CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Apple cider vinegar has a long history as a home remedy, used to treat

everything from a sore throat to varicose veins. But there’s not much science to

support the claims. Still, in recent years, some researchers have been taking a

closer look at apple cider vinegar and its possible benefits.

What’s in the apple cider vinegar? It’s mostly apple juice, but adding yeast

turns the fruit sugar into alcohol  this is called fermentation. Bacteria turn the alcohol

into acetic acid. That’s what gives vinegar its sour taste and strong smell. The overall

chemical reaction facilitated by these bacteria is: C2H5OH + O2 → CH3COOH + H2O.

Vinegar has been used as a remedy since the days of Hippocrates. The

ancient Greek doctor treated wounds with it. In recent years, people have explored

apple cider vinegar as a way to lose weight, improve heart health, and even treat

dandruff.

Study shows that Acetic acid could help strengthen hair and improve luster

by lowering hair and scalp pH. It may also keep pesky scalp infections and itchiness

at bay. However, it shouldn't be relied on to reduce inflammation or solve diseases or

issues of the scalp, like dandruff.

2
B. Statement of the Problem

This study will determine the effect of acetic acid (Apple cider vinegar)

to the texture(porosity) of hair by understanding the hair cuticle, hair acid

mantle and hair pH level, and how it helps maintain a shiny and healthy-

looking hair.

C. Significance of the Study

The use of excessive hair care styling products can take a heavy toll on

your hair. This study will present the importance of hair care products to the

following groups:

Community

Heavy use of hairsprays, gels and creams can cause your hair to

become stiff, flaky and greasy. Understanding hair will also help choosing the

right hair care products, whether from the store shelf or DIY from stuff in the

kitchen.

Human Health

To maintain shiny and healthy-looking hair by maintaining the balance

of hair acid mantle instead of damaging the hair cuticles using harsh hair care

products.

Researchers

This study helps convey the importance of hair care products and its

great benefit for naturals who often struggle to lock in moisture, thus avoiding

harmful ingredients that damage the hair.

3
D. Scope and limitations

The study is only focusing on the efficacy of the Acetic Acid made from

Apple Cider Vinegar. It will not involve other commercial products. The

researcher will only focus on the effect of the product to the hair. It will not

include the possible effects to the human health.

E. Definition of terms

Acetic Acid Apple Cider Vinegar – is an acidic, colorless liquid and organic

compound with the chemical formula CH₃COOH.

Dilute the apple cider vinegar with the ratio of 60:40 - the finish product of

the researcher’s study.

Porosity of Hair – the texture of the hair.

F. Review of related literature

Buildup left behind by styling products or shampoo can clog the follicles,

leading to scalp conditions such as dandruff, and – in extreme cases – may also

cause hair loss. The only real benefit we are aware of is that ACV can be a good

clarifying hair rinse as it helps to remove all traces of product buildup on our scalp.

(Cobb, 2017)

Hair has an ideal pH level of between 4 and 5, but many commercial

shampoos may disrupt this. While there is no evidence to back this up, a 2014 study

Trusted Source looking at the pH of shampoos on the market found that the high

alkalinity of many brands contributes to hair friction, breakage, and dryness. And

because ACV has a high acidity, it follows that it could help maintain the pH balance,

thus making hair smoother, stronger, and shinier. (Barrell, 2017)

4
It has been suggested that natural acidity of Apple Cider Vinegar’s (ACV)

helps to smooth down the cuticle of a person’s hair. This, it is claimed, encourages

knots and tangles to slip out and reduces the frizz associated with lifted cuticles. It

also means hair may be better able to reflect light, giving it a more glossy, healthy

glow. (Seymour et al., 2017)

Sagen (2019) Stated in The Hair Fuel Journal that the hair acid mantle is

instrumental in making cuticle scales lie flat, which gives hair a shiny, smooth

appearance, and protects from moisture loss. Alkaline products disturb and even

destroy the acid mantle, leading hair cuticles to “stand up” like bottle brush. Such

vulnerable hair structure makes the hair fragile due to moisture loss, increasing its

brittleness and loss of shine. To maintain shiny and healthy-looking hair you need to

avoid harsh shampoos in order to maintain the balance of your acid mantle. This is

where apple cider vinegar comes in. Mildly acidic, it balances out the alkalinity from

harsh shampoos and hard water commonly flowing from taps of urban environments

cities – making sure that the cuticles of your hair lie flat and retain moisture well.

Ebena, Inc. (2017) stated that when our hair absorbs water, it swells and

expands, creating space between the cuticle layers. The expanding and contracting

of these layers can also be affected by a change in pH level, often influenced by our

choice in hair products. Products with high pH levels will help facilitate cuticle

expansion. In other words, they will help them open up. When cuticles open, they

allow for water and other nutrients from your hair products to reach the shaft.

Products with low pH levels will help the cuticle to contract and close. When the

cuticles tighten, they trap in all that moisture and vitamins that our strands need to

thrive. This is where Apple Cider Vinegar comes in. ACV has a low pH level, which

5
means it will close those hair cuticles tight, and seal in all that moisture into your hair.

This is a great benefit for naturals who often struggle to lock moisture into their curls.

The table shows the result of the experiment, from Sample 1 hair showed that

the hair sank with an average of 8.1 cm from the top to the bottom of the container.

This result showed that the hair is high in porosity. Sample 2 sank 6.2 cm from the

top of the container to the bottom this showed that the hair has a normal porosity and

Sample 3 showed an average of 3.5 cm bottom of the container this exhibit low in

porosity.

CHAPTER V

Discussion

Aloe Vera is a safe and guaranteed ingredients to remove burn and burn marks

without damaging the skin. Aloe Vera is known for its gel that reduce swelling and is

known for soothing many types of skin problems. By making a gel from its leaf, you

now have a free or cheap, eco-friendly and effective gel for treating burn.

This study focuses in the effectiveness of Aloe Vera in treating burn and

removing burn marks and also compare to other burn treating cream or product. This

study will benefit the skin, community, household, and to other researchers.

Since the product is proven to be effective by testing it in one try only. The

ingredient performed their role in treating burn and removing burn marks, as well as

to be a natural and toxic-free burn remedy that cannot harm humans or skins.

Conclusion

Based on the experiment, the result making Aloe Vera gel are proven to be

effective. I, the researcher, therefore concluded that the product is an effective for

treating burns and burn marks remover. As shown in the results, the product can

make the skin back to as it was before with no mark of burn. The product is also

natural with no chemicals that could harm the people who is using it.

Recommendation

With the results obtained, I, the researcher, recommend to develop the study and do

further research. I, the researcher, recommend to not blend the gel for too long,

refrigerate it and make sure you have no allergy to Aloe Vera to make the product

even more effective and harmless.
