Ministry of Emergency Situation (MOES).

PART 3 | EXECUTION

3.1. EXAMINATION

A. The Contractor shall ensure all products are inspected prior to


installation and shall also allow the engineer full access to the
equipment throughout duration of the works

3.2. PREPARATION

A. The Contractor shall ensure that all plant, materials and site conditions
are as required to ensure the works can be undertaken in accordance
with the design intent.

3.3. INSTALLATION

A. Mount fire extinguisher cabinets securely in concrete block walls at the


core areas by shimmying the tub and mortaring tightly in place. Surface
mount cabinets shall be provided on walls in general parking areas.
Provide steel support frame suitable for outdoor use for free standing
cabinets located on the roof. Stand shall be of steel construction with 2
coats of primer paint and 2 coats of exterior enamel, red in colour.
Mounting hardware and attachment shall be stainless steel.

B. In all hose outlets, UL listed adjustable pressure reducing valves shall be


provided to reduce the flowing pressure to approximately 500 kPa.

C. Provide dry powder and CO2 fire extinguishers in each extinguisher


cabinet. The pressure test on the extinguisher shall remain valid for 5
years.

D. At the top of each standpipe risers, provide a pressure gauge complete

with a valve, in the fire hose cabinet.

E. Distribute fire extinguishers shown on drawings and as prescribed in the


NFPA 10 standard and in accordance with local Civil defence.

F. All small electrical rooms and telephone rooms shall be provided by 5


kg CO2 extinguisher

3.4. PROTECTION

A. The Contractor shall ensure all equipment is protected from damage


from delivery to handover, providing all necessary materials and
supervision.

3.5. TESTING

A. Refer to detailed testing and commissioning requirements for all Division


21 components

B. The complete fire protection system should be fully tested and


commissioned in accordance with NFPA recommendations and in
particular NFPA 25 for water-based systems

C. The Contractor shall provide a detailed commissioning programme and


method statements particular to all fire protection systems.

D. Inspection shall be performed in the presence of the Client’s


representative.

3.6. DEMONSTRATION

A. The Contractor shall provide the Client demonstration of all the


components of the system

3.7. CLIENT TRAINING

A. Prior to final acceptance, the Contractor shall provide operational


training in all concepts of the system to the Client’s key personnel.

B. Full Documentation shall be provided with the training manual

1. As-built drawings shall be provided by the Contractor indicating the


installation details. All routing of piping, electrical conduit and
accessories shall be noted.

2.1. PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

E. Unless otherwise stated, fire extinguishers shall be as follows:

1. Carbon dioxide: 5 kg

2. Dry Chemical / Multipurpose: 5 kg type ABC

F. Unless otherwise stated, each fire hose cabinet shall be equipped with
a 5 kg ABC fire extinguisher and 5 kg CO2 fire extinguisher.

G. Fire Extinguishers should be correctly mounted in accordance with


manufacturer’s requirements and must be marked with a valid test
date. These should be retested if the date has expired.

2.2. FIRE BLANKETS

A. Fire blankets shall be provided in all kitchens and pantries together with
any other locations required by civil defence over and above locations
shown on the drawings. These shall be approved by the local civil
defence and should be mounted in accordance with manufacturers
requirements.

2.3. WET AND DRY CHEMICAL EXTINGUISHING SYSTEMS

A. Other Wet and Dry Chemical Extinguishing systems shall be fully


designed, manufactured and installed in accordance with the
requirements of NFPA 16, 17 and 17A

2.4. CARBON DIOXIDE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEMS

A. All Carbon Dioxide Extinguishing systems shall be fully designed,

manufactured and installed in accordance with the requirements of


NFPA 12

PART 3 | EXECUTION

3.3. INSTALLATION

A. Provide fire extinguishers of type, size, and capacity for each cabinet
and other locations indicated.

B. Mounting brackets must be manufacturer’s standard steel bracket,


designed to secure extinguisher, of sizes required for types and
capacities of fire extinguisher indicated, with plated or baked-enamel
finish.

C. Fire extinguishers installed outside shall be located in approved weather-


tight fire extinguisher cabinets.

D. Cabinets shall be constructed from Steel Sheet:

E. Unless specified otherwise on construction drawings, provide fire


extinguisher cabinet of type, size, and rating approved by the local civil
defence.

F. Provide manufacturer’s standard enclosure, with trim, frame, door, and


hardware to suit cabinet type, trim style, and door style indicated. Weld
joints and grind smooth. Miter and weld perimeter door frames.

G. Fire-Rated Cabinets: Listed and labeled to meet requirements of ASTM


E814 for fire-resistance rating of wall where it is installed. Construct fire-
rated cabinets with double walls fabricated from 0.0478- inch (1.2-mm)

thick, cold-rolled steel sheet lined with minimum 5/8-inch (16-mm) thick,
fire-barrier material. Provide factory drilled mounting holes.

H. Cabinet Mounting should be suitable for the following:

1. Recessed: Cabinet box recessed in walls of sufficient depth to suit style


of trim indicated.

2. Semi recessed: Cabinet box partially recessed in walls of shallow depth


to suit style of trim indicated.

3. Surface Mounted: Cabinet box fully exposed and mounted directly on


wall.

I. Install extinguishers as indicated below.

1. Install fire extinguishers mounted on hangers or brackets attached to


a wall so that the top of the fire extinguisher is not more than 3½ ft.
above the floor.

2. In no case shall the clearance between the bottom of the fire


extinguisher and the floor be less than 4 inches.

3. Install fire extinguishers at locations specified on the drawings or as


directed by the authority having jurisdiction.

4. Fire extinguishers shall be conspicuously located, along normal paths


of travel, including exits from areas. Extinguishers shall not be
obstructed or obscured from view.

5. Install portable fire extinguishers on the hanger or in the bracket


supplied, or place in the fire extinguisher cabinets provided. Verify that
the extinguisher operating instructions face outward.

J. Identify bracket-mounted extinguishers with the words “FIRE


EXTINGUISHER” in red letter decals applied to wall surface.

K. Identify fire extinguisher in cabinet with the words “FIRE EXTINGUISHER”


applied to door.
