WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE
GALLEON TRADE?
• The last galleon arrived in Manila in 1815, and
by the mid-1830s the city was open to foreign
merchants almost without restriction.
Consequently, the demand for Philippine sugar
and abaca or hemp grew rapidly. Exports to
Europe increased after the completion of the
Suez Canal in 1869.

CONCLUSION

Even if the Philippines was still under the Spanish

colonization during the 19th century, it cannot be denied
that there have been significant changes that took place
during the said period that later on led to an intense
clamor for freedom and independence. The natives
became more enlightened about their condition through
the help of those Filipinos who were able to obtain
education from the west.
CONCLUSION

• It can also be observed that the vital changes taking

place in the international arena can have direct
effect on the country, politically, economically, and
socially.
