Learning Content 4: ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF FRACTIONS

LESSON TARGET/S

1. Adds and subtracts fractions and mixed fractions without and with regrouping.
2. Solves routine and non-routine problems involving addition and/or subtraction of fractions
using appropriate problem solving strategies and tools.

DRILL

I. Write each fraction to lowest terms:

27 50
=−¿ =−¿
36 100
25 10
=−¿ =−¿
75 16

II. Convert the following mixed fractions into improper fractions:

2 5 2
2 =−¿ 1 =−¿ 9 =−¿
9 7 5

III. Convert the following improper fractions into mixed fractions:

7 8 27
=¿ =¿ =¿
6 3 5

LESSON PROPER

ADDING AND SUBTRACTING SIMILAR FRACTIONS

Similar fractions are fractions with the same denominator.
To add or subtract similar fractions, do the following steps:
1. Add or subtract the whole numbers.
2. For the fractional part, add or subtract the numerators, and copy the common
denominator.
3. Reduce the answer to the lowest terms.

ADDING AND SUBTRACTING DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS

Dissimilar fractions are fractions that do not have the same denominator.
To add or subtract dissimilar fractions, do the following steps:
1. Add or subtract the whole numbers.
2. For fractional part, find the least common denominator (LCD).
3. Express the fractions into similar fractions whose denominator is equal to the LCD.
4. Add or subtract the fractions as you would add or subtract similar fractions.
5. Simplify the sum.
If the sum or difference is not in the lowest terms, reduce it to the lowest terms.
If the sum difference is an improper fraction, change it to a mixed number.

To fully understand how these steps are applied, watch the video clip from the link
below. Study also the lesson in your textbook “Phoenix Math for the 21 st Century Learners” on
pages 93-96.

spend in the garden?
Processing Questions:
1. What is asked?
2. What are the given?
3. What operation will be used?
4. What is the number sentence?
5. Solution and answer.
Problem 2:
Ana bought 1½ kg of grapes for her younger sister. They ate ¼ kg of it. How many
kilograms of grapes were left?
Processing Questions:
1. What is asked?
2. What are the given?
3. What operation will be used?
4. What is the number sentence?
5. Solution and answer.
