The Orang Asli of Malaysí a o
Inhabitants of the oldest jungle in the world, F
§E 1ir.§ ..gij-s
rí tí fi:r.-i"-es_ For centuries, the jungle has belonged to the aborigines of Malaysia - the Orang Asli -
tFrq5 !11;11 meaning the original people. They have long established their home in an environment
:,-$JH$ F :o where profusion and hostility go together. Their habitat and way of life are far from the
qE- itce B:r civilization in the rest of the country.
iEIü§ t j=3r
üu!§E:sins The Orang Asli are the oldest people in the Malaysian peninsula. In 2000, there were
fu§J.ih about 93,000; less than one per cent of the total population in the country.
4prrs a:d They are not a homogenous people. There are three main groups: the Negrito, the Senoi
T}:ET\ and the Melayu Asli (also called proto-Malays).

The Negritos have a'darker skin and are smaller than the two other groups. They look
raüer like Australian Bushmen or Negritos from the Philippines. They are the oldest
people among the Orang Asli and the most nomadic tribe. They represent one-tenth of
the aboriginal population and live mainly in the north of the country.

The Senoi are taller and thinner than the Negrito. They have a lighter skin colour and
üeir physiological characteristics are different as their forehead is flatter. They are
settled in the middle of the peninsula.

The proto-Malays are physically close to the common Malays, without being their
ancestors. The biggest community among the three Orang Asli groups, their face is
generally oval and their skin is paler than the Senoi. They are mainly found in the south
of the peninsula.
