CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Our manner of life and how we connect with one another have changed as a result of
the COVID19 pandemic. It actually instilled dread around the world and forced many
doors, businesses, and jobs to close. By doing so, it even transported us into the social
media realm. We can only communicate online with our friends and romantic partners; we
are unable to see them in person. Even our classes are changing from in-person instruction
to online, modular instruction. As a result, we spend more time online and on our phones.
(ICTs). Without aquestion, modern communication technology has transformed the entire
world into a "Global village." However, technology, like two sides of a coin, has both
positive and harmful aspects. It assists people in becoming more aware, enlightened, and

Phone, and Androids are examples of social networking sites. Most people utilize these
media sites to engage with old and new acquaintances, physical or virtual. The rapid
evolution of technology has altered the world, and this has resulted in the use of
technology as the ideal medium to explore the vast range of knowledge. It is utilized not
only to generate, gather, and share information, but it is also a platform for giving or
providing leisure and enjoyment. Different social media applications provide a wide range
of entertainment and leisure-based options, such as Facebook, where they offer different
types of games that vary depending on what the user wants, and YouTube, where you can
watch a wide range of videos. Since social media applications are undeniably entertaining,
they also have their own drawbacks, such as the said social media sites, which are very
addicting to the users, particularly the youth. According to (Kaplan and Haenlein, 2010),

of these social media networks, students' academic lives have taken on a new dimension,
both positively and badly. In their study, Kuppuswamy and Shankar (2010) stated that

communicate, speak, and even exchange information with our family and friends. It may
also have an impact on students' academic achievement. This site enables users to spend as
much time as they want on their preferred websites, which can have unintended
consequences such as incomplete schoolwork and other obligations. Social media attracts

that social media has diverted from visible to invisible friends are one of its challenges.
The process may have an impact on crucial academic tasks like writing and studying. Both

academic achievement is being neglected and challenged severely. Social networking and
their academic work require divergence, diversion, and divided concentration. Students
are seen paying more attention to social media than to their coursework. Therefore, it is

services, and practices that support collaboration, community building, participation, and
sharing”. The growing dimension of the use of social media among the youth of today
cannot be over emphasized. Over the years, social networking among second cycle
students has become more and more popular. It is a way to make connection not only on
campus, but with friends outside of school. Social networking is a way that helps many
people feels as though they belong to a community. Due to the increased popularity of it,
economists and professors are questioning whether grades of students are not being

affected by how much time is spend on these sites (Choney, 2010). Though social media
can increase student learning through student interactions, challenges arise when social
media are incorporated into an academic course. The assumption that students are familiar
with and agreeable to using certain types of social media can cause educators to
usage and learning (Cole, 2009; Väljataga & Fiedler, 2009). Arnold and Paulus (2010)
found that even when social media is used for an educational purpose, students
incorporate the technology into their lives in a way that may differ from the intentions of
For example, off-topic or non- academic discussions occur on social media because of its
primary design as a social networking tool (Lin et al., 2013). Further, as a student’s age
increases, the frequency of off-topic discussions also increases (Lin et al., 2013). This
indicates that while social media may encourage broader discussions of course content,
older student’s may spend more time than younger students engaging in unrelated
discussions.
Social media can also negatively affect student GPA as well as the amount of time
students spend preparing for class (Annetta et al., 2009; Junco, 2012b). One explanation
for this impact is that social media provides too much stimulation and therefore can
distract students from completing their coursework (Hurt et al., 2012; Patera et al., 2008).

Another reason for this may be that students who spend more time on social media

The term social media is defined as the application that allows users to converse and
interact with each other; to create, edit and share new forms of textual, visual and audio
content, and to categorize, label and recommend existing forms of content (Selwyn 2012).
As regards the intentions of social media usage, Oye, Adam, and Zairah, (2012) in their
study with Malaysian students using social networking site and its influence on their
academic performance showed that social networking sites usage for only social and non-
academic needs have an adverse effect on academic performance. Social media can also

personal messages, and other content about each other and their lives using a multimedia
mix of personal words, pictures, videos and audio, utilizing online platforms while they
are connected to the internet (Mingle & Adams, 2015). Concept of social media means
that employs mobile and web-based technology to create highly interactive platforms via
which individuals and community share, co-create, discuss and modifies user-generated
content (Kietzmannn, 2012). Social media is a phrase being tossed around a lot. It is a

