A. Focus/Motivation 5 min
a. Bring students to the carpet for a read aloud
B. Body
PART 1: 15 min
a. Invite students to stay at the carpet to review how to summarize
b. Complete the pictorial input chart with students with how to use a tree map to
organize and summarize using SWBST
i. review what a summary is
ii. review the parts needing to be identified (somebody, wanted, but, so
then)
iii. ask students to TPS throughout the mini lesson
c. Ask students to return to their desks to develop their summary of the story we
read as a read aloud
i. students may work with a partner to develop their summaries
ii. remind students to read their summaries out loud to check for mistakes
PART 2: 20 min
A. Have students log on to Flipgrid to watch the introduction videos posted by the teachers
B. Allow students the opportunity to respond to either teacher using a comment or video
response
C. Reveal to students that they will be getting “virtual buddies” from another school in the
district
a. Provide them with the information - their little buddies will be reading the same
book with their teacher in their classroom, where they will work on discovering
character traits on the main character
b. Tell students that they will create a video of their own where they introduce
themselves and share the summary that they have created
D. Close 5
a. Have students complete the lesson by submitting their video
b. Ask students to tell someone next to them 2 things they learned with the lesson
