Understanding Quantitative Research

The document provides information on quantitative research methods including: 1. It lists several key advantages of quantitative research such as producing more reliable and objective findings that can be generalized, using statistics to study relationships between variables, and establishing cause and effect relationships. 2. It contrasts quantitative and qualitative research by noting that quantitative research focuses on numbers, facts, and impartial analysis while qualitative research uses interpretive and naturalistic approaches. 3. It defines several types of variables commonly used in quantitative research including independent and dependent variables as well as different types like categorical, nominal, ordinal, numeric, continuous, and discrete variables.

Evaluation

• Give the importance of quantitative research

1. More reliable and objective

2. Can use statistics to generalized a finding
3. Often reduces and restructures complex problem to a limited number of variables
4. Looks at relationships between variables and can establish cause and effect in highly controlled
circumstances
5. Test theories or hypotheses
6. Subjectivity of researcher in methodology is recognized less
7. Less detailed than qualitative data and may miss a desired response from the participants
 What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative research?
 Quantitative research involves numbers, reasoning, and an impartial viewpoint, quantitative research is
focused on numerical and unchangeable facts as well as detailed, convergent reasoning rather than
divergent thinking. While qualitative research is multimethod in emphasis and involves an interpretive,
naturalistic approach to its subject matter.
 What are the different types of variables?
1. Independent variable
2. Dependent variable
3. Categorical variables
4. Nominal variables
5. Ordinal variables
6. Numeric variables
7. Continuous variables
8. Discrete variables