Adding to it, they spend a lot of their time on these sites as a part of their daily lives.
Students can also exchange information by connecting with different individuals. This can
have a positive impact on student learning outcomes (Yu et al., 2010). Social media also
has an influence on student mental health; which refers to their emotional, psychological,
and social well-being. Schools and University students spend a lot of their time on social
media both during the day and at night, and it can be contended that such technologies
play an important role in their daily lives. However, despite their tremendous
technologies are being used to gain knowledge or for other purposes that may lead to the

positive ones (Woods and Scott, 2016). Since students tend to spend more time on social

media other than educational purposes; this tends to cause distraction from the learning
environment, affecting their academic progress (Bekalu et al., 2019, Hettiarachchi, 2014).
Further, spending a lot of time on social media can lead to sedentary lifestyle and a
decrease in daily physical activity levels, which in turn can render them vulnerable to
2015, Zou et al., 2019, Hu et al., 2001). Additionally, social media use has negative effects
on mental health and can lead to depression and anxiety. In a study by Pempek,
Yermolayeva, and Calvert (2009), the amount of time spent daily on social network sites
varied greatly. However, an analysis of the data indicated most participants spent

than 50% of students go on a social networking site several times a day (Sheldon, 2008).
Quad-Haase and Young (2010), found that 82% of students reported logging into
Facebook several times a day. Younger students tended to use Facebook more frequently
than older students to keep in touch with friends from school or from their hometown

fantastic because of the availability of quick updates. Social media use in the classroom
has been considered by many teachers to be a quick and efficient way for their students to
learn more about current events. It can be a good technique to gain knowledge as long as
you put some restrictions and make it clear to your pupils what it can and cannot be used
for in the classroom. Dany (2017), enumerated three major educational benefits of social
media, one of it is that using social media, teachers can able to improve the involvement of
ability, provide a great sense of collaboration in the classroom and make good
communication skills. Today's students increasingly rely on the web's general accessibility
as well as the material that is available on social media platforms specially to find the
answers they need. This indicates that there is less of an emphasis on both learning and
information retention. Students are also making an effort to multitask. While studying,
they try to check a variety of social media platforms. Academic performance suffers as a
result. Additionally, because of the distraction that all of these social networking sites
bring, their capacity to focus on the task at hand is considerably diminished; Armstrong

Facebook and Twitter are used to great benefit —sometimes. Students welcome online
engagement and resources; around 75% of student respondents said they'd like to do some
online collaboration for class, in fact. Also, social media may have a positive impact on
students' sense of themselves in the community. Social media-using students were twice as
likely as other students to feel well-liked by their peers and to participate in extracurricular
activities. However, other studies like Ahmed and Qazi (2011), Hanqittai and Hsich

Recently, there has arisen a debate on the adverse impact of social media usage on people,
In this respect, digital media and social media networking sites have received
criticism, and there are many perspectives regarding the effect of social media in the
context of Pakistani students. The popularity of social media applications and social
networking sites has increased precipitously during the last decade (Malita, 2011).
Typically, the reason for this rapid increase is that teenagers and college and university
students are using social media applications to gain global access. These social media
sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, are becoming the craze in our society for everyone
Today, students are relying increasingly on information and data that is easily
accessible on social networking sites and the internet. This is the reason why students’
learning skills and research capabilities are decreasing in certain situations, as their
engagement with these sites reduces their focus, which causes them to dedicate less time
to their studies and results in a decline in their poor academic performance manifesting in
the form of low grades, failure in assignment and class test, etc. (Hoffmann & Bublitz,
2017).
Typically, as students spend more time on social media, they spend less time
socializing face to face or in person with other people, and these habits reduce their
communication skills. The wasting of students’ time on social media may also cause them
to miss deadlines on occasion. As a result, students might not be able to communicate and
socialize effectively in person, and it is well known that strong communication skills are a
key to success. Moreover, excessive social media use affects students’ mental and physical
health. The adverse effects of these social media networking sites outweigh the positive
ones. Thus, these sites have caused potential harm to society. Students become victims of
social networks more often than anyone else. This may be because social media is an
attractive way for students to avoid boredom while they are studying or searching their
course material online, diverting their attention from their work (Bozoglan, 2017).
Implications for Counseling can play a major role in curtailing the negative influence of
social media networks on Students’ academic performance. Makinde (2007) (as cited in
Northeastern Mindanao Colleges

Shaterloo & Ghasem, 2011) defined guidance and counseling as an interaction process co-

Some of them may use it as their sidekick or as a tool to improve their knowledge and
skills. They might also use it in the school for important purposes like, researching topics
and words or discussion that may have been hard for them to understand.
But it is irrefutable that some of them use social media for nonsense activities, like
playing games, surfing into links that provides nothing but sexuality. It's sad, but it is the
reality. And because of doing unnecessary things on social media, it made their academic
performance lower and they wouldn't gain knowledge in school. So all of the Grade 7
students must be educated about the pros and cons of social media.
